300megs for 56k'ers is only for the die-hard fans out there, and only the really really REALLY hardcore trickjump fans are going to spend 48 hours on downloading a trickjump movie.....however....I'm dl'ing it for sure, on mah l33t 256k ADSL kthx, as MF's jumps have never disappointed me

almost all tricks are available in the demos, the problem is demos come along with the video.
they take like 6 megs total, many of them arent wholy or at all in the video so it's kewl.
no 56ker will be disappointed or whatever, just wait till MF wakes up and releases them separately.
i can spread my own demos but i dont know if MF isnt going to add something to the pack or whatever so lets just wait for the pack.
it wont take a few days to ppl to understand the tricks and better them tenfold in that time :)
also giving out our demos is a kewl feature of that production isnt it? :p

cached.net is screwed, I can't get an account there. I try to register as a new user and it always tells me the login name I choose has already been taken. I tried 20 different login names, eventually even did 15 random characters and their website still says it wasn't a unique login. WTF.

Do not, I repeat do not download the 256MB version unless you want an inferior download. Own-age recompressed that vid without my knowledge. The sound data was doubled by his recompression so you are downloading a ton of extra megs for no extra improvement in sound. His vid also has a 300kbps drop in video quality. Worst of all, the sound isn't synchronized right in his release. I'm working on an upload right now that will be a small download and will have none of the errors present in his vid. Just a warning. There is no big deal in waiting a few more ours for a better download. His version of the vid is quite good and anyone who has seen it will agree to that but there will be a much better low-quality release in a few hours.

I thought the video quality was fine, I was dissapointed in the sound tho. The vid ownz so I'm downloading the 600Mb one now:

Your content was great, but i'm sorry, you should really learn some simple things about encoding video and sound..

First, you have 20mins video here, 595MB is just way to much.
Lower the resolution to, say 576x432, and ofcourse use variabel bitrate, it seems like you did that actually ;)
Then the framerate, 30fps, wtf?
Dunno if you ever watch divx movies, but from ntsc source they're 23.97 fps, and 25fps from pal. Lower the framerate to 23.97 and voila, 25% gain in size.
Second, use MP3 for the audio, it's simple. If you don't know how to mux video and audio, use virtualdub. With 128kbs 44khz mp3, you would get a soundfile that's smaller, but still superior to the sound you've used.

I could've written more about this, but you should check out some guides on www.doom9.org or something instead. :)

This is NOT meant as a flamebait, I really enjoyed the avi, but i just feel ppl should learn some basic things about encoding before they upload a 500MB file to some site.
If you don't wanna read guides and docs, just ask someone who has the knowledge, I'm sure they'll help you when the content is good like this :)

We (b3nt, Gaz, and I) were actually shooting for a target framerate of 40fps. Going down to 30 was a compromise. I chose the sound quality based on that chosen for Promo4. I didn't hear anyone complain about the sound quality back then so I thought if it isn't broken don't fix it. I won't budge on the resolution thing, I was able to squeeze more quality into this 640 by 480 vid than vids with lower resolutions and higher bitrates. I'll take your advice about the sound encoding, though. The file is huge because of the 504kbps video bitrate. This was used to preserve all textures - something that can't be done with anything less. There is a download provided to you at half the file size if you don't care for perfect quality.

Yeah the audio should have been mp3, pcm is like 10mb a min so for a 20min film thats like 200mb! 128k mp3 is fine for q3 movies(20mb) you could use 192k mp3 if u want pretty good sound
You cant mp3 in premier so export the video and audio out of there and do the compressing in virtual dub

The tricks were very good but the music didn't seem to flow with the tricks. The music tranistion wasn't that good. And I thought including those bounce bugs tricks was a turn off. But still overall a good video.

ok.. reason being for the recompressed vid (the 256 meg vid)
simply being 600 megs reguardless of your connection is a nightmare to upload/download. Michael, you should of held off and released both the 300 meg and the 600 meg one. it takes me 5 hours to upload the 600 meg one. and my webserver will not allow this many people to download which is why i created the 256 meg one. I mean the 600 one is awsome But its just too big to work when you look at it from a webmaster's perspective. please tell me when the 300 is out asap so all this can be over

2 more hours and the low-quality one will be ready for upload. You have to tell me when a 600MB file is too large for you to work with. You also need to tell me if you are going to compress it any further before release. I'm a trustworthy guy, if you want to send me the information on how to upload the file directly to your server I will begin the upload as soon as I'm ready. This will save you the trouble of having to download it and then upload it. This goes for anyone else who wants to be a host.

That jump is the most beautiful form of the bounce bug :O) Extremely hard to perform. First of all, you must know that if you jump on that pad on ospdm6 when you land on that bottom floor you bounce. The secret to that jump is to *completely stop* just as you land. You bounce back up! It took many many many tries for me to land that trick. Gaz also landed it, I don't know how many tries it took him.

the osp6 one is yours and it was the first of its kind, mine is on osp5 (at the video ending) and it's... balls :P too nah

as for tries it takes : enough not to try it in a game unless you (stands for anyone sooo skillfull) think you are so good :), well prove it :D

there is a secret to make it easier tho, but well i trust ppl they'll find it hahahh :)

now for one's info, although this vid has many MF material (absolutely legit and deserved) and is edited by himself, not bad to that, its mainly a group effort as for the OB tricks and techniques, we found so many things when thinking of it like thrice :).

i'm proud of what we achieved and of MF for he's been constructive as was b3nt and *US* as a whole.

and, no sorry no cheats were used, no animal was harmed either

your demos on t4 (on dm17 too) were amazing,
with your knowledge of q3 engine and coding abilities you could probably look for work in id ;p

i develop the physics part in games for a living, modestly, im a bit off in advanced math but basics i know :) enough to recode quake for the physics part. actually i did code a little quake emulator in a few hours :P.

This was ENTIRELY a group effort. I feel the three of us put in a equal amount of time. If you guys read the tribulation.txt file you would have noticed Gaz got a special thanks for his coding skills. He created special mods so that I could easily do freecam views during demo playback. He also provided for so many other easy ways to do the standard third-person camera shots. And lastly, he basically made almost all of our bounce tricks possible. We knew of a few before we started talking with him but afterwards we were able to perform the sticky bounces and the pad bounces and all that other neat stuff you see in the vid. Gaz is a smart guy!

actually i liked his demos even more than the movie :p

See most server's operating systems will only allow soo many connections (for downloading) on at a certain time. I think i finally hit the limit to my server (which only happens when everyone is trying to download the 600 meg file). You gotta give the servers some time to get less bogged if you haven't allready gotten it.

pretty nice tricks but 75% of the tricks are bounce bug/speed bug tricks that only seem to work in pmove and thus will never be used in actual competition =\

LOL, I didn't intend for of my tricks to be used in competition! If you are looking for usefulness go download the other 100 movies out there that show pros using intelligence in match. Even knowing every trick in the book you are not going to do good in a competition unless you have aim and are intelligent. My tricks are entirely for show, I don't claim to be a good fragger. Sorry you were expecting otherwise :O)

nexx, this video eats up bandwidth like you wouldn't believe.. i allready have 700 downloads and my server has been packed since i finally finished the full version upload at 6 central time (its only been 3 hours) and so far 45 gigs have been registered on my statistics so far (for the downloads alone) this video will most likely kill small hosts with the volume of people that come and get these vids

I downloaded the lower quality version, and didn't find it to be 'low quality' at all... so I'm not complaining :)
If that's low quality, I'd hate to think what the 600 meg version is like.

Personally I think that the quality of the low-quality vid is a tad better than Promo4. I'm comparing my vid to this one because Promo4 is a well-known vid. I felt that a 640 by 480 resolution was needed for my vid. The high-quality 600MB download basically preserves all textures. It looks like Q3. The low-quality vid is identical to the high-quality vid in every aspect except the video bitrate. I actually used a lower bitrate than Promo4 and a higher resolution for the low-quality vid. I know that b3nt used 1-pass encoding for the Promos so I think I was able to get that little extra quality with the 2-pass encoding I did. Anyways, if you want a crystal-clear picture the 600MB download is for you. The 314MB download is an impressive show and isn't really "low-quality". It looks perfectly fine - ask anyone else here, they will tell you the same thing. Most are saying the low-quality vid is well worth the download. You get over 20 minutes worth of tricks!

A fantastic download manager that not many people seem to know about is wget.

To download something with wget you just type:

wget http://www.here.com/file.zip

And it goes off and gets it. You can stop it at any time and then continue by typing:

wget -c http://www.here.com/file.zip

You can also fork it to the background using '-b'

It supports ftp, http and a million other useful options. It works incredibly well with slow and unstable connections and never breaks downloads.

Its a standard Linux tool but you can get it for windows here:

Of course it can't do mulitsourced downloading but you don't need that if your connection is already maxed out.

besides the quality loss in the 300 version is noticable, i think 600 is a bit over the size required to get the same quality in divx. but i like it coz it has hardly any compression artifact.

Totally ironic mon pauvre, j'ai evidemment pas téléchargé un machin aussi gros, but anyway I'm sure those who can afford the download will enjoy it. Just too bad it'll be about a tenth of those who would have enjoyed it if properly encoded.

you cant compare dvdrips of normal movies to game movies, since they are often lower resolution and usualy have a bitrate sub 100k/s, which works fine for all those conversation shots with static backgrounds and slow moving dollying and panning etc

but you probably know that even your best quality divx movies gets blocky/pixelated when doing really fast turns and shakes etc, so 20minutes full of those really fast camera motions would look horrible at your 1.4h/600meg bitrate.


That said 600meg for 20minutes still sounds much (but since they released a 300meg version for us bandwidth impared people it kinda forgives the 600meg version :)

now, i havent yet seen either of them, but if the 600meg looks crap then im gonna whine, but i doubt it does.

it's very pleasing to watch. it took me a 0930 to 1300 download, i just didnt wait :)
my own material is very well presented in it and with a nice music. i'm happy :)

To michael flatley, it was a little unprepared, but there are some points that are just ridiculous, i understand the 600 meg version as being the best quality and all but now you know why i was saying in the beginning that it was too big. When i originally decided to host this video i was thinking yea.. ill get like 100-500 downloads a day max.. not 2000, with people using the direct link and avoiding the counter. But i will admit the video is great, but let this be a lesson in the future to the video makers out there, you can make your quality Great, but remember that size still matters (and the amount of hosts you have)

Not the hardest trick in the vid, but definetely one of the coolest. :)

you should have known before, how many people are going to download this.. simply look at how many downloads the other movies on this site have, and then take into account the announcements made for this video
it was clear that everyone wanted to download it

additionally, you forced the release of tribulation with creating your own version of the video, which the authors of tribulation surely didnt want anyone to download
there would have been a later release, thus, more mirrors, if you, own-age, wouldnt have pushed it
planetquake3 also decided then, to host the unofficial movie, even though i reminded roger1 some times that this was the *wrong* version, which put even more pressure on MF
some hours after the forced release, i got progamers.cz to host the 600 mb version, but they couldnt take the traffic as well, as to this time, they were the only host for this version, cause all other went down
ive asked other sites to host this video, but everyone refused to
too bad

now of course, we can be thankful to still have two hosts for the light version of tribulation, but ownage, dont act like you are completely unguilty on this one

By delaying the video only longer you would have just gotten more people in que for this video that were already waiting for it and make situations worse. In order to prevent these servers from crashing you would have to have like 15 different hosts so that it can all be distributed evenly. You should be lucky that i am taking this crap from you and still hosting the video at the same time. ALL = more then 10 people a SECOND joining in the attempt to download the video. The fact that the video is 600 megs means that it takes longer for everyone to download meaning the server will be tied up even longer PER person. it wouldn't take long for ANY server to get killed by this. unless we had like 10 servers hosting this video (which we didn't) we might not of had this mess

btw, when i created the recompressed version of it. the intentions of that was to save my server from doing what it did with the 600 meg version. :/ I did not make the video for attention I am allready hosting the vid what more attention is needed? sorry you see it that way

i got an idea! y doesnt someone use winrar and compress and split the 600 meg file in 2's or 4's. That way the files could be distributed alot quicker and thus would be easier on the hosts and the ones who want to download it =)

thats the best idea yet.. but the problem still lies on the fact that the demand for this video is too much for the servers to handle because reguardless of how many times you split up the video into little rars people will still have to download the same amount and the volume of people downloading the files is too much which causes My personal server to crash

i have a question: has anyone of you heard of bandwidth or user limits on file servers yet?
if the stress on your server is too much, set it to allow max 10kb/s, and only one download, for each ip
additionally, you could set the user limit for your server to whatever you want

i realize that the size will be the same amt. but if it was broken into suppose 4 files then we could assume that the 1st file would get distributed out quickly, even hosted on other servers and the other files would follow. and if you also had a user limit or bandwidth limit as stony suggested like on an ftp site then you could solve your bandwidth issues and the files would spread on their own. or you could simply have it so that each server only has 1 of the files....

its up to you though =)

sorry stony can't please everyone, my solution is this, I have a oc48(rezonq3.com) Dedicated to this video itself, and my personal server (own-age.com) will not host this file) once i notice the video slows down to what speed all the other videos are being downloaded at on my website, then i might think about putting it on on my website. either way i am still hosting the video and i don't suffer from only allowing 1 file to be downloaded. (ps btw if i put it so that 1 person can download 1 file at a time they would not be able to browse the site) hence my problem with your solution stoney. and a ftp account is too expensive for the time being. (one that would have a fast connection as well. (that i know of)

so which file will u host on rezonq3.com? the full 600 meg or the light version?

Ok, I finally decided to go for the 300MB version.
And was not disappointed.

I liked the video, but Gaz is really the man. His t4 run just owns.
I dunno so much how hard other tricks are (I don't doubt they're really hard), but this run just killed me, for I've spent alot of time in doing these tricks separately.

Now I guess the most impressive tricking performance ever remains Gaz' drjumpiipro_owned.

I'd like to have the opinions of trickjumpers.

IMO Gaz is the best trickjumper (prolly because I mostly apreciate good circles -and less stuffs with grenades or plasma).

I've long since come to realize that there is no best. What we do is entirely subjective.

Hmm, that sounds about right... When I watch Tribulation (I've seen it like 20 times now :) ), I look to see who does what, and sometimes I think, "That one must've been Flatley's! It was sooo wicked!" and often it is either Gaz or B3nt... So all three of them are disturbingly good.
Tribulation is gonna get shown on quite alot of LAN projectors i suspect.... I remember the wows heard when we showed Japex trickjumping vid some time ago. When they see this one they'll probably uninstall cs and go to bed.

as for uninstalling cs, i've been always wondering how come they dont do so when im on a lan and a game is projected.
q3 duels are quite impressive on a bigscreen, more than when you rewatch a demo of it. i prefer qw duels but q3 is just much more readable for a newbie.
they just dont understand whats goin on, or the motivations to play this game, they need an easy game, not one you have to play for months to just be mediocre...

To explain my point of view a bit, (as I said) I enjoy more watching nice circles, and less tricks with grenades or plasma (and circles are more common tricks, so it may require alot of training to realize them better than the rest).

The sequence I like the most, as a nontrickjumper is the t4 run. I don't enjoy so much complicated stuffs with plasma or grenades as circles based tricks, coz those are the only I (and most players) do and it impresses me to see someone mastering those better than the others.

it took basically two weeks to make the tricks and work out all techniques but the movie production took major time which is normal since MF wanted his first vid to be good, so we tricked some more for a while

the T4 run is something quite trivial, well basically old tricks just the OB at the end was new :). the accels arent that hard when you make em again and again (but i have to repractice them each time for an hour to get the feeling right), the harder rest is packed at the beggining so... took me an evening to make it perfect, hope so. its nicely presented in the vid, thanks again to mf =).

drjumpiipro, took me a week to practice the shit and make it, then another few days for the second version, ie the revenge.

i like tricks that seem impossible or tricks that look easy but aren't. this answers to the next question since those are the same, there are many tricks that i have problems with.

the dm13 mh grab trick is a common finding but this demo was b3nt's, we released a bunch of demos on dm13 for that trick looking for a consistent way to make the trick and we found out, and much more.

when making the tricks i was like keeping bothering mf and b3nt to include the most possible tricks for non trickjumpers or progamers to attract their attention, happy to see we succeeded at that in your case.

Why do you not reference my ospdm1 demo? I put some hard strafes in that demo, try them if you don't believe me! That was definitely the toughest run of tricks I've ever done, I could probably do them much more easily now that my strafing has improved.

Also, Camping Gaz mentioned that it took 2 weeks to do the tricks. I think he is a tad off :O) We created a private forum and started posting tricks there on 4-26-02. The movie was released exactly 2 months later. I was tricking hardcore up until the last two weeks before release and then was still tricking lightly days before release (had to add a few more demos to make it 20 minutes...). Note that this 2 months does not take into account the time spent on demos BEFORE this project started. It took Gaz a great deal of time to prepare his dm17 demo for the pimpjumps competition and it took me weeks of preparation and tricking to produce those ospdm1 and ospdm2 demos. I have to be honest here and say that the amount of time I spent tricking was way more than the amount of time I spent on movie editing.

yeah its just that i remember being tricking alot for two weeks when i was on holidays :), thats basically about the time we started the project, so maybe i spoke for me only.
after that two weeks most tricks were done, or maybe the half of them after all... :)

Has any of you tried playing with forward on mouse1 and backward on mouse2?
I've almost always played like that and I find it slightly better than normal configs. I know nobody else but me who has this config.
I think it may be an interesting cfg for a trickjumper as you have 4 fingers for forward, backward, left, right keys instead of 3. :)

Four as opposed to three isn't optimal, now is it? We work with too many buttons as it is!

true, for me at least, mouse2 for jump is okay tho, i use space.
i have a friend who uses mouse2 for forward and uses two adjacent keys for side movement like CV dont remember exactly, he kept this config from original quake1 :)

Actually, it certainly depends on what mouse you have, how you hold it, etc.
The way you move your mouse is of course different when you press the buttons, but I don't think it has to be an inconvenient, I think it can be helpful.

For aiming, your way to move your mouse is changed if you press mouse1 to go forward (or mouse2 to go backward), but so is your movement, so if you find a good feeling with it, I think it can help.
And I fire with space, so that's something important too. (I've always heard the left hand was more quick to react, for some neurological reasons :)

For tricking, I've always enjoyed doing nice strafing and was rather above average (coz I don't have the time to play anymore :(. I don't mean it's because of my cfg, but I think such a cfg can be interesting. Now I couldn't say it's absolutely better or worse than a normal cfg.

How do you get such acceleration with strafejumping... takes me like 4-5 jumps to get the speed you guys get after 1 jump =\

That's what you use for the q3dm17 gap jumps (and loads of other tricks)? Can you control that bug?? It could be VERY usefull in play if controlled properly.

I love that jump on dm17 where you get to the rail platform without using the main launch pad, or by rocket jumping to it. I never would have thought it was possible :)

btw, I've seen both versions now, and I honestly can't see the difference. Is it just me?

extremely nice video, the size wasn't tho. 610mb for 20mins? I re-encoded that to 100mb. A ~90min dvd rip might take 600+mb in 720x480 but not a 20min q3-vid :P

Music was good, and the tricks amazing. I especially liked when u did like 10 tricks in a row, while every single one of those tricks would be hard to perform to most of us.

Those dvd rips look quite crappy, in my opinion. They look nothing like a real dvd. I can't even understand how people compare the two. I do admit a 20 minute movie can be watched and understood when it is compressed down to 100MB but it looks like crap to me. I wish everyone would stop saying there is little to no difference. This difference isn't seen by you but it is seen by me. Some of us have huge monitors, good eyesight, and an understanding of quality. There was a 300MB download provide for you guys.

Well of course you see the difference, MF, because you've spent so many hours working on the video in the first place. I can tell you right now, I have an excellent and large monitor, fine eyesight, and an understanding of what is and what is not quality. Maybe if I have both versions playing side by side I'd be able to tell a difference, or if I watched one version 5 times in a row and then watched the other, but I doubt the majority of people can honestly say they thought one version is much superior to the other.

I never said I was talking about just my movie. I'm not pleased with nearly all avi movies on the net. It takes about one hour to download a 600MB movie. Seeing as how the vid runs for 20 minutes I think you are getting quite a lot for free. I'd like to see the net head in the direction of higher quality movies.
