Most peopleNot that I don't want to be able to run LAN servers in QL, but you have to be realistic. Not "most" or any significant part of QL audience cares about it. You are tiny minority and id software won't listen to you and if all people who want LAN server stop playing QL, id won't even notice. So go and play a game that allows you to play how you want to instead of beating your head against a wall.
When beta and the release I never heard of it nor did anyone else I know, so what does that tell you?
Quake 4 had a large advertising campaign, but it fell short because a) it wasn't very good and b) you needed a good PC to run it (back then). Funnily enough both are the opposite for QL
I knew about previous Quakes, just didn't play them because I didn't know other people still played them (derp)
How did Q3 fail? Plenty of tournaments, plenty of players... You say the last Quake game to sell was Quake 2 but then you've got to remember that times have changed and Q4 was sold primarily as a single player.
It's not hard to see a game like QL be successful, just as other multiplayer FPS titles with low graphics and high gameplay/competition have
