Maybe I over-complicate it, but in my mind it's easy to round up to the multiple of 5, +5, +20 (or 30 for mega) then subtract or add the number I rounded.
For example, if I pick up mega at 8:17, I know that 15 +35 is 50 so it's 50 + 2 = 8:52 and same for subtracting (so if I pick up the next one at 8:54 I know that 55 + 35 is 90 so 90 -1 = 89 (which I automatically in my head know as 29)
Totally overcomplicated, but I cba to get used to another way of doing it and I just do most of it by memory. Usually time 2 items this way and the yellows by feel but the downside is sometimes if I'm busy during a fight, I'll round up but forget to round down again so I'll turn up late. Doesn't happen too often, but it's a pain. Saying that, I don't much play duel too much but when I do it works out alright most the time.
These timer things I always thought were pretty useless to be honest. Might be an idea to stick one on an ipod or something for if you really have nothing better to do, but I find that just watching games or demos I find myself timing items and the best way to get better at timing is actually playing because timing on itself is pretty easy, the difficult part comes with doing it at the same time as paying attention to other shit going on in game and memorizing the times (at least for me anyway)
negative. Just memorize the list for both mega/ra times, so there is no math involved whatsoever, not even adding. It's just reflex time.
For the longest time i wanted to try timing shit but i hated the math, and memorizing the list looked even harder, so i just tried various methods until i bit the bullet and memorized that shit.
Now its ingrained into me, i see 44 on my car clock and think 09, lol.
Less math -> easier to recall the numbers and remember them in order of what spawns first. I can get 2 items down perfectly now but recalling them in order is still a bit shitty.
Same way I do it. After awhile you just know what the answer is without calculating it. But i've given up on exact timing, I'm just doing instinct now, I play much better with it.
picking up mega at 8.54 would make it spawn at 9.29 ;)
But I do timing the same way as you do and then with practice you can time quicker and quicker with lesser risk to mistime.
I still find it difficult to time two items at the same time on certain maps though. EG DM13, I only time the mega's most of the time... I'm always approximately good on the RA's on around 5 secs though so it doesnt show.
I used to do this until I decided to change my "timing strat" thanks to a warsow player named woodyfly. I now only use the last digit of the clock so I can quickly think of the exact last digit second it will spawn. I then just use my feel and the other items to figure out the full timing.
It really cleared my mind for more room to think and concentrate on the other things happening in the duel.
Personnaly, for mega, I just take into account that 30 secs is half a minute so whatever time you pick it up its the opposite sit of the clock, +5. Ex: 1:14 = 1:44 +5 = 1:49. 2:36 = 3:06 + 5 = 3:11. 5:52 = 6:22 + 5 = 6:27 Just the opposite side of clock +5. Pretty easy that way I find. Same for RA but -5...
I can't decide what's more sad -- deluded German basement dwellers or retarded Croatians who jump to equally retarded conclusions such as that it's my fault the upload failed.
For me it was much more a problem to remember to calculate time, rather than calculation itself. I.e. I pick up MH and then after 10 seconds I realize my head was bothered with something else and I forgot to note MH pickup time and calculate respawn time and now I don't know the timing.
Then I just started to watch any random demos or just spec random players, focusing exclusively on remembering item times. I.e. I didn't pay attention to the game at all, but just for every picked up item I forcefully noticed the pickup time and calculated next respawn. After a couple dozen games, this timing reflex was completely embedded in my head and I never had problems with timing anymore.
Yeah, but never used that since I used F1 for scoreboard (default) lol :D
Timing according to feeling was quite fun, and actually got quite decent at it. Obviously nothing compared to using the clock though.
in UT there was a program called "master timer" it was considered as a cheat in the leagues and therefore forbidden. but anyway ID wants us to cheat, because they turned off pb recently to make it easier.
"where you write from 0-59 on cards with the correct numbers on the backside or something"
that's exactly what i was saying. i'm surprised people are taking such great lengths to learn something that can be memorized relatively quickly with flash cards.
