I've got the Acer GD245HQ, but I already knew the joy of 120 Hz. I had a CRT, although I've been playing for the last half year with a 75 Hz TFT. The CRT initially broke and by the time I repaired it, the new TFT already arrived . Well, I've spent money on the TFT, so I decided to use it in favor of the CRT and while it was damn bad for shooters like ET and Quake, I preferred watching movies, browsing websites etc. on it.

The new Acer has nearly all the pros of the CRT (while having some pros which neither of them had) and all the pros of the TFT I had. Damn, it even is bigger than the TFT (21.5" -> 24") I had while unfortunately still having that fucked up aspect ratio (16:9 instead of 16:10) which is not optimal for browsing the web. If it'd have pivot and height adjustment, than it would be the perfect monitor imo. Pardon, genuine LED back light (not the shit we have now, for instance the BenQ XL2410T) and it would have been perfect. The bad viewing angles don't bother me (or at least not that much), neither do the rather poor blacks or not perfect color reproduction.. if both were my priority I would have gone for an IPS monitor while I obviously didn't.

I have GD245hq too its really nice crisp picture but I do get annoyed with buzzing sound of it and breaking half in 2d pisses me off.

Yea I have one too, and its wayy better for gaming than my 2233rz I use at work.

2233rz is awesome for having mass windows and spreadsheets always going on the desktop.

My old pentium3 processor and GF2 Ultra ran the game just as seamlessly on the exact same trinitron monitor I still use to this day

Point is as much as I like the CRT, it's bigger then a fishbowl and just won't fit on my current desk. Not that I'd really use it anyway since I like widescreen

the 120 Hz monitors are nearly as good as good CRTs (while the latter are quite cheap opposed to the expensive 120 Hz monitors). Okay, they're still A BIT worse than the best CRTs, but they wouldn't make you play any worse. The difference is just too small in my opinion (while some claim they feel a difference, not my problem though).

define 'better'.. good luck finding a 22" 1680x1050 that runs 120hz these days.

This is just a flash watch you run and then you take a picture while it is running, and by saying polled every 15ms, you mean it works with increments of 15ms? if you are saying that, it is not the case. Anyway i dont know anything about flash.

so, how is it possible to have numbers like 321, see 1st image or in the last image, the diference seems to be about 10 or 20ms with numbers ending in 9, if it would be increments of 15, you would always have endings of 15 30 45 00. you can always download the thing and test it yourself.

one year ago you only could get values incremented by16.6666ms noticable when doing start-pause very fast for example - 149/166/183 ms and nothing in between

No, i just used the 2 dvi outputs. i dont have money for that! I know that is not the best way to do it, but still, you can see some diferences across the monitors. Also note that the crt i used is not a masterpiece! I saw a lot of reviews about it and compared to the fw900 the input lag is about 10ms for the 2233rz and 0ms for the crt ofc.

I'm trying to get my T220 setup alongside the 2233rz. The 2233rz in 120hz, the T220 I don't care so much about (60 is fine since I just want it for messenger, irc etc) but everytime I plug the T220 and fiddle around with settings, the 2233rz gets forced down to 60 or 75 :[

in fact i could only use 100hz for both crt and 2233rz the other were forced either to 75hz or 60hz....

How to easily check if your graphics card supports dual dvi?

8800GT was the first from nvidia to support it. dont know about ati

Just picked up a ASUS VG236HE (version where you don't pay 25% extra for some stupid 3D-glasses,) and it feels really nice to have 120hz again. Only a few things that annoy me with the monitor. Of course it is that stupid 16:9 format which means about 11% less space for when not watching movies or playing games and less Y space information. Kinda looks like a 22" when standing side by side with my 24" 16:10 monitor, even though it is 23.6". Aiming with LG feels a lot easier than on my old 60hz LCD . QL still feels random as hell though (which really isn't much of a surprise).

is there some issue regarding the 120Hz when operating on a non-native resolution?

i know that it works with NV IDIA cards but there used to be some issues with ATI Cards and this Monitor respectively 120hz on non-native res@windows 7. my 120 hz tft made a humming/buzzing sound too (when it was relatively new), but it disappeared completely with time.

Well I think you are guessing wrong ; ) It really disappeared, I'm perfectly sure. Also, it was present only on some weird internet sites. The monitor had problem in dealing with very specific color schemes, now it doesn't - or not that I can hear it does.

All monitors do it in fact, but on some it's much louder and yes it's related to what is being displayed. On that lagom lcd test thing, there is one test that has always been really noisy on all the monitors I used.

That timer is the worst possible way to test lag. That timer is the reason why so many sites have inaccurate results these days.

1. That timer is not guaranteed to update at any particular interval. Sometimes it doesn't update for 20-30 ms. Virtual Stopwatch is a more consistent timer, and the bars program is designed to be synchronized with the refresh rate.

2. You can't see where each monitor is refreshing. Both LCD and CRT monitors refresh from top to bottom, but the LCD might be a few milliseconds behind due to the pixel response times. You can't see that when using a timer on one part of the screen. Also, I've seen pictures of plasma displays buffering the output and displaying the frame all at once. That can be seen with the bars program.

3. If you're using clone mode, you can't see if the monitors are synchronized when using a timer. The bars program will synchronize with one monitor, and the other monitor will tear if the refresh rate isn't exactly the same. In that case, the results are accurate enough if you wait for the tearing to roll off the screen before taking a picture.

All those problems combined produce inconsistent and erratic results. A faster shutter speed is not going to fix those problems. In fact, a fast shutter speed makes the picture darker, making it harder to see if a number is just starting to come in on an LCD monitor. The bars program doesn't need a fast shutter speed to be accurate.

The 2233rz certainly does NOT have 11ms OUTPUT lag (there's no such thing anyway, learn English please) since it is almost as fast as a CRT regarding pixel response time.
The only lag compared to a CRT could be the INPUT lag, but you need a proper test protocol to assess that, and very few websites/people have one. Hence my previous posts.

Even if it were 10ms, that's ridiculously small and you would never notice it if you didn't know about it. 10ms input lag is not the same as a 10ms network lag or a 8ms lag for a USB mouse. It's completely different.

pixel response time = ghosting = what digital versus was measuring in your earlier post (and they do that just fine)

Why do we call it "input" lag? Because the lag happens when the monitor receives data from the GPU (and processes it), B-E-F-O-R-E anything is displayed. That's the whole point.
Pixel lag (ghosting) comes in later, and pixel lag on a 120hz LCD is completely negligible and certainly NOT 11ms. 11ms would be pretty blurry (at least by my standards).

BTW digitalversus changed their ghosting test protocol recently (NOT the input lag test protocol) so now they do show the ghosting time measured in ms rather than frames like they did before (and for the good 120hz panels it's below 5ms btw, that includes the Samsung 2233rz)

I have a 2233rz, and my CRT @ 85 hz/85 FPS is STILL smoother and gives me a much better gaming experience than the 2233rz @ 120hz/120 FPS. And I'm pretty anal about these things. I know some people here will violently disagree, but I used to play UT2004 on servers that had a capped netspeed which limited FPS to 85,, and I could play well with my CRT, while my 2233rz at 120 hz and 85 FPS was just a complete blurry bloody nightmare. Loaded up a local server for 120 fps and changed the refresh rate, and was much better obviously but still the CRT's smoothness at 85 hz/85fps still won.

To unlock "> 85 FPS" in UT2004 on online servers, assuming that you want 120 Hz with 120 FPS. Keep in mind that on each (internet-)serverchange the netspeed value will be set back to a value of 10000.

I have always played Quake Live on a 60 hz (or less) Dell laptop with integrated graphics (i.e. massive frame drops). Every now and then on a small map I'll get 120 constant fps, and I hit pretty decent accuracies (35% LG, 60% rail, etc.).

If I ever get to play on a 120 hz screen, I would f**** rape all these noobs.

from what i understand framebuffer allows for 120hz constant output, so if vga outputs 60fps it will essentially draw every frame twice. does that still make it a lot smoother, or simply bit easier on ur eyes bcz of high refresh rate ? if any of those...

basicly, im thinking of getting 2233rz too, to replace my shitty 17" lcd, but i dont want it for quake only.. idk if it still makes a big difference when u reach only say 60-80 fps or whatever, or other area of usage ?

well your game experience won't be exactly smooth, quite the opposite. but it has its pros too, eyes obviously and also the image won't become blurred, clear but not smooth. I prefer the latter, so would choose i.e. com_maxfps 76 and r_refreshrate 75.

but if you could get say 85 fps stable than it would be nice to play with r_refreshrate 85. you would notice a improvement in that case.

the above does only apply to fps games, I have yet to come to a conclusion regarding other games (arcade racing etc.). if you want I can do some testing and tell you.

imo if you're not that much into q3 engine games that you could run with 125 fps, a better choice would be either getting an ips monitor for similar money, but with much superior viewing angles etc. or getting a tft, but for a lot less money.
