My car isn't worth much now, probably ~£2000 max.

I'd have to buy something for around £1000, leaving me with £1k to move out with, I might aswell save up for 3 months and not sell my car. (which i've already started btw).

KM/L = 9.35 = UK MPG = 26.42

In metric we usually measure it differently.

We say how much it takes liters to do 100 kilometers (like 7,6 l/100km)

I ran into that 'problem' in the US. But you can do a quick rand dirty conversion in your head:

Divide 250 by the value you have and you get the opposing one.

Example: your 7,6 l/100km.

250 / 7,6 is about 33.
That means your car gets roughly 33 miles per gallon.

Honestly while in SA I will avoid driving as much as possible. It's a deathtrap here. I know of about 10 people personally that have died in car accidents.

However, it does make life very hard since there is very little public transport, I will also need it for my work once my company goes into marketing mode. To that end I will probably be buying a second hand BMW. (That's light on fuel - lol yeah I wish)

I concur, it's one of my favourites along with the E28. Was petrol, only 2.2L, though that didn't stop it from consuming 14 L/km during the cold winters here :P

I rode the 2.2l one - and it had pretty nice sport feel even though it weights 1,4t.

I'm thinking about getting the 2.0d version (low fuel consumption for ~150bhp), but much more expensive and with bigger mileage than the same power petrol version :/

Yeah, it feels good, I had tons of fun with it during winter (apart from getting stuck in snow that's thicker than two sheets of paper, because it's RWD).

Unless gas money is really an issue, I don't suggest going for 110kW. I had 125kW and in some situations it was still lacking power to be fun. If fuel consumption is an issue, I would maybe (if you have the money) look around for a cheap 330d, I get 10 l/km on my 330xd vs the 14 I had with the 320i.

Is there a reason 'blizzaks' is better than just studded tire? I have all weather tires on, and I really wore the corners out cornering before snow... so I had some swiveling problems in turns and even some problems going uphill on ice. I'm considering to get studded tires right now. Not sure if it matters, tires now are 205/55R-16, FWD.

unless you drive on icy roads most of the time studded tires make no sense. on dry roads the ride is rough and noisy, the studs are damaging the road and they're not even that great on snowy roads.

i'm very happy with my blizzak ws60 snow tires. the entry/exit road of the apartment complex i live in is a little hilly, i was late for work when we got like 2 ft of snow after christmas because i had to wait until all the cars that got stuck in it were removed and i was able to plow right by them without any problems lol.

I found some Blizzak WS70, and I'm close to getting them, but I'm still hesitant. From what I read online, any studded tire is better than 'blizzak' because it grips through the snow to the hard base. I've had studded tires before, and having driven before that on all(no)-season tires, it was amazing to not change the driving style at all, in any weather, and I live in New England(http://picasaweb.google.com/pavel.com/Weather#5443525550350023650). However, I've not driven on quality non-studded winter tires before, so I can't personally compare. Now, are you comparing based on first hand experience?

Brand new, studded tires provide approximately the same performance as unstudded _on fresh snow_. Though because the unstudded winter tires are generally made from a much softer mix, they will wear out quicker, after a year or two the advantage should go to studded tires. On icey surfaces or hard snow, there's a huge difference.


In my experience, studded tires have much better performance during winter on average. I have driven a lot of second hand BMWs/Audis/MBs imported straight from Germany, the unstudded winter tires that you guys use are absolutely horrible compared to real winter tires. Trust me, Germans and Frenchies don't see winter road conditions that we have even in their worst nightmares :P

Thats part of the equation though. In Russia, in my city, it snowed so regularly, I wouldn't see asphalt for half a year and there would be ice/compact snow built up everywhere and just hopefully some sand on that. Northeast USA is *a lot* better, in general, but sometimes a really shitty storm hits, and it thaws->freezes over a lot and unexpectedly.

I would, actually... It doesn't matter how thick the ice is, if it's a solid.

I would actually say that the thickness affects road conditions quite a bit. You will constantly have ice on the road, which never melts away (well, it might not melt away for months) even if you use salt and plows. The biggest impact is that if you then get a few cm of hard snow on the ice, you will get much less traction than you would on an plain icy road, since you'll be driving on the snow which slips away between the ice and your car. Also, if you have a perma-layer of thick ice on the road all winter, it will melt unevenly due to traffic, which means you have a hard, uneven, slippery surface that will flip your car sideways if you drive through an irregularity at a bad angle.

There's a reason studded tires are banned in Germany, but the most popular type of winter tire in the Nordic countries :P

yeah they don't make those over here... focus rs would be sweet. if you want a turbo'd hatchback you're pretty much stuck either with this one or the GTI which is more expensive and has less power.
