HoQ Admins who have pro would spawn a server if needed when ever possible but guys......... to play competative you should really have at least premium. and guys... pro is worth it!! if you have a clan or friends that like to train away from the public ;]
Premium is fine and i think its good, Still get access to all the premium maps ect... but if you have pro you can now edit your own server settings i.e. gravity score limits time limits and it's much more fun =P,What ever you choose to do GL and HF Quakeing ;]

Only usefull for people who really want to achive something in Quake Live and be good at it. It is also needed for TDM/CTF teams so that they can prac against organized opponents (however there only the team-captain or one player needs to buy Pro-Acc, the rest can stay with premium).
Premium-Account:
A must for every average to high-skilled player, cuz the most mappools consist of atleast two premium maps. Also being able to join premium-servers without an invite is a good feature, aswell as no advertisements.
Standart-Account:
Enough for every newcomer. You don't need to spend money on QL if you are only tier 1-3, since you still have to learn a lot and there are also tournaments without premium-need. However the adverts are quite anoying (especially because they don't work properly).
Not really. If I do end up renewing, I'd go premium not pro. There's no shortage of people to spawn servers, and if you really need a premium server to play with friends, there's plenty of them
i got pro and i wouldnt undo it for a second, it feels so easy to play when you always can have a server, no matter gametype, time, whatever. its just a relief :p
and if you're gonna start playing in #tdmpickup, then yes please for the sake of god atleast get premium :p
anyway, its hard to say not knowing your gaming background. also it makes a huge difference if you are just playing for the fun of it or if you are trying to get better. if you actually get some decent training partners to play X games in a row, focus on specific aspects of your play, analyse your own demos and pro play, then you will make a huge skill jump in a shorter time than most people would expect. but from a certain point on the progress of getting better will slow down drastically and in the end you still might never get into a zotac final becasue the top players are just frickn good and have some talent on top of their experience
just have fun playing and improving your game with the time you are able to spend on ql and see where it gets you if you ask me
maintaining skill is not that hard.. play 20% of peak, say, 1 hour instead of 5, each day - and, according to the 80/20 rule - 80% of your skill will stay! of course, change of maps and everyone else getting better screws you over xD
in any case, the important thing is that you need at least a few years on your back.. it would be interesting to find out what is the least amount of hours any of the say, best 20 players around now have on their résumé
I would guess none of them have less than 5 years experience, and like 2000+ hours. the average is probably closer to 8 years and 3k hours :p
That seriously depends on your previous experience. For top players from CTF/TDM/CA who already have awesome aim and combat skills, they can get away with learning how to time items and predicting what the enemy is planning, which takes a little time but would be doable relatively fast.
If you have never been at least Div2 in Quake or a similar popular FPS, it will take you years to get to the level you're talking about.
am I the only one that thought that he meant pro as in terms of "becoming a professional quake player?" And then xsi comes along and says: I did it last week and don't regret, yet.
actually it's kinda nice to be able to spawn a server when you want a quick duel/2on2 with your friends and have no randoms interfering. i don't regret buying pro and will renew my subscription.
Yeah the pro service is pretty nice, just sometimes harder to get games going because of the basic peeps. I hope they will allow people to buy extra invites so then pro subscriber can invite more than 3 people. I can set up a standard server and have people play pretty fast, but if i set up premium content on a server it takes a while to get people on. So charging $ per extra invite would be a good compromise since it is probably unrealistic that id will allow non-paid players to play new maps.
I agree, I've only had pro for a bout a week, and about half my games are on spawned servers. And you can invite friends without premium to play on the new maps.
I actually really like this system of servers, rather than some p2p shit, or renting/vps servers. Works out great if you think about it, and worth the money compared to other services.
The obvious answer is no. ql is spearheaded by an incomptent development team who have done nothing but push people away by ridiculous ads, lack of support and communication and after 2 years since open beta they have yet to advertise the game anywhere but on their own blog. This game has no future. spend your money more wisely.
yes, it's worth it. But premium isn't worth it. The fact you can spawn servers around the world is worth the cost. But the pubs don't play premium much so mise well stay basic or go pro. People are just not going to pay to play maps or gametypes.
it's only worth going pro if you are a clan leader, own a league or organize games on a routine basis from irc or elsewhere. The average player does not need pro, and premium is a complete waste so it's best to stay standard or better yet return to q3 which, for north american players, is booming ever since most stopped playing ql.
No offence but I just dont get why people wouldnt cough up the 24/48 $ if they are gonna play the game, I mean unless you are unemployed its really nothing compared to any other expense you have.
