Just a thought as I don't know exactly how it stacks up but the Intel Sandy Bridge i3 2100 with integrated graphics (as in on the chip itself) may be an option, then you wouldn't even need a graphics card (and can add one later) and you'd have a pretty monstrous processing core. They're only £94.

i was having a look at those, not sure how good the graphics side is though. im hoping to build the WHOLE pc for less than £100 too =)

intel dual core 2.5, 8600gt, 4gb ram, w7 should suffice imho - maybe if u want spent some more take a 3.0 dual core and u should have max fps all the time.

I'm on an AMD dual core 2.2ghz, 2gigs of ram, and a 7800GT.

There might be one or two maps (like those huge ctf ones) that might run at a lower frame rate, but everything else is 125fps.

i remember playing q3 osp duel on stable 85 fps with a 450 mhz p3 and a geforce 2 mx..

yeah i remember when i upgraded to an xp2000 1ghz cpu a gig ram and a geforce 2mx (i think, was a looong time ago) and got 125 fps.

seems all the shit they added to ql requires a beefier cpu or gpu, would think integrated would be enough by now.

you could build off one of the new semprons, they all seem to unlock to dual cores and are only like 38 usd

dont go for the P4 3.0. I had a p4 3.2Ghz +2Gb of ram and an ati hd3850 and the cpu bottlenecked the performance. And btw, i thing one of those new amd fusion apu's might do the trick, but that needs to be tested.

i have had a the following setups in qlive.

amd64 x2 3800 @2ghz, 1,5 gb ram, gf 7800gs.
solid fps on small maps with max 8 players total.
80-125 fps on big maps or servers with alot of players.

c2d 6300 @2,1 ghz 3gb ram gf 460gtx
solid fps on all maps with max players.

I would go for a c2d, gf 260gtx and 2gb ram, should run quake smooth. should be cheap too.

I have 2600+ (1.9ghz) sepron and 5200fx , 1gb sdram. I got 125 fps in all modes in all maps :/ just I got freezes and other shit sometimes.

You should probably buy something a little above what you think the bare minimum is. The trend in ql has been that the newer maps and graphics features have progressively had slightly higher and higher cpu / gpu requirements. This will probably continue, at least with map detail, plus shading and postprocess options.

My guess is anything less than a mid-range c2duo means you'll struggle to get 125 fps on some maps.

I got 1.8 ghz dual core. 512 mb Ram, 256 mb gfx, 125fps on all maps with fojjis cfg.

I have a Q6600 (2.4ghz Quad core), 4gb ram, 4870x2 (2gb ram), and I get frame drops on those two maps really badly with r_vertexlight 0 + fox's gfx settings. Changing it to 1 gives me a stable 125fps; I find this really, really weird :(

what resolution? I use 1024x768, Nvidia random crap gfx card, everything on low except antialiasing.

I let the gfx card do the antialiasing, don't think there's any cvar in QL for that. I use 120 hz too, btw i use windows xp so it might drain less cpu.

You must have some strange settings, my other laptop that has 2.4 ghz Duo core 3 gb ram 256 mb GFX also have 125 fps on all maps. You sure you even have directx installed :P?

I can honestly say that I don't have any weird/crazy settings; for example:

cvar_restart;vid_restart;exec qlfox;vid_restart This will still give the same "lags" :(

Yes I have DX installed :P Although it may not even be needed due to idtech 3 being open gl and now the introduction of raw mouse input (DX was only ever used for mouse input iirc?)

The 4870x2 is a single, huge motherfucking card XD. Although I guess somewhere in the drivers one can force it to run on one GPU only. Not played about with the gfx drivers:it's definately QL thats the problem: CPMA + Q4MAX run at full chat without a hint of a problem whatsoever; crysis runs well too.

I'm still using firefox to run QL, may as well give chrome/prism/IE a shot and see if that changes anything.

Plus a 160gb 2.5" HDD that i had in this netbook before switching to SSD.

Now i need recommendations on a case please! I'm after something small, smaller than the average MATX desktop cases, basically the smallest that can accomodate this graphics card. Preferably less than £40 with or without a PSU.

OH and it doesn't matter about the space for an optical drive as I'm not putting one into it so can either have no space for one or I can cut the supports out of it.

I just built a new rig with the Antec 300 case and I couldn't be happier. My previous system was built inside a full tower and I started to regret it almost immediately after it was built. Much too large for my tastes. The 300 is a "mini" midsize case but it definitely has room for 12"+ video cards so I'm not sure how it earned that moniker.

The Antec 300 is also nice because it has options to add three 120mm fans to the case design, and no side window so your room doesn't get lit up if you happen to have LED fans (I hate leds).

It's one of the cheapest cases available too. I think I got mine for 59.99 USD off newegg. Anyways, that would be my recommendation.
