Again whats the point, it will be the same ending, same players. You could take bracket from the last 15 similar tournaments and it will look almost exactly the same. This is getting boring...

if the results were random, then the game would be utter shit that proves that its not skilled based.

Since rapha/dahang/zero4 destroy the rest, we know our game takes skill. The playerbase is the only problem.

same with europe.. if cooler, cypher, spartie entered every online tourney in europe, you'd see them top 3, with strenx maybe placing top 3 every now and again. Otherwise, strenx wins em all.

It's because there aren't many rewards for Quake at the moment. There are really only a few select events which are DreamHack, IEM, and QuakeCon. There are no leagues or ladders of the sort that boast prizes of equal value. Other games have multiple tournaments going on at once, especially like with SC2 or CSS. Quake Live is still considered an "independent" game rather than mainstream. Id did not market the game, so really the community is suffering for it. All we can do is keep playing, keep hosting,keep organizing, and hope players will participate purely for sport.

Yeah, does anyone think it would be a better idea (and more helpful to the QL scene) if the top pros were NOT allowed to play in this tournament? It has to be really disheartening to a few players that sign up and have to play rapha or ZeRo4 in the first round or even second round.

If we are going to try to build the scene up, we should give the less experienced players a chance to build confidence and want to come back for the next tournament. Otherwise it's just banging your head into the established wall. Pretty soon, you will have the only 8 people that know they have a chance signing up and you have the same tournament every time with no variance.

Also, why is Vertical Vengeance not on the map list? You should adopt ESL's map list as the basis for all tournaments.

People rarely get a chance to play pros outside of organized events. As much as people love watching them play, people hate playing against them. At least that's the attitude in North America. If you look at the Zotac Duel, those players don't care if they play someone like strenx or Cypher the first round. They're just excited that they get to pit against their icons.

And about the ESL pool, it's a good pool, but we've already done that map list twice. It doesn't hurt to change it up.

People complaining about seeing the same people win the tournaments, where is your drive? It is a competitive game, and as such, the best players get rewarded.

Your point is irrelevant. I would agree with others saying that seeing the same faces do the same battles on the same maps can get very boring.

That is a false comparison. When new Tennis players want to start their pro careers, they don't start out by playing Federer or Nadal. They start out playing in tournaments for their skill level and as they progress so does the difficulty of the tournaments. Federer or Nadal don't play in futures tournament just so they can show off how bad they can beat their opponents each time and win the prize pursue...

Well.. that would be true for quake if they had tournaments that allow for "NON-PRO" quake players, but they don't so we all are challenged to do our best to out play a top tier player, which imo, is the only way to drive someone to get better. In counter-strike you see the same 3 teams "Na'vi, fnatic, and mouzsports" taking home trophies. Lan is all that matters.

It's always fun to see newer maps. It's just a matter of playing them that is always anticipated.

If anyone is wondering, the CSN site got a DDOS attack. It's down for some people on the east, and any recent additions have been deleted. I will remake the tournaments as soon as I can so you can sign up. Thanks for your patience and sorry for any inconvenience.

Without the prospect to face a pro plenty of people wouldn't even bother to sign up for zotac cups. Players are actually about the chance to play vs a pro here in europe. For some of us it is a big deal to play vs cypher.

I have to admit I laughed a little too hard when I first started seeing newbs use "slum." It caught on and is now ever present among the hundred something people that play in North America. The laughter is gone. The smiles have stopped.

There was no such thing as slumming in Quake 3. It was either you own or your bum got served to you on a silver platter, and people accepted it. I miss those days.

and by those days you mean you miss Quake 3 PERIOD. Dueling, TDM, ctf, even RA3.. good times.

I can agree that running divisional comps are great for players to build confidence and play under tournament pressure. But it takes a lot of effort from the players to run something of that scale. One day tournaments with no divisions are piss easy to run and make for some entertaining games. But yes I agree it doesn't build a player foundation because as some of you have noticed not everybody has the same drive to want to dedicate so much time to get good. They want to play people who have the same skill and time they have. I can understand both sides and hopefully you will see some divisional comps soon in na boys ;)

How about pro player challenge instead?

A group of 3 duelers challenge rapha and dahang. (all 3 must play at least 1 map)

If rapha wins, the duelers get nothing -> prize pool steadily raises each week.

If dahang wins the prize pool does the same (doubles each week).

This goes back and forth for 10 'tournaments'

At the end of the 10 tournaments, rapha plays dahang to decide who takes the money in the pot that they have collected.

First tournament is $100. 3 challengers vs rapha. They play 5 maps vs rapha. Bo5. If rapha wins, prize pot stays at $100, doubles next week.

If challengers win, they get the $100

2ND tournament.

Prize pot is $200 (if first challengers lost) Same bo5. If rapha/dahang keep winning the prize pot goes up and up each week.

If challengers win, they take the prize pot.

The incentive for rapha to win, is that after 10 weeks. He plays Dahang for both prize pots.

So dahang is trying to win bo5's vs his competitors every week too.

10 weeks x $100 = $1000 for rapha (if undefeated) + $1000 (for dahang if undefeated)
= epic 7 map battle for $2000

What is interesting is that, the other pros will play smart. And wait till rapha/dahang get up to their 9th round of tournaments being undefeated.

Then we will see zero4/chance/dkt challenge both of them and try to beat them in the bo5. Zero4 on t4 probably/chance on ztn /dkt on whatever the hell hes good on

[The challengers will be decided by popular vote - you can only challenge rapha/dahang twice but not with the same team (unless you win)]
