Only thing I always wonder 'never buy motherboard which is over price than cpu' And always get ram which supports highest speed your motherboard capable of.

For me your build is quiet nice which can give you solid 4 more years. You can play games you want it will never be outdated. Even I play Crysis 2 without lagging on my 3year old Q6600 and GTX 275 on medium settings. But I am still waiting for 2600k to price drop down. Which is enough for my requirements and will give me 4 more years.

You can always update your gfx card in future if you need. Your motherboard supports it. And new games doesn't load on CPU it gives load on GPU so you will be fine for few years. I updated mine once in 2 years from 9600gt to GTX 275 a year ago.

Games doesn't have to be max out to play anyway. Game settings adjustable according to your pc. Just get better frame rates so you can play without lagging.

but have you tried 2 years and a shit load of recoding and new features out of beta MP with pure servers and onconnect download, both SP and MP in 1 dll for windows and linux for client or server all in 1 pack just upload the mod to your gane server and restart with the Q43A fs_game and windows and linux clients will download it from your dedicated q4 game server, without any vehicles in MP maps with all new features enabled no extra bandwidth is used unless you have 16-128 players on a map and no different to running on a lan server -clientprediction, and a name change later Q43A #19

Also, the new "Sandy Bridge" Core i7 architecture refresh (http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=2063130#pid2063130) are an exceptional series of processors, you were unlucky with the timing of your build not to get one of these too :(

So I would personally sell your cpu, buy either the 2500K or the 2600K (sizeable performance boost, and incredibly overclockable for the future), and get a SSD, as you clearly have deep pockets :)

2500k 2600k are fast but with only with multiplayer overclocking. There is not much into it to overclock tbh. X58 is still better than P67 that is why I am waiting few more months and get more money sort out for Ivy Bridge.

Wait what?! These processors are as fast as the most recent extreme edition (with 6 cores) in everything but the most threaded of applications; for £180 you get a 2500K in comparison to £700 previous refresh performance.

They can overclock to 4.9Ghz (as you said, with their unlocked multiplier) on AIR....its the best bargain around for years, since the 144 opteron or Q6600. They're nothing short of incredible value for money...

I did not say they are not good. I said their overclocking / tweaking is not as good as 1366 Its not for replacement for 1366 they are replacement for 1156 so not quiet enthusiastic level of processors.

They do have solid performance. 2500k is far better than AMD 1100t 6core and there is no major difference in 2500k vs 2600k.

When X68 will come up you will see real replacement for 1366. I never liked P67 chipset so tho I had money I never bought it later they found problem in Sata controller but eventually they have corrected it. And only one 16x gfx slot it you run 2 cards they run at 8x and 8x unless they are nf200 chip. I had duel core before now I have quad core and I will buy hex core cpu in future but that just me and I am not yet settleing down another 4 years on 2600k..

I never intend to use more than one gfx card, so the lower number of PCI-E lanes available wasn't a problem for me; the only type of multiple GPU system thats worked decently for me in the past is a duel chip on a pcb rather than two discrete cards (it really, really depends on the drivers and the partially the game devs, which you'll know anyway). Was very disappointed with personal experience of sli and crossfire, although my 4800X2 has been great thus far :)

As for the SATA controller debacle, it was pretty clear that was going to get sorted out with bios revisions etc; and most decent motherboard vendors usually add in some more sata slots with third party chips; I don't plan on having silly numbers of HDD's in my pc, thats what a NAS is for imo...

I would not be surprised if the X68 was as "buggy" on release too, Intel are pretty notorious for that. I also don't really see that much benefit in going to six cores; applications are getting better threading wise, but programs which scale well with more than two to four processing cores are few and far between...let alone 6. I reckon 2 to 4 cores at a higher clock rate will be faster overall than 6 cores at a lower clock rate for quite a few years to come.

Also, my next upgrade will probably be a 2500K this summer, would be happy to have that for another four years or so; have had my Q6600 + 4800X2 for quite a few years now, and don't really need to upgrade either frankly; the ramp in performance in games from year to year has slowed quite a bit due to the console, and is most likely to continue too until the next gen consoles arrive :( It does mean that we can use the same hardware for a little longer though :)

So yeah, in short I don't have a problem with its chipset, and it would easily last me for another few years :)

Edit: With regards to the die shrink/Ivy Bridge, Intel have been having quite a few problems with this new process (certainly nowhere near the problems with the 45nm jump, but still),and I would be very surprised if they can run them much higher than 5.0ghz which you can get out of Sandy Bridge anyways... As for the on-die graphics, couldn't care less. Would also push down the prices of the current 2500K and 2600K. I don't think your going to see anything special/worth buying over these two processors until the "tock" of the new Haswell architecture.

On the contrary it's so much better now. Hitting 5Ghz speeds on air without any hickups. The only downside is that if u go to much above 1.4-1.5 vcore issues might appear in some cases.

Sandy Bridge atm is the best bang for buck you can get.

if you can afford it, buy those 3 gb gtx580´s, at least they won´t run out of vram at high resolutions. however graphics cards are the first component that becomes a bottleneck. now you´re spending twice as much on graphics alone. your 5870s are already choking on games like metro or crysis, expecially with high res textures and AA that can take easily more than 1 gb of video memory.

sure, 2500k would be even better as it overclocks higher (often to ~5 ghz with good cooling), but your 930 has more than enough power for today, better keep that money for ivy bridge. get an ocz vertex 3 if you want an ssd now.

This build is so last year.

The Sandy Bridge processor is not significantly faster than the Nehalem. Only by about 15-20% and the gaming performance boost in hardly noticeable.

Plus, the SB only has dual channel memory.

I am waiting for the 8-core SB processors late this year. Also, in 2012, the "Ivy Bridge" will be a 22nm shrink of the SB.

I'm waiting for a system in 2014 that will outclass your system...

coolermaster have a standalone water block, that need no pumps etc, just like a normal heatsink but water is the copper, which should be thermalgel

i never said it was good, thermalgel heatsink blocks are the future. though

standalone water blocks are only rubbish if you overclock, the heat doesnt have enough space to "dissipate" and are made sq/volume for that specs of the cpu

Use Noctua NH-D14 best air cooler on market beats H70. If your cpu is overheating then you need to back off your overclock or reduce voltage down.. more voltage to mean more heat.

H70 does me fine, I really can't be bothered to set up a bespoke watercooling kit, but I need something better than most air cooling heatsinks, and the H70 keeps my 2600k at about 45C at 4.6GHz after hours and hours of gaming. That's good enough for me.

Go and check reviews everywhere. NH D14 beats H70 hands down.

SB wont give you much advantage on I7 920 @ 4ghz but you can buy gfx card meanwhile. Wait for Ivy bridge it will improve your performance significantly.

SB processors are not enthusiastic level of processors they are replacement to 1156 not 1366. They are good but not when hardcore processors that will come at the end of this year.

Have you even seen any SB reviews because it sound's like you haven't. Not only it destroys an i7 920 performance but it even matches and outperforms sometimes the Extreme series on LGA 1366:
