Yeah it's a shame that Quake 1 SP is so forgotten nowadays. The game's style, atmosphere, and level design were really really good.

That said, id is a garbage company nowadays and I doubt they could it justice. I fully expect their next game to be some cookie cutter modern shit.

That's not true at all, one of the focuses of Rage is it runs at 60fps on both consoles. And they aren't whoring out the engine either, it's only available for Bethesda games.

About the Quake name, what should they call it? We've got Quake, Doom, Heretic and Hexen of which are four scary names but theres so many scary names and the majority of them have probably been used millions of times before. Perhaps make a Heretic/Hexen sequel that has nothing to do with the original Hexen/Heretic series and make it retailed to be fuckin' badass? I think we've all forgotten about Hexen and Heretic.

I will never forget playing Hexen co-op on the 64. That was a console shooter I could get used to.

- Air control
- Tweak guns slightly (for example, use Q4 plasma, etc)
- "friends" system like SC
- LAN client, let people run their own servers
- Enough competitive features to not warrant a development of a mod from other users
- Develop it for 360, PS3, and PC. Port the PC version to the consoles.
- Story, continue on from Quake 4 (or whatever, didn't follow the story but people eat that shit up)
- Make the game fast. Quakeworld is a great example.
- Let it be open. I want to be able to play anyone, at any time. "Your Skill Isn't Higher" isn't open to everyone.
- You play through an account. That way accounts get banned from servers, not IP's. Want a new account? Buy the game again. Still allow for /name in servers
- Potentially offer it through Steam. Unlikely, but possible.
- Input from other players. EA flew in multiple top CNC players for a week long development for testing and balancing. The same could be done for this.

People would buy a Quake V. Don't let another company ruin it, make it solid on release, and patch it from there. Don't ship without things like brightskins because it will be added later.

Quake V could cater towards everyone. Put in the story to keep casuals happy. Release it on console for people to play it there. Make it competitive and solid for the PC to justify tournaments.

Q4 sold less than a million, so why would any more buy a Q5? The Quake name is tarnished at this point, so it would make more sense to start an entirely new IP in the spirit of Quake.

Other id games are on steam, so there's no reason that it couldn't be. Almost every big game is on steam now, and Valve have even ported it to consoles with Portal 2.

Well they are working on Doom4 Multiplayer pretty hard, at least that's what I heard. So who knows, this game could actually be decent. I just hope it's faster than Doom3 movement. Not as fast as DOOM1 obviously, but you know, a reasonable amount.

I actually started in doom3. There are a few other guys that are pretty decent players in QL (by non-pro standards at the very least) that also started in Doom3. I'm not saying I'm in that list, but I do believe that if they get it right, it could be awesome. The problem is this. It won't have strafejumping or anything comparable, because whatever else they do, it's going to be a console focused port.

Well I remember carmack saying before doom 3, and I think he repeated that \ made it obvious that it is the same situation with doom 4, that it won't have as great of a multiplayer as a quake game. They might make it more interactive, add more weapons, make it all better but if it does anything it will be just making the game good for casuals. And what good is that. I don't see how a doom game could have good competitive MP, the whole thing is just wry from a quaker's standpoint.

irc conversation with ttimo some time ago. the very little info i got at least made me hope that its gonna be playable (idtech 5 uses more of a idtech3 network code approach than idtech4) and not just a small addon to the game like in doom3 (2 separate teams working on sp and mp concurrently) and they might be using some of the stuff they learned from ql with website/stats/ladder and whatnot. I know that tells nothing about gameplay but at least i can hope :P

Sounds good as for the technical\content side goes.

However, I'm can't be optimistic about the gameplay side personally. I mean, what PK\QW to Q4\CPM\WSW, all of these had for weapons and for movement worked because the weapon design & movement create what's needed for a competitive game, more or less, and doom is really not like that.

Quake movement\weapon system doesn't work for SP, Doom system doesn't work for MP.

So if they do create a good popular game, my opinion is that it could only only be the artistic side that's somewhat reminiscent of quake, and gameplay wise it'd be a lot more like halo\tf2\whatever :S

What was wrong with doom 1/2 movement? If anything, I'd say that doom 2 style MP would be the absolute best thing that could happen to a new doom game.

Not only is the doom 2 movement lots of fun, it could even be done on a controller. It's newb friendly, but there's still some wiggle room for skill.

There are some weird phenomenon where players play these fast DLC\ XBL\ Steam miningames. But what AAA titles with that fast of a gameplay do you know that became popular? I'm not even talking about a multiplayer scene here.

I don't think that it's necessarily the speed of the game. Gameplay will always be the defining factor.

I'd sure hope so, but for me it's hard to imagine a random gamer playing a fast paced game when all he's seen are games that are, movement wise, three times slower.

I'm not ruling it out, but I'd like to see some form of advanced movement. Who knows, maybe D1/D2 movement could work really well.

Have you played a lot of modern Doom 2? There is still some skill to using it, especially with how fast you have to react. The maps can make a lot of difference, as you have to be able to prepare for turns.

Played a bit, but definitely not enough to realize the potential of the movement. I'd be fine with movement like that.

Even though the execution of the movement is really easy (basically just move diagonally), handling the speed gives it some skill. I believe they said that one of the players in that video uses 5cm/360.

I always thought the idea of the D3 multiplayer was kinda cool. Like really slow gameplay hiding in dark corners with the flashlights. Of course they tried to turn it into a pro-game instead of a fun-game. The idea of trying to replace D3 with Q3 was laughable.

How is that "only worry" not guaranteed to happen? I could see competitions using a little different game (wouldn't really make sense to go air control & have different weapons though. Quake 3/4/Live arsenal is about perfect for MP, for SP they could add some weps that wouldn't be in MP; but that's not the point) but unless I've missed something (I have to admit I haven't been following the SP scene) the genre is just dead. Nobody will care.

IMO, if the SP was doom 3-like, slow and weapons would be tactile, heavy-feeling somebody could buy that. But that's just doom, like focus said. And I don't see how that would make a good MP game.

Again, go back to the roots with Quake 1/Nehahra style singleplayer, but with a bit of a modern touch as far as interaction and story. It doesn't need to be as personal as an RPG, or even as far as Doom 3/Quake 4, but more like the almost spectator feeling of HL2.

IMO, jumps, weapons and gameplay must be slow and heavy, and splash shouldn't be able to throw enemies\players around for a accepted SP game. That is, basically, against what Quake 1 is. And not a good MP game in any way.

Nehahra was a full length movie + mod for Quake 1. You can watch the movie here, and the mod shouldn't be too hard to track down.

Quake 1 didn't have an issue with things like knockback and such, since monsters were merely immune to it. There are plenty of ways to mold the singleplayer around the gameplay, rather than the gameplay around singleplayer.

Sure, but then a player enters multiplayer (which should be basically made as a separate and a costly game basically), the game feels extremely bouncy\arcadish, his opponents are hopping around like bunnies and they hit like crazy too. Ladders could make sure that his enemies are his skill level, but to get better is to accept these "hacks" and start doing them. I mean, what percent of people played multiplayer on q4, d3, ut3?

Plus, there's this thing these players like, it's the items. The many different spells, weapons and other crap that we have in starcraft, dota and all the other games. They can't really be on a pure, simplistic, fast FPS. A popular FPS has to be, optimally, bloated, arbitrary and limiting as the battlefield series.

Then there's the many weapons problem. You can't let players have any more than 4 different, and 2 actually usable weapons at the same time. It's too complex for the little heads of the average gamers.

So with these in mind, and after adding linear, 2d maps, really teambased gameplay and retarded vehicles you just get another Battlefield. Or a tf2\Halo, at best.

I think a much better option would be QL developed correctly, as players wouldn't be so serious going into it (a arcade game? kk), many more people could try it and the rare people that are able to compete in games like that would stay. But it's too late now.

It's kind of incredible thinking about it, all of us here are crazy about these games but any outsider doesn't even understand why would anyone play a "unrealistic" game, let alone a fast one. I remember fatal1ty recently stating in an interview that one day players will realize that they need a higher skillcap in FPS games and start playing hardcore FPSes. i wish I believed any of that.

I personally favor Painkiller or Doom 2 style movement, but QW was extremely popular for its time - it didn't have any issue with the transition.

Q4 didn't sell well, so you couldn't expect much. Doom 3 had all sorts of MP problems - 2gb demos, 4 players max in server, horrible netcode, etc.. It had shit multiplayer anyway, but these things certainly didn't help. It was obviously a singleplayer game that just had a multiplayer option.

The devs of UT3 said that they had more players than it seemed, but that the majority of players seem to play against offline bots. I believe that any multiplayer game that wants to succeed needs absolutely zero bot support. If you want to cater to the carebear types, add cooperative modes.

If players can handle the units in a game like SC2, they can handle 6-10 weapons. Realism isn't the reason that games are popular - it's that they cater to the userbase so well because of earlier successes. We don't want to market the game as "YOU NEED TO BE THIS 1337 TO PLAY", but rather "THIS GAME IS FUN TO PLAY". If the game is enjoyable enough, players will come to competition on their own.

As for co-op, I believe it'd be better if some (or most or even all) of the SP content was available for it, rather than specific levels designed for it, so as to not to interfere with MP's popularity too much. I could imagine most players just going co-op until they get bored if it's like that. Especially since they prefer to NOT play against their friends.

For the movement and weapons - honestly, I don't know. I wish you were right and would love nothing more than to be proven wrong in this topic. I don't think there's a high chance for any of the future DM games though. We don't have too many shots and it's an uphill battle for all of them. I don't think you can say that if they can handle sc, they can handle multiple weapons. Sc is too different of a game. In fact, in these kind of games they want MORE of details to learn, and while in FPSes they have to be gimicky, not basic kind of weapons, in RTS games they can have an impact on every game and they won't complain.

I guess there has to be enough gimmicky crap in the game, but at the same time it has to somehow retain it's core value enough for the hardcore. Since I believe most of the deviation from q3/qw/cpm etc is bad for it, it's hard for me to imagine that would be "enjoyable enough" and fitting for competitive play.

I'd like to see ALL the SP content open to co-op, and additional creative co-op maps/modes like UT invasion.

UT has more weapons than Quake, and each weapon even has a secondary function - yet it still won out on copies sold/players. The point I was trying to make with SC2 was that it is a considerably fast game, it has a lot of things that you have to handle/use, and it still sold millions of copies. I don't see things like the number of weapons having any impact on the game.

There's always going to be more people who enjoy checkers over chess, so we're essentially looking for Go. The complexity/depth of the game should come from emergent gameplay through players, more than through the platform.

Well as for the UT weapons, they're not all functional as "core" weapons, they're more like secondary gimmicky crap. Which IS supposed to give the sales a boost rather than take it.

The difference between them and the quake weapons is that in quake, you have a much better sense of what weapon is for what, while in UT it's much more like "pick the one you like and go for it". And they're all like toys, many of them have no VERY specific difference in gameplay but they're all there for the newbs to try out. No wonder it helps the sales. It's very different with quake.

I agree with the last part wholeheartedly, unfortunately anything that's to the side of "Go" is a big no-no for the today's gamers.

They had more of an issue in UT2k4, but they were rather good in UT3. I'd say the only "gimmicky sales boost" that they had was vehicles. Vehicles really have no place in an FPS, unless they are mechs.

Well maybe it's better but it could never constitute and argument anyway, it was a huge fail. There's hardly any doubt that even without bots it would've failed, people just don't want to open themselves up for any kind of "game technique abuse" which they feel the DM higher-level gameplay is.

UT3 sold a few million, if I remember right. Q4 didn't even sell 1 million, to give you some scale. The thing is, it has such great support for bots, newbs have no incentive to go online. UT2k4 had the same issue, and I would have thought that they learned their lesson.

The netcode was fairly solid, and the graphics were surprisingly scalable. The gameplay was surprisingly fast-paced in UT3, and the later patches felt pretty good. Competitions had to pick a game, and UT got the short end of the stick. I don't know what the player activity is like right now, but I'm sure it's no worse off than QL - and that's not counting all the players who play offline.

I think they just didn't like the gameplay when paired up against better players. It's the same complaint we get when somebody tries out whichever quake. Doesn't really seem likely that they only wanted to play offline. But the bots were a mistake, that's for sure :)

The "playing offline" bit was actually from an interview with Epic. Even when making offline games with bots, it still sends info to their master server that you did it, and they said that the vast majority of games played were bot games.

As much as bots seemed like a great idea before, I just don't see them as having a place in modern day internet. Valve seems to be keeping with this, as CS/TF2/P2 (technically they recently added bots to TF2, but you can only play like 1 map, and they don't really play well) don't have bots, and games like L4D/2 are a fucking pain to get bots to work in anything other than the normal singleplayer campaign.

Rage isn't like any of the other id properties, and has gotten quite a negative response from gamers so far. It's not just about the name, but the damage that has been done by Q3/Q4/ETQW/QL certainly doesn't help.

I think it was accepted well. I don't understand how you could say that it was anything other than a success. Before CPL dropped it and the community started deteriorating, it was all amazing.

What do you consider a success? Even id considered it a failure. It failed on sales, and the activity could only be envied by a community of our current size. It was never that big, and had been in rapid decline since 2002. CPL only helped to end the competitive scene sooner, but the game itself, and the competition, were already dying.

It was a important game industry-wise; Never before had anyone made a game like that, and thousands of people got to experience competitive play and see it on GTV or whatever.

Not saying it was all worth it though. But it WAS important. If you tell your grandchildren about the history of online games or competitive games, you have to tell them about q3.

I think it was pretty big compared to what we have today. I remember going to netcafes and seeing everyone playing Q3 on lan. Good times. Now all of this is lost. I hate the fact that the only way I can play games is over the internet. I enjoyed going to a place with mates and playing with them, everyone there commenting matches and shit.

I think it also opened the fad of "online only" games, like UT or CS.

Indeed, good idea though. I remember some concepts of the player models - they looked familiar to Quake 4's style but they had these little badges on them, I remember there being a Logitech logo and a CPL logo there and figured that it was for sponsors and would be customizable. Would've been a sick game if it was ever released.

Painkiller had such a unrewarded and unfitting demise and it's still a great game today in my opinion.

Also trust me the counter-strike scene is very stubborn and backwards, both games are elitist and have no sense of skill, it takes mere minutes just to become great at the game all you have to do is find the right people in the right team, and I'm not talking about finding guys you can play with well but guys that are very popular and can get into all sorts of 'amazing' teams. I think PK was pretty good, aside from some netcode/bug issues. Change for the sake of change doesn't help us, but the aversion to change in the FPS communities has been extremely damaging to growth.

I mean, more\easier change from qw and q2 to q3 might've been useful for the game as it was pretty obvious since then that q3 was all for the DM community, but after it's release EVERYBODY should've stuck to it and we'd have been so much better off. I believe you're familiar with the CPL drama, hadn't they dropped quake 3, most tournaments wouldn't have followed and it's be in so much better of a shape right now.

CPL wasn't paying out anyway, so they would have killed it sooner or later no matter what.

Yeah but it still had a great impact for a few years afterwards, and had it been there it wouldn't have been such a hard blow and more other tournaments would've pickup up quake, the community would've been so much stronger altogether. It was about the time when many other tournaments were forming and picking up CPL games I think.

Actually I take it back. Their idea is fairly awful: different modes have different movement systems, probably different weapons, all highly customizable. Nothing but the tech stuff is the same between them. Would only work if the game was a smashing success and the cs community is probably even more stubborn than the quake community, so nobody would switch and it'd be exactly like painkiller if CPL had it. Q1 got it right. Netquake (original pre-QW Q1) multiplayer community still exists and is more active then cpma/vq3 atm. QW of course is still there and going strong.

Q1 single player community is very active too (remember the recent Quake-done-Quickest movie for example) making new models, textures, engines, mission packs etc etc.

Ofc they deserve it by sticking to their game of choice and not jumping on the next OMG-Pro band wagon every year.

The only thing Quake does not need is Quake 5.

The creativity in the FPS market has been on the decline for a long time now. Look at games like Crysis 2. What a buggy piece of shitcake from the proclaimed largest publisher in the world. I actually enjoyed playing games like Homefront because of a thriving online community just like Call of Duty. It might not be the most polished product in the market but I absolutely loved how the SP was "incomplete" and just made the player go through a "part" of the rebellion.

My team often has to test games which involves the publisher picking up small time PC game modders to work on an MP-only project for XBLA etc. Honestly, nothing disgusts me more than to work on such a project because it goes to show exactly how the consumer is taken for granted now because of some shallow shitheads.

I'm not that concerned about the really fast paced death match games dying out, I find it much more worrying that every game these days is just a new reskin of the same watered down crap. Guns with no recoil that take no time to figure out how to use, killstreaks, uav going 24/7 so you know where everyone on the map is all the time, those sort of things. Perks are the pest of games nowadays. If you're bad at something there's no need to get better at it because there's a perk that does that for you!

I've played a lot of the Forgotten Hope 2 mod for BF2 which is really slow paced, vehicles and all that stuff but I really like it because it has a deep strategic layer and a fairly complex squad/teamwork mechanic. I'm looking forward to RO2 coming out soon, so it's not necessarily the fast pace of death match games I enjoy, but the high skill ceiling they leave.

One thing I think is a real shame is how games are all hitscan, and there's no real physics to games anymore. If there's a rocket launcher it will very likely kill you in one hit and not make you go flying over the map :P

The atmosphere and feel is very similar (no surprise seeing as the guy went as far as to bring over Q1 textures), though wrapped around the Doom mechanics and style. You need zdoom or something with similar capabilities to play it.

Even if Q5 becomes Q1 themed, I highly doubt we will see any of that super fast QW style gameplay. You can't play QW with a controller. Unfortunately consoles are where the money is these days. I just hope m/kbs become accepted in the console world some time in the near future.

You could if consoles just developed drivers/support for modern keyboards and mice.

The last console to even try to support keyboards and mice was the Dreamcast. It was so ahead of its time. =/

From what I have heard, the ps3 "supports" the m/kb combo. However, it is up to the developer to utilize m/kb in their game. For instance, UT3 on the ps3 allows for m/kb input. The problem derives from developers unwillingness to use such inputs. Most developers are afraid players foreign to m/kb gameplay will become discouraged when they find themselves getting zero frags and 50 deaths in their first match. So they design their entire game around the controller and purposely exclude m/kb support.

This philosophy isn't new and unfortunately seems to be the standard for the foreseeable future. Perhaps this will change if consoles develop more computing power/applications. Us pc fps gamers are always going to be the minority until then (if that time ever comes).

I'm not sure how well it works on PS3, but the drivers on PS2 were absolutely horrible. Response was shoddy, at best, and there was accel.

..and this is why the FPS genre is utterly fucked, because it will always be divided between PC and console, the latter being artificially crippled by its control scheme

do you feel like they do that? if your top players are able to grab themselves a stick it doesn't mean that the game can be released only playable on it.

well, you obviously can play the game on gamepad (or even keyboard) to the highest level, but since the developers are aware of the arcade culture (because they originate from that market themselves) they encourage people to use arcade sticks if they prefer them

also the nature of controls in fighting games is pretty simple and it would be impossible for someone to make their game playable only on gamepad.. you just need to emulate 4 basic directions and 6 buttons after all

a mouse is infinite times more complex and precise, i guess console FPS is hopelessly fucked without developer support.. and when is that going to happen?

you dont have to code weapons in quakewars, they are 100% scripts outside of the driver, the driver just has a single weapon.cpp with all the code on

the driver runs all the same, the script compiler is in the engine

q43a has the cleanest and best netcode without changing network system code in the engine, everything entity based works and clean code either on server or client

over the internet is no different, you get packet loss, but the engine knows about it, entity netcode is just a few spawn id`s/bools/integers that are synced in a snapshot, for clientside prediction thinking of entities to run and use

code that is not needed to be run on a server will not be run, and vice versa for clients, Q43A has been recoded and script kiddied all around and why there is so many version of bugs and fixes, and all the vanilla stuff that been fixed over the years

Q43A is full of everything that cant be done just because the renderer has some floating point buffer flood or whatever, the power of todays PC`s can make up for

it does give you better FPS, Q43A removes all the lag of memory usage and makes dedicated gameplay like SP, and not all heavy and sluggish. there will be no slowdown on the ingame MP menu, all models are precached when you first join a server, you will never have ingame pause while a model loads
