here's a bit of constructive criticism.

"czm opts to go for the yellow. he decides to do damage at the red... he is low on health... chance does get the mega... czm goes for a rail shot... he hits two rail shots..."

this sort of thing is unnecessary in my eyes (ears hehe). telling us this excessive information that we already know just from looking at the stream is in no way relevant to us. you should rather try focusing on sharing your insights, for example what a player should do to make a comeback, what qualities and weaknesses a player is showing, how one player could/does exploit the other player's playstyle, what specific actions/decisions made the outcome of each fight (weapon selection, positioning etc.), and so on. i would personally prefer a commentating style similar to this; a more analytical type of thing. because we do actually have vision on what the players are doing at all times...

i think you're doing a solid job, and i do appreciate the effort, but if anything, this is what i think you could focus more on.

this is not how play by play is done, even if you see what is happening.

ok, fine, but that's not my point. i just wanted to get across what i'd prefer in terms of commentating styles, that's all. i just made a somewhat extreme example to illustrate what i consider to be irrelevant, at least to me. i assume im not the only one who'd prefer focus on a more analytical aproach, for example the type of insights rapha has to offer when he's on the stream. although it's pretty much impossible to top his perspectives on this and that and what not and so on and so forth.

imo only rapha and maybe a couple of others can do that

im not sure if u really want absolutely no play by play at all. personally i agree with you in the sense that i want to be more analytical and less play by play but what i want to do is to relate whats happening on screen and THEN analyze. for me right now i think the focus is mostly on phrasing things correctly, in a way that lets me lead from the play to the analysis. for instance, in what you quoted, what i was aiming for was something like - "czm, having picked the yellow up decides to try and do some damage on red, however now hes too low on health to push for the mega. but czm brings himself back to even stacks with the two critical rail shots". i think if i can get that sort of concise phrasing for the play by play itll be much easier to get the analysis in there.

but no i dont want to pretend like im rapha and do pure analysis. i probably could try to do it if i put some effort in cos the analysis pops through my head most of the time but i doubt my mouth could keep up :).

anyway im not that worried. this is like my 2nd or 3rd week casting and already ive had to cast with like 5 or 6 separate partners. all the way from fishstix to rapha. thats a broad spectrum in terms of quake knowledge so its pretty hard to find an identity as either a play by play or an analyst sort of caster. lets see if there are more events to cast in north america.

thanks for the comments tho. its strange before taking up casting i wouldve said the exact same thing. :). maybe theres a lesson in there.

only watched 2-3 matches but i enjoyed your commentary so far and i am sure it will improve over time.

one thing i would like to add, make sure the analytic commentary does not take away the excitement of crazy shots and impressive frags. as good as 2gds commentary is for example, he sometimes simply keeps on talking, in a calm voice about something he observed, while the craziest things are happening. its really hard to feel excited for something when the commentator acts like nothing has happened.

Totally agreed. I wonder many times if commentators are closing eyes for a moment or anything else, when some insane shot happens or ridiculous battle 2-3 secs long takes place and they are like 'yeah, nothing interesting is happening right now, i'll keep analyzing' :D

I only watched czm vs chance. Don't know if u were casting, but I was impressed. Definitely the best casting that I have heard from an american caster. I don’t even think that u need to change something. There was no bushtit in ur cast and that is very rare. The so called analytical cast, when isn’t done by a pro player, is 95% bullshit.

Personally, pros included, I remember listening something useful and clever only once, when 2gd first described Cypher’s ability to do max damage between fights in situations u don’t expect him to.

From an entertainment aspect, you might be right. I do stress might, as we don't know what form the participants are in. So it could be a long tournament with a lot of nothing going on. Double elimination takes time, and it seems like not everyone is willing to sacrifice the time for single elimination, so I can't imagine double elimination bringing added (FUN) to the mix.

As far as the outcome, it will be what it is unless you didn't have a clear number 1 player and a clear number 2 player.

CSN is trying to provide a tournament that fits with the players schedule, and sometimes that requires some sacrifices from everyone. We as spectators complain about everything, so it really doesn't matter in the long run. If CSN were to just move on without the top players, then we would complain about that.

But when you think about it, quake is not doing that bad for what it is. Quake generates a different attitude and mindset in people, so it won't be taken as you would say "serious". We use words like rape, hate, nigger, fag, ho (just the English terms) among other things. So it's very hard to take it too serious, when those terms are used to describe players/plays.

When I'm playing it's almost as a tension reliever, I'm in a world where those things are allowed. And as we both know, that shouldn't be taken seriously. ;)

yea i think the grand final went quite well. finally managed to work out a rhythm with sparks. sort of feel like i made up for the rest of the night with the final game really. think i got angry at some of the shit that was going on on the side and lost focus for the first few games. ended up once again talking too much and messing up some stream stuff.

o well. its been a pleasure casting/streaming. i guess ill go back and watch the vods later on and figure out what i did wrong and maybe do things differently next time around if there are more events to cast on the american side.

The casting was very good. You have the perfect voice, Wonka, and your ability to speak without interruptions is a great gift. Although, some people have noted that the constant speaking can be a little daunting at times, I think that should be easy to change. Personally, I feel this only maybe a couple of times during a, say two hour, cast. The fact that you have casted only for such a short time amazes me, and I hope to hear another event with you casting!
