Widescreen HUD version kinda looks normal actually. Probably just me.

well i am sure you can get used to it, but whats happening here is that they just stretch the 4:3 elemets to whatever ratio you have and that makes for distored items/text.
but well some people are more sensitive to this then other i guess, i never understood people who would stretch a movie to have no black areas on the screen aswell while some of my friends claimed they dont even notice it.

just look at how thin the horizontal line at the crosshair is compared to the vertical

i share your thoughts on this, and what's weird is that the quake engine is set to stretch the design when switching aspect ratio, and one would really think this should have been fixed as the majority of PC monitors are now at 16:10 or 16:9.

let's have id fix it for the next update.

Well def crosshairs are fixed and that was the biggest complaint, it does look like shit though.

Biggest annoyance was the things they made specially narrow so they look right on WS though.

afaik you're doing something wrong, this has been fixed for a while now? my crosshairs don't look like the one you posted.

I also think this issue was solved reasonably early on in QL; it kept everything in proportion with regards to the hud, and for the same fov your view was adjusted accordingly so nothing was stretched in that way either.

As in you could take a widescreen screenshot, crop it to 4:3 and it would then look exactly the same as its closest 4:3 resolution counterpart.

All hud elements stayed within the 4:3 portion of the screen, maintaining the aspect ratio of the 640*480 'box' the hud elements are positioned on.

As far as I know, at least :(

Is your r_mode the same as the resolution (if) you are enforcing one through the graphics cards drivers, nukm? This could be 'streching' the display. My guess would be something like this is causing your problems.

yup, looks fine here too. QL doesn't behave like Q3/CPMA

the problem is probably the fact that you have a custom crosshair and custom hud designed for a 4:3 resolution.......

official quake live crosshairs and hud's look fine in widescreen

yeah the ql crosshair itself is fine its just the hud stuff i used to enhance it :/

it's been fixed eons ago for native ql elements, edit your hud and crosshair.

On the other hand, huds designed for 16/10 are pretty funky in 4/3, I remember trying either memento mori or tbone's hud and it was like trying to aim between bricks ( life/clock/ammo )

So, how do the default huds compensate for the two aspect ratios?

Are there two files and the relevant one is called for each aspect ratio, or is there just one file with every hud element duplicated and a showcvar test for what r_mode is?

That could get around the problem; make the hud for one aspect ratio, then calculate the changes to adapt the sizes for the other aspect ratio(s).

One hud could fit all then :)

You can fix it yourself if you're not a lazy fuck - Just adjust the sizing of elements which annoy you in your HUD.

whats up with the attitude? well probably annoyed cause you have heard this quite often considering how active you are when it comes to hud work but still...

also i can fix stuff like this (should be the size of that box)



and although i can certainly work a bit on the custom lines for the crosshair its a lot of trial and error to work out the numbers to get symmetrical results and you can really argue if it should take the user that much effort
