Yeah, he doesn't go apeshit with convoluted descriptions and organizes the chapters a bit better. His dialogues don't seem as interesting, on the flipside.
Pretty much nailed it there...comparing the pro's and con's of both, I'll take Sanderson. Though I have thoroughly enjoyed every novel in this series, but I think The Gathering Storm is my second favorite to the eye of the World.
what utter rot. sanderson's style actually ruined the whole experience for me. its not fit for the wot series. i LIKED the convoluted explanations and setups. on the other hand sanderson's own books are pretty good tho.
I never noticed a huge difference between the books honestly other than the way they write some dialogues and the way they would describe situations. Honestly, when Jordan would write half a page about the way some bitches dress fit I would nearly put the book down, which is something I've yet to encounter in Sanderson's writing. In my personal opinion, he's doing an amazing job given his circumstances...Jordan was a phenomenal author in some aspects, but I think I liked his series for reasons other than why he became a bestseller. He seriously put me to sleep a few times, something Sanderson has yet to do in any of his novels I have read. Jordan may be superior in writing dialogue from what I've read of either author, but I don't read fantasy for well written dialogue.
Well said, my sentiments exactly. Matter of taste i suppose, but Jordan's obsession with details really started to wear me down around halfway of each book. That and the way he was all over the place with chapters. The thing is, it's the setting itself and characters and the way the interact with each other that made me stick with the books, and Sanderson left all that stuff intact, so i can't say a change in writing style made a huge difference for me personally, other than eliminated two annoying elements.
I doubt, if he'd rewrote the books all the way from the first one, his style would stand up to Jordan's - the ridiculously long descriptions, exposition and style of writing help immensely in drawing in the reader and making him stick with the books. It does get tedious after a while, nothing a short breather can't fix, though. But for writing what seems to be the final trilogy of books in the series, Sanderson's more simple and straightforward style goes a long way to close things out and tie all the loose ends together.
I'm halfway through Towers of Midnight atm, and i'm enjoying the shit out of it, same as i enjoyed The Gathering Storm. Only thing i'm sad/angry about is that i'm near finishing this great series. The amount of time i invested in reading all those books, the characters and setting seem like old friends, and i hate to say goodbye to them. :/
I know what you mean dude, as much as I'm looking forward to the last novel, I am almost sad that it's finally almost here. I read the Eye of the World when I was 12, and at that point it was the most entertaining book I had ever read, and is still in my top 5. Now here I am, about to be 23, and the series is nearly over...I've read through every book at least twice now except for the Towers of Midnight, which I will most definitely read again before reading the last book.
I've never thought the series to be the most well written or thought provoking that I have read, but it certainly tops my list of favorite fiction/fantasy series. The world Jordan created is nothing less than phenomenal, and every other fantasy book or series I've read I always find myself comparing to the WoT. I sincerely hope Sanderson can somehow continue writing the series, or at least continue writing in the realm Jordan created. I think there's certainly plenty of room for an endless continuation after the final book in the WoT, especially considering what happened in Towers of Midnight. On a side note, I know Universal bought the movie rights, and I believe someone else has video game rights who are possibly creating an MMORPG as we speak.
Yeah, season 1 is really good, not liking season 2 so far..
From what I've heard the US version is good too, probably gonna watch a few episodes to compare :)
I don't see how they can really carry on at this point. Additionally, the actress that plays Cuddy didn't renew her contract - even if they do make another season, they'd have to do it without her.
Shows still on:
1. Game of Thrones
2. True Blood
3. Entourage
4. Breaking Bad
5. Sons of Anarchy
6. Dexter
7. Boardwalk Empire
8. The Walking Dead
9. How I met your mother
10. Modern Family
Shows not still on:
1. Sopranos
2. Lost
3. Deadwood
Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy and Boardwalk Empire sound good. I saw the first season of Dexter, was nice, but I don't think I wanna watch another one. Also saw the first of Sopranos, how do the later ones compare?
Soon, Charlie is drawn into a conflict that involves these two universes and one other pacifist universe (gammaverse) with unsuspected terror at its heart.
I've been meaning to watch Twin Peaks since middle school. :@ Also, what's Carnivale like? Ben also finds himself disturbed by cryptic and prophetic dreams doesn't really sound like something up my alley. c:
The Wire I will check out; saw the trailer for The Walking Dead and wasn't interested. Maybe too much zombie stuff in cinema nowadays. Homicide looks like a normal cop drama sort of thing and Kingdom Hospital like a normal horror sort of thing (:@), are they really good or just ok?
close second (for me) is six feet under
carnivale is also one of my faves, its about nomadic circus during the dust bowl period, weird and interesting characters + a little mysterious main plot, great cinematography and also costly, which was the reason it was cancelled in the end :( but its got some closure at least
Riget/kingdom hospital is kinda interesting but in my case it didnt live up to the hype ive heard about it
I'd still recommend giving it a shot for two or three episodes at least; there is a good plot and it's an entertaining watch. A revolution is literally coming within the show ;)
I watched three seasons of Mad Men before I realized how fucking boring it was. Breaking Bad better be good, I don't get why they need over a year between series though.
It's pretty great. I'm a little distracted by the pacing, but having read the books first, i guess that's normal, stuff usually happens much quicker in shows and series. I'm also not too convinced about the actor that plays Jon, i always imagined him to be a fair bit more... rough around the edges, dunno. He looks like a pampered wimp here. Eh. They pretty much nailed the rest, especially that smug asshole Jaime and his cuntish but goodhearted bro Tyrion so fuck it.
the event is decent, alien race co exist on planet earth for years, so on and so on, missed the last episode after they teleported their whole planet to earth orbit because their sun is going to super nova
story line is rushed, and probaly end after season 3
game of thrones will be the best show u watch, when it develops more, according to the way the books are. So just wait.. there is tons of fighting and action and plot to come

I haven't seen Monster, but I know it is very good. I just don't think I can hang with the 74 episodes.
Eureka 7 was good. R.O.D. was alright.
D-grayman sucks! You crazy :-)
Kekkaishi I couldn't hang with, after a bit it just reminded me too much of Inuyasha, which always felt a bit juvenile to me.
Blood the Last Vampire was just a very short film that Blood+ was based on. I really enjoyed Blood+, even though so many episodes and some of the characters were garbage. Kai was one of the winiest and most worthless characters ever.
I haven't seen most of those others you mentioned.
[This is Alister Crowley. His back story is that he lived in a village alone where everyone thought he was creepy and murderous because of how he looked so he was all alone, he fell in love with an AKUMA pretending to be a human, the AKUMA is a monster that is created to kill people and take souls. His ability is to drink AKUMAs blood which he can harness to become exceptionally strong. The AKUMA, Eliade is killed by his own hand when she reveals her true nature, even though he really loved her. He becomes an exorcist to destroy all AKUMA, and protect the humans that trust him like Allen Walker]
This is Alister Crowley vs one of Noahs Family (the evil guys)
He is basically a 'vampire' that drinks the blood of the Akuma to get his powers recharged, drinking too much of it however, poisons himself and he will die, so he is gambling on beating this enemy before he kills himself.
I really like characters so my mangas/anime that i like always have great characters. Reading manga is much quicker, no fillers and the story is faster and easier to get into. Also, you can't say FLCL is one of the best if u haven't seen that many anime/mangas.. i've checked ur anidb list, it isn't that much.
I would check out these manga b/c they are really nice:
MX0
Bloody Monday
Battle Royale
Blade of the immortal
Zetman
Cage of Eden
Ubel Blatt
Berserk
For a start..
Like what? There's true blood which is pretty good and then nothing else that even remotely looks watchable... dunno how anybody could be 'sick' of them
No archer or Always Sunny love? Strictly comedies, sports, and science/history nerd stuff for me. I swore myself off tv dramas after the last episode of the Sopranos. Nice job laying down the pompous artist card on the last episode David Chase. Thanks.
well, from the shows that are running, i must say i like the killing slightly more than game of thrones at the moment.. largely due to the atmosphere and cinematography.. (im also reading got)
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Justified yet. Where is the Timothy Olyphant love? Was the Hitman movie really that bad? Well I suppose it was but I mean Deadwood was good.
Another great show is The Riches, they only made two seasons unfortunately but so far the first one is awesome. I will post a bigger list later but lastly, Hyperdrive. You either love or hate those kind of British comedies, I love it. No laughter track is a must for me.
i recently watched both seasons of justified because i was looking for some show to kill time during exam period and i like olyphant.. when the main plot picks up the pace, it becomes really fun, cool hillbilly characters and accents, olyphants witty remarks + boyd..
I feel it had too much human drama and not enough exploration, maybe it was too dark to be mainstream. I still liked it, it has good characters and casting, but I would have liked to see some more aliens in a Stargate show.
Watched (or rewatched) and enjoyed by me in the past year or so:
Srs:
Breaking Bad
Game of Thrones
Comedies:
Archer
Arrested Development
Frisky Dingo (and the two X-tacles pilots)
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
South Park
Trailer Park Boys (wtf everyone forgot it?)
Venture Bros
All these shows get a tem-dorsement of between $$$ and $$$$$$
I've also watched some other tv shows which were less awesome (like parks and recreation, simpsons new eps, futurama new eps, but the first one seemed bland while other two don't have the brilliance of earlier seasons unlike south park which even though changed, has kept some raw elements*
* I heard liam likes the Futurama episode with the dog and appreciates when people mention it due to his fondness towards it. A gentle giant c:
I must admit, being a fan of the books, the casting for the show has been terrific. I can see in future when I read the books again that I will be imagining the characters in the show (SOME of them - like Arya, Tyrion, Drogo, Viserys, Littlefinger!)
I'm actually impressed that so many people think the TV show is good. Although I am enjoying the show I watch it and fear that it may inaccessible to people that haven't read the books. I'm glad to see that's not the case.
My only gripe is that 10 episodes is too few, about 13 to 15 would have allowed better pacing, when I'm watching it feels like a lot of it is rushed and they skip scenes (but not too many thankfully) Of course, maybe the later seasons will have more episodes, this will give GRRM more time to write another book too!
Man, just thinking about how awesome everything is about to come, honestly the first book is still standard fantasy and just setting everything up, at the end of the series you're going to shit bricks.
I also hope that they can figure out how to do some stuff, like the huge sea battle between like 40 ships in book 2. (With Byzantine Fire!)
yet they're key moments in the book and rather defining point of Robb, and later on Tyrion and lots of others. In fact, half the reason his 'clan' give him so much respect is the valour he shown in the battle they have just 100% cut out.
I gotta read the books. I just don't wanna spoil the TV experince because whole whole setting is so visual beautiful. On the other hand I can't stand waiting a week for the new episode, and on top of that the first season is about to end afaik.
dumb show is dumb. you guys are fucking losers. omg a tv show on a network channel its GOOOOD. u fgts will gulp this shit down like a over the hill prostitute with no teeth.
I was told by a friend this was an amazing show but frankly I really don't see what the fuss is about. I've watched all nine episodes and so far I've found it average. The acting is so-so, with a LOT of actors constantly overplaying/being too dramatic - i.e. those who play Catelyn Stark, Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow + to a lesser extent those who play Eddard Stark himself, Cersei Lannister, Viserys Targaryen, Sansa Stark and Bran Stark. In fact, the only actors I think are doing a good job so far are those playing Barristan Selmy and Ser Jorah Mormont, and to a lesser extent Petyr Baelish. Tyrion Lannister is also played pretty well although the character is rather typical. To be honest, pretty much all the characters are one-dimensional. The scenario isn't anything special and rather predictable, the political intrigues are extremely basic... I also think the pace is too slow - I know those who've read the books will disagree but that's precisely because you've read the books.
I really hope it picks up steam after the first season.
I haven't actually watched any of it, just read the books. I usually wait for series to get like 3+ seasons or get finished then watch that show constantly till the end. I do this with major shows like The wire/ shield /24 etc.
I don't watch tv usually so i don't see spoilers, so when i watch a good show from start to end in a few days, i jizz like a motherfucker.
That being said, the books have lots of different plots that are very interesting and a lot of twists and really nice developments for nearly all the characters.
If the show is sucky, then they fucked it up. Really. Just get the books.
I do not understand the wank fest over the acting in this show
it isn't bad by any means, but it is contrived. What I find disturbing are the perverts jerking off over Arya, seriously it's average at best and she's like 10 you twisted fucks.
the books aren't _that_ grand either. I really enjoyed them and I am looking forward the next instalments but I wish the idiot blind fans would shut the hell up. Take away GRRM's killing of 'main characters (there are no main characters, it's about the civilisation and its story as a whole) and you're not left with that much worth raving over.
I'm with you on the acting. It's super melodramatic at times. It's warranted sometimes with the brutal nature of the times and what's happening, but a lot of the time they REALLY overdo it, and that bothers me. It's not bad acting, just really overselling it, which I'd rather see than some guy/gal/kid who can't act their way out of a paper bag. Overall the acting's fine, nothing to write home about, but certainly not bad by any means.
I actually agree, I'm watching it purely because 1h a week is not too much wasted time and I find it watchable (do note that I'm incapable of watching most series though, recently I've only managed to watch Spartacus (well cheesy but the plot wasn't that bad in the end) and Rome (not too bad overall)).
But frankly I can't call it amazing and I am kind of bored when watching it, haven't read the books but I'm not going to, got far too many things to read already anyway.
Saying that the characters are one dimensional, the plot is predictable, and the political intrigue is extremely simple etc. is so incredibly stupid that not even "being born in belgium" is good enough to excuse for that.
wow, you spotted some idiot who's not capable of getting the same impression you do. so if he "gets smart" and agrees with your oppinion, you'll actually switch sides and say dumb stuff, or will you focus your hate on him in reply, or do you think you can handle it?
Do you realize how ridiculous a statement that is? :p I didn't even say I hated the series, I said that I found it average and that I didn't really understand what was supposed to be amazing about it. I gave several reasons to explain why I felt that way, you're free to disagree but I think it's quite stupid to call me an idiot for having a different opinion than you. If you want examples of series I enjoy more, there's The Wire in the Drama/Thriller category and The Office (both versions, although in the American one seasons 2-3 are the best) in the Comedy category. Parks & Recreation is also pretty funny.
fuck the acting, its decent and that's enough.
the production value is through the rood tho, for a tv show atleast.
most non-hbo/showtime series make me cringe because the production is so bad. and tho the pay-tv series often have a very high production-values( for example dexter, californication, weeds and so on), this one raises the bar.
It's slow for a reason. First of all, there are a lot of narrative threads going on that they're tying together. So it has to jump around a lot and little by little show what's going on with all the different characters and their respective subplots, so naturally it just takes longer to tell as the story has much more going on than typical trash television. Secondly, the story is brilliantly paced to make you give a shit about the characters. You have to spend enough time with characters, getting to know them, to care about what happens to them when things finally come to a head (like this past episode from Sunday-wow). If you rush it, you don't develop the characters properly and then when the twists and turns start flying around, you really don't care. It's about making you feel attached to (or generally having an opinion on) the characters in the show so that the events following have some sort of impact/consequence for the viewers, to keep them interested and watching. 24/7 bloodbath is fine for a 1.5-2 hour film, but for an ongoing series, things have to be paced slower for character development in order to maintain interest and make the events that unfold REALLY have an impact on the viewers. That's just how television writing works best. The best shows generally follow a slower pace (see: Breaking Bad). You should probably stick to predictable, linear television with cardboard characters and constant action if you think it's so slow. It's building to a season climax. And there's a lot going on, there's a lot to tell. It's really well-written, and very entertaining. You should probably stick to Burn Notice or something like that. Might be more your speed. :)
Lol, that's not the war, it was just a skirmish, the real war is still coming. And actually they've pretty much covered the first book, the next big thing happens to Daenyes and then the book ends on a wtf note.
He's always been good but maybe not gotten the best of roles, although the "Station Agent" was decent. But in Game of Thrones he just owns every scene he's in.
The thing that annoyed me from watching a few episodes of this was the exposition. It's so clunky. Half the scenes are one guy talking to another guy, 'reminding' him about a bunch of stuff he already knows for our 'benefit'. For me it gets really old and predictable. "You have a son your majesty, your son's name is blablabla your majesty, hey remember that time last year where yadayada happened? I know you do, but I'll go over it anyway!"
Well I watched the 4th episode and I'm pleased to see they eased off on the constant lore and are taking a slightly slower pace developing the characters. It looks good so far.
As for Inception I only saw it once, but when I watch it again I will probably notice it as well now that you mentioned it. :O
Ye I was really looking forward to it too, tried hard to like it. Just didn't see any point to it... characters spent the whole movie explaining the mechanics of it and nothing noteworthy happened at all
Shit you're right it was actually a really deep movie and the only reason I didn't like it earlier is because I just didn't get it. If there's a hidden meaning in a movie no matter how small that makes it good because it's hidden you see doesn't matter if it's a bunch of boring shit so long as there's a hidden meaning. Cinematography.
inception seemed pretty awesome and definitely had interesting philosophical themes. that said, I only watched the first 30 minutes and I was pretty high, but chill the fuck out. it's just a movie.
well, if I have to give examples then I'd assume that means you either missed something I didn't, or I'm reading too much into my own interpretation of the film. neither of these things are necessarily bad, but if it's the former, I don't think I'd really do well to elucidate on the matter--that's something you'd need to discover for yourself. nevertheless, I can try.
that said, it's been over half a year since I watched it now probably, but I recall some interesting ideas on what makes consciousness or reality in the little bit I watched. it was also incredibly creative, with the cityscape deforming into odd shapes. I was pretty impressed with the vision. it may seem simple to most, but that kind of thinking is only trivial when you're unaware of the process involved in having such images and bringing them to life. it made me question what reality is.
inception was awful. just because it is (was) new and popular doesn't make it a genuinely good. I especially hate it when film kiddies that watch a film, say it's good, even though they've never seen genuinely good films like the discreet charm of the bourgeoisie or even fucking citizen kane.
i don't understand why people are drawn to movies that are dark (not even nior), full of narcissistic characters, and without any real-world meaning. everything about this is trite; take a couple of scenes from the dark knight and put it in inception - you wouldn't even notice the difference.
What annoys me to no end is people that say a movie is great when they have no clue about films - they don't know enough or have seen enough. It is one thing to say that a movie is good and another to say that they enjoyed it.
Anything to do with art is of-course subject to opinion. Someone might think shit-smeared cock drawings on a bathroom wall is thoughtful and artistic; but if they haven't seen View of Delft (Vermeer), they don't know what they’re talking about (Similarly, Inception vs. Citizen Kane - incomparable).
And what makes you believe with such certainty that all of the people who enjoyed it (or called it good) have no clue about films ("films kiddies" as you said)?
"genuinely good" yeah right, you may as well have said "I'm genuinely superior to you lot, just because I think so"
I meant a specific example rather than "there's some shit in there about reality yo" but kinda pointless asking you since if I understand correctly you've never seen the entire movie
I found all those ideas in the movie to be old ground, and none of it even presented interestingly, the only thing I thought was cool was the concept of someone training their subconscious to attack intruders (but psychonauts had the idea first :>)
if it means anything to you I'll mark this comment and come back to it whenever I finally get around to finishing the movie. it's been a long time since I watched it and being that I was pretty fucked up, I scarcely remember what was so awesome about it anyway.
of course I don't consider it a very "artsy" film overall and it didn't have anything original to say (that's nigh impossible for anyone), but it was cool as fuck.
You saw the good/interesting part of the film though, it seems like its going to be really good at 30 mins in, but it degenerates into a standard action film, with a bit of a twist.
I came out of the cinema a bit disappointed, I felt like they had some nice ideas, but they didn't really use them to their full potential, and the rest of the film is just filled with standard action and pretty boring dialogue.
Its not a terrible film, but I think you will see what I mean at the end.
Leonardo DiCaprio starred in a better "mind" film called Shutter Island, imo. I think it executes its idea a lot better than Inception. Also its got re-watch value :)
Since the first series has come to a conclusion I'd have to say that The Shadow Line is one of the most brilliant series I have ever seen, without a doubt.
Hustle (british show)
-5 conmen hustle bitches, very good cons and characters
Leverage
- 1 theif/1grifter / 1 hacker /1 mastermind / 1 'bodyguard' con people
- like hustle but superpowered individuals -> the thief is the best thief in the world, the hacker is the best in the world etc
The Mentalist
-A guy who used to pose as a con man (fake psychic) hunts down a serial killer that killed his family by working with the CBI.
- He uses various traps and cons to catch the criminals he encounters
White Collar
- A master of white collar crimes, fakes art and swindles money from people is caught and now works for the FBI
- think of the end of 'Catch me if you can' where Leonardo Dicaprio is working with the fed who caught him
- some good plots, some hilarious stuff
Supernatural
- Monsters,demons,angels etc
- Like buffy/angel but way better and has actual scary/gory shit
- hilarious characters
There's so little good fantasy movies/shows GoT seems like a blessing. Love the show and even bought the 4book box-set. I am in the middle of the first only though. I wish somebody would make the first law trilogy in to tv series hngggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Falling Skies.. dunno, average on the first episode. Can go either way, probably gonna fail though. Just like The Event, which had a great setup and failed so hard.
Thank you for every other informative blog. The place else may just I get that type of info written in such a perfect means? I've a project that I'm just now working on, and I have been at the glance out for such information. cdddedfdegbg
