BT usually take around 1-2 weeks to get your phone line 'on' and then of course you have to wait another 1-2 weeks for broadband to be activated. The fastest I've ever been activated was about 5 days on a new line and last time I needed to order a BT phone line it took 12 days.
As for setting it up, you just ring BT up and providing you already have a line going into the property they will tell you the number you will be given, when it will become active and set up payment. Once the line is active you put an order through to whichever ISP you choose and give them your address and phone line number and that's it. I don't know what the procedure is if you don't have a phone line connected to your property though.

Does BT take a week JUST to activate the line? If I don't have a line I can expect weeks of waiting...

regarding the speed of your line, you could have 1000000000mbps but if you have jitter, like a load of ppl on virgin have had in the recent past then youre warping like a mofo

It depends - I used to have the fibre optic which was awesome, no lag great download speeds & never cut on me. Moved to a new place which only had the landline option available at it's the worst internet I've ever had. Randomly drops for no apparent reason, lags to hell & occasionally struggles to stream simple things like youtube vids. You can forget about watching levelup in any decent quality too.

If it's fibre optic go for it - cheap and you don't need a landline. If not search around for cheaper deals.

Yep - also means you don't need to pay an additional fee for a landline. The fibre optic was very good in my experience.

It was already setup in the house though & we just needed to activate so I'm not sure what installation is like.

To my knowledge, this isn't FTTH (fiber to the home). It uses coaxial cable giving you big ping fluctuations and this is what make you warp badly.

Sometimes it's good sometimes it's bad. There have been points where my friend a few roads away has been getting like 14ping and 0 jitter on pingtest and then theres me with 80ping 50 jitter and 5% packet loss. As long as you don't get an over subscribed UBR you'll be alright.

For the last few weeks my internet has been fine for games, but today i've been getting a tiny bit of packet loss and a higher ping and you can feel it :S (I live in Brighton)

My ping with Virgin used to be terrible (20-100 ping range, in-game warping etc). However, since they upgraded my upload speed on the 50mb package from 1.3Mb to 5.0Mb, and this morning took it down for optimisations it's been alot better i.e. the above tracert.

How good/bad virgin is just seems to depend where you are. I was on some of the original cable trials in Bristol and that was awesome but after a couple of years went to shit presumably due to over-subscription. I had it in plymouth too and it was shit. For people in London and Birmingham it always used to be a lot better. Have been on adsl for years now but about to try virgin in Norwich (installed next week) after doing some ping tests on a friends line. I'm hoping as most people here are out on their tractors or shagging their cousins the virgin broadband could be good.

My advice for you would be to get BE Unlimited ADSL if you can get it through your exchange (www.samknows.com). I can't get that here unfortunately!

Actually, I can get DSL through my BT line, but only 3mbp/s says BT...

So i might just go with virgin and pray that I'm not in a bad area
