I thought Haste and Quad, but the only prob is that Quad out powers it every time. So everyone would be going for quad, then getting haste as a bonus.

why is it a problem that quad outpowers haste? its not a key concept of tdm to have a clash of powerups, many maps only have 1 to begin with.
its up to the mapdesign to make any combination of PUs work. id say go for quad/haste

I think its about balance. The dominant team shoud get the strongest power up, and leave the shittier one for the lesser team.. Doesn't seem right.. More domination..

there are people that favour action tdm on 1 PU maps like dm6 or dm20 over 2 PU tacticals like dm14. as a spectator i find both exciting and i think its necessary to have both just like a mix of small/large maps in a duel mappool (iE. t7 vs toxicity)

now noctis summoned up what i wanted to say quite well.. if there are 2 PU maps, 1 PU maps and both work - why not have a 1,5PU map?
if your team fails at quad you can still kinda bug quad heavily with defensive rocket-haste-spam and if your team also fails there and u got 2PUs on the enemy then it may become and epic quad run for the viewers.
+an early haste could also result in some awesome quadsteals with good movement skill

i got the feeling this could lead to an unique mapfeel and still stay true to tdm / not get out of hand

Unlike q3, invisibility could just be nomipped in ql so it looks the same for everyone.

1.Randomness (or unlearnable crazy patterns, whichever it is) is utter gayness and should be avoided at all costs

2. Quake's weaponset is near perfection, the community is very elitist and adding a new weapon should be done really carefully, with much consideration

3. CG is dull, weird and overlaps with other weapons' functions heavily. The "keep dodging and aiming to take out the whole team" weapon is basically LG, which really is strong enough if you make use of your teammates. And obviously, making use of teammates ought to be encouraged more than the "position yourself well and move out with CG full-swing" tactic. TDM doesn't really need new skills, and to add such a dull one would be silly.

I'd even prefer nailgun. Out of the ones we have, that is.

i just love this fucking geo-ip-filtering. hell yeah.

i remember playing 2v2 on the q1 dm6 which had invisibility. it was funny as hell but really not worth it especially when you use shaft/rockets you can always predict rather easily where the opponent is coming from. its not like ur 100 percent invisible.

There's a floating hard to see skull in cpm, difficult to see while stationary on a light background.

the visibility does change with the user side settings tho. so if it isnt nomipped, its kinda gay to beginners.

One of the best things in Quake is that each gun has it's special purpose and no gun is redundant or obsolete. Quake does not need more weapons than the eight standard weapons.

When dm20 first came out for TDM it had Quad OR Haste (random I think) and I remember my team mates saying "This one will likely be Haste anyway" and not even attacking the PU...
Invisibility could be interesting but going for some kind of "balance", having Quad or BS on one side and Invisibility on the other would not work. It would be fun but it's not very useful compared to Quad and BS, which is obviously the best balanced combo...

I agree that Quad+BS is used too much. Invisibility and haste would be interesting to have but people don`t seem to be receptive of them for some odd reason.

For chaingun - as long as the map is open enough to make it useful then I`m all for it. The CG is only bad if the map is too cramped or tight to put it to good use. (i.e. Solid, Tornado)

Invisibility and Haste just don't dominate for 30 seconds in TDM like Quad or Suit do, and really quad and suit don't dominate like they used to either. Powerups need to be dominant really, if it was a Haste or Invis I don't think teams would be so concerned with trying to get them.

But one possibility for me would be to have the dominant powerup, either a quad or suit, with a minor powerup in addition to it. Put the minor powerup like a Haste/Invis/Regen on a shorter respawn timer, a minute for example, and I think it could be quite interesting.

well by that argument, invisi shouldnt work at all in cpm yes? i mean quad is like super dominant in cpm cos its well quad instead of tri and cos of cpm weapons. and yet invisi works fine.

not every powerup has to give you like 15 kills. invisi was good because it was good at quad ambushes if u used it well.

ps: i do agree quad and bs need to be 4x and 1/4x+no splash.

q3/ql does not have a 'real' invisibility, depending on your gfx settings it is pretty much visible and haste in tdm... does not really work all that well.
there's rarely a place you need to get to very fast, instead haste turns into the ultimate spam weapon in tdm.

What tools do the mappers have?


The options I'd consider are either making the powerups spawn more often, or maybe adding 3, 4 or 5 powerups in the map. Two powerups per room, perhaps in one spot (so you can't take just one) and maybe a powerup in a middle contested area or something. There are things to play with as we probably have a total of 4 good powerups (Quad, Regen, Haste and Battlesuit), and a few crappy ones too.


The only bad thing about this is that if we have 4 or 5 different people with different powerups on the map, it's too complex for most people to understand and probably too hard for the lazy players to learn, hence the two powerups in one spot suggestion.

Or... we could have id do a couple minutes of work and change a couple of weapons or powerups.. If only id did any work, listened to the community.. The saddest part is that they probably would do it if we (both the spectators and the competitive players, spearately) voted on things and proposed a brief list, but the community is too stubborn to do that, haha.

one of the things i was thinking about before starting our first map was having several armors on top of each other, like ya and ra on 1 spot so 1 guy gets 150 armor insta :D

I think we need a poll asking:

Firstly, do we fuck around with TDM?

Do we just play around TDM with maps, or do we also need gameplay changes?

Do we change powerup spawn times?

Do we stack armors?

Do we add more than two powerups per map?

Do we stack powerups?

Do we have alternating powerups?

etc. etc.

The results of the poll wouldn't be worth much but having the good players vote and express their opinions would be great, I think TDM needs some fresh air and, more importantly, a more qw-like balance.

I think 4 -5 PU's is a little extreme. 3 perhaps, Quad in one loaction, and regen and haste in another. Have regen and haste close enough so that one team could have both..

Need to make sure that Quad is not close to either of the other powerups ofc This may be enough to counter quad, and make it more balanced.

haste giving you bunnyhop ability is actually a pretty cool idea.

also i think tdm can seriously use stronger armors.

quad and bs on each side of the map with normal spawn time and put regen/haste/invi on the middle of the map with shorter spawn time, fe. 60 seconds.
or minor pu at the middle of the map with some armor/megahealth spawning 30 - 20 seconds before greater pu like quad or bs. could the "losing" team use the lesser powerup to attack the greater one.

We want a mix. One map with a single powerup and the next with five. Lets see some real clear play styles emerging and something unique about every map we play. One of the issues with streaming quake is the differences between players and teams is so subtle its difficult to communicate with out ridiculous exaggeration.

I say give them 2x haste if you wanna be special :D

tdm is a thriving game mode in quake live. I'm glad there's a discussion on it. This will surely help save quake live. The 3 people playing tdm in north america thank you.

- Battlesuit
- Quad

Sub powerups - 1 minute, 20 seconds respawn? (something a bit staggered)
- Invisibility
- Haste
