DOTA, HoN, and LoL are just games where you right click on shit. I played HoN once and was like, "Wtf is all this rightclicking, and why can't I move with WASD." Game's broke.

Actually that's so far beyond true. There are so many shortcuts used to play dota to activate the spells. You really have no idea if you think dota is just right click.... Dota is very difficult even at lower skill levels. Every step you take could be your last in that game. 1 wrong move, one wrong decision means gg. In QL when you die, you respawn and have the same chances to pick up from where you left off. In dota, a teammate's death means a huge blow to the team as a whole. Quake might be one of the most difficult fps games, but compared to dota it's easy. And that goes for any rpg where you're forced to multiclick during battles and have numerous commands at your fingertips. In QL you just shoot, zoom and press the use button. Everything else is extra and not necessary to win. It's ok to love quake but you really should try some other games if you think quake is all there is competitively...

the skill in Quake doesn't reside in how many buttons are used to play or how many colored stuff you can summon on the screen.

the quake series is the only game series that comes to mind for me, that does not at all rely on gimmicky gameplay.

every rpg relies solely on gimmicks, the dota-type gameplay being the pinnacle of that. latter rely very much on stats and different yes/no or another typ of choices the player has to make, to put their gameplay into effect.

i find the non-gimmicky type of gameplay to be very appealing, the most obvious one in quake is strafejumping:
you can't just read up or copy what you see on the screen to master a hard strafejump-map. its a learning process that relies heavily on an almost 'analog' input(where to point your mouse when and at what speed to move the mouse).

the rts genre has something similar, being real time and mouse controlled, allowing for almost infinite commands, if you're fast enough, but visually, you will not see very much of that (marine splitting, lurker-marine micro, or mad-ass macro in bw for example).

the fighting game genre i get to an extent aswell. the timings you have to have down just to finish simple combos is mind boggling. took 10 tries for me to do a sf4 challenge, standing jab - crouching jab. and it's supposed to be the easiest street fighter.

the dota genre i do not get. sure its a nudge more in the right direction than competitive wow was. but still, noones gonna fail clicking on something, most of the character skills are NOT socalled 'skill-shots'. and a very large portion of the game comes from knowing your stats and characters(same goes for fighting games ofcourse).

yeah theres timing last-hits, the dodging and alot of team strategy, and i get that it's very hard, i've tried it. it's just the overall fabric of the game is not for me.

i see the games maybe as following:

quake - exhausting to learn, hard to master
sc - easy to learn, hard to master
sf - first exhausting, then hard
LoL- easy to learn, then nothing
dota/hon - hard to learn, then nothing

Are you really speaking from experience, come to think of it "then nothing" when starting to play DotA, you'll need to learn all the heroes and recipies/items what to buy etc.

Then there's lane dominance/how to properly harass/how and when to push your tower/how you synchronize with your team/how well do you know your opponents strength/weaknesses on each hero. And every single game every "click" matters, you can lose an entire game losing a mid lane to an hard-carry hero. You probably have no idea what I'm talking about because you don't know the game, sync your disables correctly, what type of strat you will pick for the game. There are loads of skill factors that you are unaware of(saying that you've played dota a bit in pubs never at highlevel)

If you sufficiently twist the meaning of what memorization is, then yes.
But the difference is, memorization works only for things that were exposed to you already, while skill is deriving a certain rule from those exposed things and ability to apply that rule to something that you haven't seen before. In DOTA you know everything what enemy can do at any stage and you can just memorize proper replies to those things, while in Quake enemy can do billions of various things and you just cannot memorize them all, so you have to deduce some rules of how to deal with various situations, which is skill.

Quake is just muscle memorization and map memorization, which you can simply get good at by doing it a million times. What is it that you can't memorize about 4 basic movement directions, jumping, and shooting weapons?

I'm not sure I understood what are you asking about.
In dota there is just huge list of rules how to properly play by X vs Y. Anyone who memorizes those rules will play equally good as the best player in the world.
In Quake there is nothing you can memorize.

There is a point in there that DOTA-style games are quite rock-paper-scissorsy and depend mostly on teamwork with not as much emphasis on individual skill. Once you have learned the build for your hero and a general notion of how other heroes work, the overall basics (ganking, map awareness, nuances of aggressive and defensive play, last hitting).. there's suddenly a void of what you can work on in terms of individual skills. You can always improve your teamplay, but you're not going to rape several people alone, provided they have somewhat of an idea of how to play.

Then there's the thing that certain hero combinations do not work and are horrible together. Does not present a huge problem in inhouses, but can totally screw you over in a pub.

None of this means that I don't play a DOTA clone right now and that I won't be playing DOTA2 when it comes out.

Very true and if you really feel that way you should be watching replays of players like M5.G/Dendi/Misery/yaphets to name a few very skilled solo players, all of these players will win 99% of the solo players in the world atm you can't just win or call a certain sololane a cointoss.

Yeah 2-4 skills + 1 or 2 items that 's to much at the same time... Moba games is easy to learn but hard to master Quake on the other hand is not easy to learn. Some people may say so but that's completely wrong.
I have played alot of Dota and Lol, only Hon once.

Moba games are so so team based and extremely hard to do something alone.
In Quake there is less teamplay compared to Moba games but you are able to if you are good to take matters into your own hands and that is what I just love about Quake. I think when games becomes so teambased that you can't do anything on your own it just gets so boring imo.

In QL when you die, you respawn and have the same chances to pick up from where you left off.

Most skilled team-game I've ever played ;p (dota that is) team very team-demanding and there are frequent updates and it's getting great support, amazingly huuuuge playerbase not same 5-10players like in Quake, not always the same stars. Most team-demanding game I've played, not as much individual skill as in quake like 1v1, I cant be arsed too hungover to explain it deeply but you need to watch/play some dota to know why it's the greatest esport game atm.

Quake needs something new every now and then to keep up with the consistant viewers and new stars, more players etc but whatever you already know this

It still doesn't make sense, they remove half the skills that are there in other games and you are left with nothing but those few things that are there. It's a joke of an esport even if you do have to be the best at communicating to win at it (and that's assuming it's the hardest as a teamgame.. Which it probably isn't).
