Duel/tdm isn't noob friendly and FFA certinely could be made more noob friendly, e.g. timer for quad or something (countdown beeps?).

its a good thing, but we need to be careful to need spread too thin, the ql population cant fill servers for 10 modes. so i think making freezetag free and focusing the work on other more pressing issues would the better idea. + defrag :)

€: oh the ca thing was brought up by memento some time ago here on esr afaik. players immediately respawn for the other team when they die, and the round ends when one team is empty. players have individual scores, with some basic teamplay and its non stop action

on a side note, a good way to compensate for actual content is to allow pro users to spawn servers with pmove_, g_ and other commands available for them at all times.

That is especially true if id adds a menu to spawn certain gametypes easily, for example all the devpicks so far with just one click, settings to emulate older quake games (including cpm if they finally fix pmove_airaccel), and even matches against bots, cheats enabled and other blocked commands since content is there but just not available, just like pmove's.

It's not a total conversion mod, but maybe we could switch the weapons around a bit? Rail, rockets and lg are fine, but the other weapons have very little practical application. Why not have a weapon optimized for the distance between short and mid-range? And another for mid-long.

Also, what about a new item, that gives you a speed-boost? It could be like the medkit, and gives you a 5 second boost.

1v1, but when you defeat a player, you keep getting opponents with whatever h/a you have left. First to 10 (or whatever). Players joining the server are in a queue- player eliminated goes to bottom of queue.

Some sort of "Training" mode where you have movement maps to learn & improve on strafing and maps like q3amphi for aim; also Red Rover from ra3 could be fun. :>

What about an art mod? Instead of modding gameplay, someone could mod the visual and audio schemes. Not only could it make the game more enjoyable, it could also bring in new audiences. You know how people like to look at nice tits. They don't care so much for fatties though. It's a crude example, but still true. I would think moving, dynamic art like you find in a video-game could be interesting and challenging for an artist.

Far as gameplay mods, someone on irc was saying they find tdm like 'soccer with many goals'. I understand the point of view. There's no focal point. A game with a clear focal point is a better game. Maybe someone could mod that into team-based Quake?

The rule of thumb, when it comes to pro-sports, is that if the game is good to watch in a pub, while you're drinking with other people, it will be a successful pro-sport. Honestly, no one would watch QL in a pub. It's too technical. You really have to pay attention to know what's going on. Watching the games is almost like a sport in itself.

Watching the game should be a casual experience. It should be something you can enjoy while you're drunk (and/or other things), and only partially paying attention.

With that in mind, how could someone mod Q3/QL to make it pub-worthy?

It's all about big-plays and replay-potential. In baseball, you have homeruns. In American football, you have touchdowns, fumbles, interceptions, and long-yardage plays. In soccer, you have corners, pk's and goals. The rest of the time, there's enough lull in the action to show instant replays. In Quake, there's nothing like that. Even when there are important plays, they happen very quickly, almost to the point you don't notice them. You really have to pay attention, and know the game, or you miss every important play. There is also no room for instant replays, which is especially bad for people who miss the big-plays.

CTF is better about these things, and more so if there is only one flag. Capping flags or flag 'turnovers' could count as big plays, and in between those two things, there is plenty of time to show instant replays.

Specs really shouldn't have to pay such close attention to the game. What i'm talking about is taken to the next level by something like the Red Zone channel. This is a channel for American football that shows nothing but big plays. And then, of course, you have shows like on ESPN, where they show nothing but highlights. How would stuff like that work in Quake? It would be lame as shit.

Lulls in the action, big-plays, and replay-potential. Those are three things that make for a great spectator experience. Maybe Quake is more like boxing than the other sports, but, in boxing, there are lulls in the action, knockdowns, cuts and knockouts, and plenty of replay-potential.

Ok, how about this... ctf with 1 flag, but instead of a flag, it's a bomb. The objective is to blow up your opponents base. The bomb can be passed by simply shooting it, and scored the same way (in other words, it's like using a weapon). The goal is very small, so when you shoot the bomb in, it has to be done accurately. To defend the goal, a new weapon could be implemented, which does no damage, but allows you to catch the bomb or knock the bomb out of the air.

Obviously, if there's only one 'flag', the teams must alternate starting possession of it. That can be done in many different ways, some better than others.

Ok, cancel the defense weapon. If the bomb is fired like a long-range grenade, it should be difficult enough to score.

I remember playing a Q3 mod some years ago which was exactly like that, except the maps it was played on were miniature soccer fields.

For Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force there was a mod called QBall where a ball was placed in the middle of actual CTF maps.

Last Man Standing FFA, it's super campy so people will like it.

to make QL popular, you have to dumb it down as much as possible ... basically you just have to make a FFA mod where you spawn with all weapons and full ammo, but you only have 3 weapons (rl, railgun, lightning-bolt) ... the principle to be used is KISS ...
