The books are quite good. For fantasy anyways. I have never read a good fantasy book, except this and Joe Abercrombie's stuff. 99% of this segment its utter crap.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand
1st episode not so good. Then it gets good.
Rome
It grows on you and when it finishes you miss it.

maybe try them also. I don't think u will regret it (really low risk :p). If you decide to watch spartacus, watch first the prequel Spartacus: Gods of the Arena

Maybe you're like me, that is you don't like series much and prefer films.

The only series that I have ever finished are those you mentioned and Game of Thrones.
But I still can't say I enjoyed them THAT much. To me it's still nothing like a good film/game/book/whatever.

And I don't watch TV at all (don't even have it actually, and even when I'm at my parents we never turn it on unless there's some decent film).

The Wire is still on my list of series to try though, I've had the first episode on my laptop for months.

I don't watch tv a lot. Movies on the other hand, have seen most worth watching.

After watching game of thrones, I checked IMDB to find other series that I might like. From ur list, I only tried wire. Watched the 1st episode and then deleted the rest.

I also liked the series that I mention in the post above. They are all like movies. I only watch sports in tv and the series u mention don't seem worth watching on pc. Tried wire though cause of its high IMDB rating and the interesting plot.

From other kind of series, I was only faithfull to friends, but liked few others too.

If u have any suggestions, I will check them, since I just finished Rome (last week) and now have nothing to see (apart from IAAF World Championships and Eurobasket next week).

edit: bsg u mean "Battlestar Galactica"? I downloaded that too, but it had the same faith as the wire, even though I like sci-fi. After the first episode, which I hardly manage to watch until the end, I deleted the rest without any hesitation (much easier than the wire).

By the way, at a similar fashion downloaded the "Space Above and Beyond" as well, which has only 8.1 in IMDB, but seemed like something would like to watch. Should I try it, or don't bother and delete it?

you should give "the wire" another try, it's the best tv i've ever seen. the first season is a slow starter but so rewarding. the way they tackle social issues in the series is something i've never seen before (or again).

"battlestar galactica" is great sci-fi, not sure if you like sci-fi, if you do, give it a try. i prefer the art direction and story telling of bsg to even most sci-fi movies.

"breaking bad" and "dexter" are fun, exploitative takes on the crime theme, worth checking out eventhough i find bb suprisingly depressing at times.

"the west wing" is a polit drama series, it's good but can be slow and boring if you're not into this.

i liked "friends" a lot, "how i met your mother" is similar (and tries to be similar), worth a try atleast.

"twin peaks" is just miles above everything else but it's so different that it's hard to recommened unless you like david lynch and if you do, you've probably seen it already.

I really like david lynch. I considered watching it (twin peaks), but the year 1990 makes it seem kind of old for series (I don't mind watching old movies though). I might give it a try.

in bsg, I din't really like the 33min jump plot (or at least the way it was presented and supported), the "woman in dream" or whatever that was (that alone probably made me delete it), the president who cared so much about civilians that was noting the casualties in a black board (couldn't be any farther from reality and any more pointless) and all the clishe and stupid acting.

Twin peaks is WEIRD!

The Big Bang Theory might be for you, watch one its only 20min a piece.

yes, I liked that. It was in the few others list that I liked, like the office (the British one) and the green wing (also British).

I might also try the american version of the office.

The Wire is definitely worth checking out. Judging a series by its first episode is pretty bad, especially for something like The Wire. Sure, if you try out a sitcom, say How I met Your Mother, then I can see why abandoning it after 1 episode is justified, since it's just a generic sitcom with the same pace, same characters, hardly any development, no storyline etc. The Wire on the other hand develops, and a lot at that. Especially since all characters are interwoven and have great depth. Takes a few episodes to get going, but after all, there are 5 seasons, with season 2 being the worst in my opinion.

I was probably harsh. 9.7 in IMDB can't be wrong, not for series. In movies the rating is frequently way off, especially since most voters are Americans (no offense intended, but in EU we don't value as much big explosions and overdramatic acting), but for series I expect the rating to be a pretty good indication.

I'm guessing you aren't aware of what is known as pilot episodes. The first episode of a series is always the worst.

5-3-4-1-2; but they are all enjoyable

I feel the same as xero, I finished reading the series recently and really enjoyed it.

the books are set up weird. At least Game of Thrones is. each chapter deals with a different person. Some have more than one chapter and some don't. It can get really confusing, but they are really really good.

yah i've read the first one and loved it. quite enjoyed the character based chapters actually. the are so many names though of other people/knights etc that its hard to keep track of all the families members.. though there is a tree at the back

Saw the show & so bought the first book about 3 weeks ago, I'm currently on A Feast For Crows :O))

This is the first fantasy book I've had since Lord Of The Rings as a child & I love it. Just so many interlocking plot twists and "OH NO SHE DIDN'T" moments. How the hell do you discuss without massive spoilers?

at most 2.5 out of 5 stars and thats being generous.

The series is really going in a bad direction with the latest novels IMHO. I'm losing interest in the hundredths of different characters and their fates. Sad. because it started so immensely promising.

Read the 1st and 2nd books this summer, both were great. Not reading anymore cause I have lots of other crap to read and these are too long for somebody who (ATM) wants a bit of everything, hah, but I hope to resume one day.

You'd expect all those findings about spoilers making content more enjoyable to make it easier to accept them, but still hate 'em. And without them, this thread is really about not talking about the elephant in the room.

The tv series is quite good. The books are for those with unlimited patience because in order to read 50 pages of meaningful story you read 5000 pages of crap. The author's writing style is also quite bad for a professional. He has the descriptive ability of 8-bit graphics.

For those not wanting to watch the episodes until they've read the 1st book, go watch it, it's quick and tells you all you need to know.

Really, I find his descriptions quite wonderful with a lot of thought behind them -- the man does his research!

Watched it and thought it was okay but that's it.

Won't read the books since I've noticed a lot of people (including people that read more than most) saying it's not really well written and I already got so much to read that I cba even trying.

I'm sure about that. His style is awkward at times, but I do find it easy to ready as well as remaining descriptive and informative.

I jumped on the bandwagon after the show premiered and when I had some free time in July I decided to read them. If I like a book, I get really immersed in it, so I read the first three in the space of four days (started on Sunday lunchtime and by Wednesday was into the fourth) THEN FUCKING CRAPBRINGER REVEALS A FUCKING KEY POINT TO ME ON IRC AND I FUCKING RAGED SHIT CUNT BALLS RAGE FFFFFUUUU. I haven't touched a page ever since :c

If I was a character, I would avoid going for the cliche of going for the Stark house since they are the protagonist house as their actions (along with blonde dragon chick) are primarily out of compassion and good will even among the minions (lannister raiders are first hand torturers and maradeurs, stark ones are freedom fighters c: ) and ignore the antagonist houses (lannister and greyjoy to a lesser extent) and go for the Tyrells since they hold a key combination of power, sanity and aren't really explored as deeply as I would like (their history and characters could be developed more deeply in my opinion)

Or if a minor house, those bear island motherfuckers are O.G. head of nights watch and queen Daenaerys' kings guard show a $$$ father and son duo. And their representatives show none of the rage / mechanical and untamed chauvinism of the greyjoys of iron islands nor the apathy + feeling of superiority so common within the stark realm towards the other major houses (despite being a stark house)
