The actual layout has very little amount of changes, since all I did was change the CSS.

The problem with Clown's design is, that it has no real contrast. If he wanted to make a bright design (white as main color + 1-2 effect-colors) he should have taken a les bright orange. If he wanted to make a dark design (black/darkgray as main color + 1-2 effect-colors) he should have left the orange as it is but make the background black/darkgray and the font white.

Just to point out, web 2.0, is a buzz word that really means user generated content. It doesn't really have to do anything with web designs.

But since most of the web kinda turned int user-geneated content, the design-strategies currently used by most of the web-designers/developers could be titeled Web 2.0 aswell.

I've chosen a black background for most of my text because it's easier on the eyes than staring at a white screen. Think about it: your monitor is not a piece of paper, no matter how hard you try to make it one. Staring at a white background while you read is like staring at a light bulb (don't believe me? Try turning off the lights next time you use a word processor). Would you stare at a light bulb for hours at a time? Not if you want to keep your vision.

This is actually exactly as I expected from esr, I'm not mad, or happy, I just wanted to show the design. Some people have made good comments, and I'm happy for that. In esr spirit, I have to try and have efights with everyone that doesn't make constructive comments.

The design is what sirax wanted me to base the qlranks design off of. Many people like it. There's somethings I'm not happy with, but those are things I'm learning from.

I've been using this self made mess of a script for a while. It does pretty much what you ask for, though. It's disabled on user pages because no matter what I did it always ended up removing the entire user box. Feel free to try it out. Fair warning though, I'm not exactly a great coder, or a coder at all. Trial and error all the way, baby! :)

I've worked on various ESR replacements over the years. most recently I was working on an entirely new site+backend with brandan, who was also working on the actual ESReality site to introduce new features and fix bugs, but it looks like he's gone inactive. our project stalled a bit, but it's not too far from being finished (well, ready for public, that is) if I ever decide to pick it up again. the code is a lot more clean, modularized, and secure, and I think the design is pretty good.

q4 is capped in code and full of bugs and glitches at 16 players, then all the code for each entity will be full of bugs and glitches that killed the game, that are all fixed in Q43A cos most of the driver has been recoded and is capped at 128 slots for maxplayers

making q4 handle more then 16 player is more then just setting the maxclients define higher

Not to knit pick or anything, but you're missing the pretty important doctype. I think if you're going to do a complete redesign of any site, it should be made responsive. The content part is pretty lame, it should be the best looking thing. Nice work though, I hope someday we can update this site, stay current with the times. Just because the games we play are 10 years old, doesn't mean the site needs to be too.

I've only made a few responsive designs, one is just a simple stylesheet for markdown output. Other's are just small sites I did for people. Responsive design really has nothing to do with actual markup or code, it's mainly the style. Ofc you can use things like js to enhance it. Content is also important, if you use the "mobile first" approach. So as it stands, it wouldn't work too well with the current esr without hiding lots of things.

I'm not sure what you mean by responsive. I don't feel like reading your link right now. if you're referring to simplicity, compression, and things like that, that's all part of the plan. if you mean AJAX or similar, we mostly decided to leave those elements out because they're actually a little too convoluted/band-aidy.

the DOCTYPE is irrelevant; it's a mock-up that's unfinished. there are other markup errors to be fixed before we worry about compliance. I'm aware of that already.

the design is not at all complete, either. the backend has a lot more to it, but brandan was handling all the design stuff, so that's pretty much why the whole thing ever stalled in the first place. I mean, whenever I made some new code, it has to be added to the site design as well and sometimes it's sort of a chicken-and-egg deal. in any event, that's really just the basics of it, so as it stands the look itself is fairly simple, but we had a lot of plans for it and many of the features are already in place in the back end. it just needs recussitation.

edit: forgot to mention--one of the most fundamental concepts for the site is the whole KISS philosophy. this has been my general approach to programming for years, as someone at least moderately involved in F/OSS and such. I think that performance is generally a necessary outcome of simplicity as well.

I'm aware of the whole mobile-conscious thing and all, though personally it's never seemed that pertinent to me. it may be just because I'm a bit of a luddite and always way behind on gadgetry.. but I'm totally open to that philosophy, anyway. I mean, one of the central features planned for our site was having a small footprint, as well as accessibility features like proper RSS feeds (ESReality as it is does have RSS feeds, but they're very, uh, rough around the edges).

It's not only about "mobile" but really about working on any device or screen. Be it an ipad, netbook, small browser window, etc. Many sites force you to scroll horizontally and cut of content oddly in these circumstances.

I didn't do the actual design, but I've always been a huge proponent of relative width and stuff, and I'm not exactly sure off the top of my head how the CSS was made with regard to that, but there was a known problem with some of the relative positioning @ actual 1680x1050 res, as brandan was working on 1440x900. can you elaborate a bit more on what your main concerns are?

I don't get this. One of the main reasons I visit ESR is the forums, and - since there is a nested comments system - long discussions benefit a lot from using the entire width of the page. Long posts are also easier to read that way, imo.

WTF is that logo? It makes no sense at all. Why there is a notch at the top on right side of vertical stick? Why the bottom end of the stick is sharpened? Is this something that is supposed to be inserted into the ground? Maybe this is poorly drawn mirrored greek letter phi? What it has to do with anything? Logo looks just like randomly drawn symbol resembling Quake logo a little bit.
Why there are 3 diagonal lines in the background near the logo?
Why everything starts in lowercase?
Why on the right side blocks, two angles are bevelled?
Etc.
You've just threw up a mix of random elements and called it a "design".

The logo is the Quake logo merged with the lower case letter 'e'.

The 3 slants are presumably there because the old logo has something similar.

Design is a concept of how (and why) people would interact with the webpage. Visual appearance is secondary to design and is dictated by it.
The visual elements demonstrated in your redesign do not make any sense from design point of view, they have no meaning in the process of user-web service interaction and are just some visual noise that gets in the way.

the point of my post was to illustrate that VPNs have _nothing to do with_ routing, as they do not. VPNs are just what the name says: virtual private networks. they are virtual extensions of "logical networks" approximating a close-range, physical network over higher level protocols. it is that simple. you do not have to do any routing whatsoever to run a VPN. this is a secondary function. this is about like clownFart's posts on "htaccess," saying that it has some relationship to DNS. well, if he's talking about Apache's ServerAlias, then yeah in some sense it's vaguely related, but there is no DIRECT relationship. the point of my post was to clarify this misconception which I have experienced extensively in discussions about VPNs and routing in Quake. you don't seem to get this, because all you're focused on is some extremely superficial, literal interpretation of what I wrote which allows you to feel as if you've committed some exceptional victory of technical knowledge. just lol.

LOL, you are so dumb. When you talk about your experience, you actually make a laughingstock of yourself, because it turns out that you are just some Linux admin who haven't actually worked with network equipment at all.
First of all, we don't just talk about some abstract VPNs here. We're talking specifically about establishing a VPN to someone else in the internet and use it as a gateway for communicating with other internet hosts, so the whole process implies that we must send all packets destined for the internet to that remote gateway instead of letting our local gateway to decide where to send them. This cannot work without adding new routes into routing table, so even if VPNs themselves theoretically do not require routing, this particular use of VPNs MUST implement re-routing (i.e. change routing table).
Second, this results precisely in systemic alteration of how my transit through the internet is determined, because, well, I know it's very hard to understand, but no matter what the destination host is, packets will always first travel to my remote gateway in the VPN (i.e. initial part of path to ANY internet host will become completely fixed), and then they will travel from that gateway to destination host using routes from there (i.e. most of the times, path will be traversing through completely different nodes compared to no VPN).
Let me summarize for the morons:
Q: Will my local routing table change when I connect to a remote VPN and use some node from it as my default gatway? A: Yes.
Q: Will using a default gatewey from remote VPN systematically alter paths from me to internet hosts? A: Yes.
Q: Can the phenomena above be called "re-routing"? A: Yes.
Q: Is tyryl a moron? A: At this point, there cannot be even a slightest doubt that he is.

Generally, what you say is either: plain wrong to the point that it contradicts simplest common sense (i.e. that routing packets through VPN would not systematically affect the path from you to internet hosts), or: correct, but has no relevance to the subject whatsoever (i.e. that VPNs are different from routing).

I get everything that you say. What you say is irrelevant to the original idea of using VPNs to lower ping, and at some point it becomes pure bullshit.
The whole purpose of using VPN's in our case is to re-route traffic without having to do the impossible and making ISPs change their routing policy just for one user.
Now just look at how moronic your statements are. We have a goal to re-route our traffic destined for some server to a different path, we have a result where we have a different path to that server which gives us lower latency, and to achieve that we used VPN. And knowing all that, you then tell that VPNs have nothing to do with re-routing, even though using VPN is precisely what achieved our primary goal to re-route traffic, and that it's the most retarded idea ever.
Seriously, you just took some real and proven facts and began contradicting them with your moronic bullshit, driven by false impression that you have any knowledge or experience in networks after obtaining some Linux certification.
