Your PS2 port will only be dedicated to the mouse, while there will be a shitload of shit shitting shit inside your USB ports to the USB controllers, hence the worse latency, especially since the protocol used by these controllers is shit.

All I can say is that PS/2 is better than USB for keyboards. I'm not sure why USB is the default on the 6Gv2 though (and not sure it matters either).

Anyway to keep things simple: USB works by having the OS polling the keyboard constantly (by default every 8 ms) which means that it uses CPU cycles and has some latency while with PS/2 the keyboard simply sends a hardware interrupt when a key is pressed, there is no delay or anything.

So unless you need hotplugging, you should use PS/2.

PS/2 has NKEY rollover.

USB does not.

It doesn't matter if it has USB or PS/2 adapter. The adapter just makes it fit into the port, while it uses the same wires inside the cable for both ports anyway.

Does not affect keyboard performance to any visible extent. We reversed the connection because it simply makes more sense in this day and age where very few motherboards still have ps2 ports - or just have one - and USB is by far the primary connection method.

About the NKEY rollover. I recently bought a Noppoo Choc Mini, which has it over USB.

My advice: Just get a keyboard which you like best, if there's a ps/2 version of it for the same price, get that.

Filco made Majestouch-2 Linear R limited edition while ago. Both tenkeyless and normal version, but it think its pretty much sold out.

Just got Noppoo Choc mini with red switches yesterday, first thing i did plugged it into ps/2 with adapter and it has full NKRO with ps/2 and USB.

About latency human eyes wont be able to see difference of few milliseconds here and there, but whole chain of electronics which add those "u wont see a difference its just few ms" add up.

Talking about cpu/gpu adding 20-40ms, monitor 10-40ms, mouse and keyboard 1-8ms.

Yeah it's all about the input chain. If you can use PS/2 over USB for your keyboard - just do it.

But if you can't it doesn't matter too much and it's not worth upgrading your mobo/keyboard just for that reason.

I like the feel of the mx reds, but aside from the switches, I prefer the build quality of my Filco keyboard. Space bar key is noisy and loose. It would have been better to have Home and End as normal keys instead of Pause and Switch-Lock.

I bought it from Bidstation (Hong Kong) from ebay, but he's out of mx reds now. Only one has mx reds atm and he's from Hong Kong also.

A mouse needs to be polled constantly, not like a keyboard, so I guess that makes USB better unless you stick to 125hz.

Just got my 6gv. The respond time of this keyboard is pretty sick but I have to have force when to push down buttons which I DON'T like at all! I will send back this keyboard on monday. Cherry Brown is probably better for me.

you can put some "rings" under it thus shorting the keystroke. i had to get used to the keyboard as well (missed a lot of jumps in the beginning because the space bar needs a lot of pressure) however, overall I would buy it again but possibly with brown cherry switches if steelseries offered those.

Am I missing something or is a keyboard just a keyboard?

I've tried many keyboards (friends) and the most comfortable reliable I've ever used is a standard logitech multi-media keyboard which I bought for 10 quid. The other keyboards I owned were free dell products.

NicholAs, there are problems with certain key combinations in many keyboards which some call ghosting, you can search the internet about this for more details... However basically you push X number of keys and the keyboard thinks you pushed an additional key is what happens (a ghost key is pressed). If you haven't noticed this with the keyboard you are using it is definitely cheaper if I don't tell you how to find it since keyboards designed to avoid this typically cost more than 10 quid...

Not just sounds but feels different, in fact much better and they outlast the standard rubber dome keyboards by far. In addition there's a nice variety of switches available so you can choose the one you like the most. Altough I agree with you on the price maybe it's a bit much (expensive but durable vs cheap products).

I have spent a small fortune on mechanical keyboards (I own 5 of them). I do not like to type on anything else anymore. My first one is the only one that I really didn't like since the throw on the switches was too hard (linear force blacks).

The advantages of a mechanical switch keyboard is first of all, you can get several different switch types with the same keyboard design. They can vary the feedback i.e. a click can occur when the switch fires, or you can feel a "bump" as you pass the firing point, or there can be no feedback in the switch. They can vary the force needed to press the switch. The switches are more consistent during the life of the keyboard (they don't start to wear and get mushy like older rubber dome keyboards can). You can get a keyboard with NKRO which means that if you truly in game can hit 10 keys at once and truly mean to hit ten keys at once, all 10 keys will be sent to the game properly (N really means as many as you can push, but since I am limited to 10 fingers I limited my example to 10 here). No ghosting (see my other anonymous post above) since the switch wiring that mechanical keyboard manufacturers do is different than the rubber dome keyboards.

That is why I use mechanical, now that I am used to them, it is a nasty shock anytime I use a rubber dome keyboard... as the guy above said "it just feels better" and it definitely does once you find the switch type you like...

The problem with them is the price of entry. They are expensive. They do not make your gameplaying better (unless if you are suffering from ghosting, or can truly hit a lot of keys at once). Considering that they are about 4-6 times as expensive as normal rubber dome keyboards it definitely is a luxury item. I like them and think they are worth the money. I just wish that I had a shop near me where I could have tried the different switch types for myself rather than buying several different models to try them out. Come to think of it, I probably should sell some of these...

in my case I hit ghosting when I was moving in a diagonal direction while crouched and reloading with my old dome keyboard... so I was hitting four keys and a fifth keypress was occurring (which unfortunately was originally mapped to drop weapon). This was one, but only one of the reasons I tried my first mechanical...

For gaming, I wouldn't force anyone to get a mechanical keyboard, but for typing (I mean someone who does quite a lot of it) I'd recommend anyone (yes, anyone) to at least TRY one.

What are the pro's and con's of having a mechanical keyboard for typing? Is it the quiet factor or?

The feeling is completely different and once you get used to it you can type better/faster and as far as I'm concerned it's much more comfortable during long typing sessions.

Only con I can think of is the noise tbh (and the price too although they are supposed to be very reliable and to last forever).

i bought a mechanical keyboard for work, i bought one for the place i do most uni work, i even sometimes bring one to the library. once you are used to the speed and comfort of typing on one, you hate having to use anything else.
everytime i take my netbook someplace remote, i cringe at the thought of having to type lots :C

The 6Gv2 is built with a USB as standard, but we also included a USB to PS/2 adapter in the box. The choice is yours.

We absolutely recommend using the PS/2 connector when possible. First,it will give you total freedom with no limit to the amount of simultaneous key presses. And, equally as important, using the PS/2 may just improve your overall gaming experience. The reason is that when you use a USB keyboard your computer is actually using CPU time polling your keyboard. The higher the polling rate the more CPU time is used to perform the polling. And because of the built-in debounce rate found on any quality keyboard, any polling rate above 200Hz is simply a waste of CPU time and really just a result of pointless marketing hype. Unlike USB keyboards a PS/2 keyboard isn’t polled at all. The keyboard simply sends a signal to the computer as key presses are made, which causes a hardware interrupt, forcing the CPU to register the signal.
