10) Listen to the community and answer questions regarding upcoming features and start a Q&A session series that people can tune into on djwheat's radio channel.
11) hire vedic to kill q3, so the remaining q3 playerbase comes to ql?
12) hire fudge911, xtruder, lochdog, jamalz and jameiro to troll the cod, tf2 and other competing gaming forums.

Actually yes, it is. Progress made by community developed sites like qlstats by mute, and qlranks by sirax were made possible by centralized database driven and fast setup they provided on quakelive. Which OSP stats files never could compete to, as they involved user interaction with desktop based tool, or uploading to a site a being limited to other people uploading relevant data.

Ye everyone disbelieves that. Yet somehow people (obv not me and you as useless fucks we're just typing shit), are developing things related to quake, qlranks, ql stats, greacemonkey scripts, streaming relevant stuff. There are teams streaming games, and organising tournaments. Even if they throw out 1 new map, I'd call it development, since by their standards it is.

So when compared with q3 as a pretty dust covered thing most old player don't want to get back to (will remove their sense of new effort invested into Quake in general), and most new player aren't gonna baited in finding this 12 year old title to pay for and play without any endorsing by the original developer itself. that endorsement is QL deal with it :)

Ofcourse many things here are catches and speculations just waiting for us to fruther this pessimistic vs optimistic view of a game. But alas won't bring us anywhere other then to a stalemate with some playing it and other hating it. Most don't caring about it.

Not pessimist, realist. QL was a fraction of the popularity of Q4, and Q4 was an absolute failure. To expect anything more from QL is just blind faith.

I really hope we agree to disagree on things like:

I favor QL because it's happening now. It's not a title 12 years old that has no more connection to id than yesterdays paper.

I favor the half full database, maybe loosing clients and stats now, but ready AND SET UP to gain more as more come.

As for the bugs, you can wave a lot of arguments that way. ALL are very good, and true. CPM is better, vq3 is less buggy, OSP has better stat overview. We're talking about things that don't belong in the interface and the thing quake arena started becoming with this experiment.

If you like q3 and cpm, and things not yet converted to QL go play them as they currently are and as they'll stay until they are no more.

What I'm talking about here is: we have a half baked quake arena title, which needs things converted to it, to gather what is left of communities still tied to Q3A and every mode that is out there.
Need things developed for it.
Needs mouse fixes, and needs ladder, and needs a whole lot of stuff.

Whether it's worth working on it, I'm not to decide, neither are you for that matter. You can indorse the change or be against it. That's why realist views don't quite cut it here.
All I can do is talk about what is needed, what could be done, and maybe come up with something smart, or working, or a good idea. The people at zenimax/betehsda/id will either further develop this game, or pull the plug.

You want a community manager so you can get the things you want from Q3 into QL, along with a few small bells and whistles. Did you forget how well those features worked for Q3? Q4? They didn't. They don't bring in players.

QL has already lost the vast majority of people who have played it, so the database is only serving as a convenience for those who are left, not as a foundation for people to join.

lets assume a guy contacts every gaming organization available and manages to get 2 more LANs a year. ID just wouldn't be bothered to send a guy to those to allow LAN play, therefore it just doesn't work.

the same guy creates a prioritized wish list of what we want, and which of those are easier to achieve. ID still isn't forced to do something about it.
On the other hand "we" (aka xou) should do that list anyway.

I and many others are continually paying for a game we love, yet every month that passes we see it still disease-ridden and death-bound. I have never said I want to be informed of every little change, I said I want transparency so that we can see if the reasons for us not getting what we are paying for are legitimate reasons or bullshit reasons.

Any other game, and I would have cancelled my subscription long ago, realizing that the communities opinion does not matter to the company, but I really love QL enough to stay subscribed, and hope that soon they will realize that the community is right and they are wrong. The Q3/QL community is one of the oldest gaming communities there is, we know what works, we know what fails, we know what we want, and some of us even know how it can be done in the easiest way possible.

Because of this, the community should choose someone who ID software is willing to offer transparency to regarding the QL project. Their sole reason for not agreeing to do so would be because they are in fact mismanaging the money they receive from subscriptions. If they really are doing their best but have limited resources, they would have no problem with my suggestion.

You're talking about a completely separate position. Community manager = Id's employee whose role is to 'manage' their communication with the players. The role you're talking about would have to be voluntary, and there's no way Id would officially grant him any status. (If they are bullshitting, as you suggest, that's intentional -- why would they employ someone to undermine their own attempts at PR and spin?) I don't think a vote would work (for one thing the community never agrees on anything, for another if they did they'd probably make a terrible decision for the laughs or something) -- best chance is someone who naturally rises to a position of respect (e.g. a pro player or top-quality shoutcaster caster), and establishes an informal relationship with Id.

Things that will not be used. Like the other 22 inactive map. Guess that wont bring loads of new customers, yet it will take time and money. Therefor make loss, which is as bad as hiring a guy to do community managing. But if you Sync or anyone thats already an employee start to read more demands, and actually care about them, and yet only fix minor problems -Stair bug- you will make more and more people happy with yet a very small input / progress, rather than make another map that is as succesful as stonekeep (which nobody ever played on a serious basis in cups, cuz it is mondo fail)

I'm (honestly) curious, do you (or anybody else) know what has to be done?
I mean, with a custom QL map (like what citty made for example) you get everything with the pak files, right?.
Perhaps you delete some duplicated assets - what you already have in older paks - and tweak some other resources, but it's nothing big I guess.
You need to do site part of course (snapshot in browser, icons, etc) and also reference the new map in the game (flags like if it's premium or not, votes, stats, etc)...
What else?, isn't this a few days of work max after you did it the first time?, or what am I missing here?

Well, having been a mapper for over 7 years now, i can tell you that the majority of the time in mapmaking deals with layout and design concept. Once you have an idea what to do, the rest can be done in literally hours if you know what you're doing. This quake community is however very picky when it comes to maps so coming up with a concept that is liked by a majority of the community is time consuming.

Sync is working on his own maps. But if someone wants to make a map that id includes in their updates they have to give id the rights to their map, which most mappers from previous quakes are asking money for. Hence why many of those maps have yet to surface (they are asking too much or id can't afford their price, even if it was reasonable)

why would anyone spend 40+ hours a week dealing with one of the most insufferable communites in gaming with no pay? certainly id would never spend a dime on an employee whos sole purpose is to 'manage' communications with the infinitely small community that quake is

The primary goal is transparency. ID Software need to prove to our hypothetical Community Manager that they really are trying their best to sort out QL with the resources available. From this, 2 things can happen:

- We discover they actually are not doing everything they can to sort out QL with the resources available. Everyone cancels subscriptions and we fuck off back to Q3. (If this is the case they wouldnt actually want there to be any transparency.)

- They are trying their best. They need us, the veteran community, to tell them what we need and what we dont need, to streamline the process.

Less important is the communication of the communities needs, they already have a sticky post on the QL forums with the priorities.

I honestly believe QL is sorted out to nearly the best it possibly can be with the resources being thrown at it, which is hardly anything at all. If you think id is going to spend another dime on QL, you are delusional. And why would they tell a 'community manager' the truth if he was a volunteer? That would only be detrimental towards their image which is already beyond tarnished, they are a dying company and rage is their last hope.

melechesh is right about a few things here:
We don't need someone to go around and tell us: Ye go to sleep, everything will be perfect with QL tomorrow, then tucks us in etc.
Most people here are older members and come from q3a or even before that. We don't need handling, we need listening, we need opportunities and interfaces to submit user based content and contribute to the project.

Meaning there are very few communities like this that can, have a game they enjoyed 12 years ago be resurrected and then do nothing and let it die.

There should be something like periodic QL status meeting with a group of some representatives of community. More than one person. They could meet from time to time e.g. every one month and consult how QL looks like atm and where it shall go to become number 1 shooter in gaming area.

My suggestions for representatives are:
noctis - pro player with huge in-game knowledge and he always give variable suggestions on his comments

xou - he know how community works in the matter of tournaments and it's organization. He could help improve QL in matter of tournament management on QL web as he probably knows the most about what tournament admin needs.

mickzerofive - or someone else from 4SG, it would be good to have representative from Australian community (yea I know we already have noctis)

+ One representative from USA
+ One representative from Russia (dunno who - since it's the biggest community according to QLRanks duel stats)

+ Optionally 1 guy from QLRanks.com
+ One slot for someone who has some idea and want to share it. So there is a possibility to send email to someone and finally before every meeting there is one person picked from the list.

2GD would be also good person but hes personality doesn't fit well to this role. He's too imperious and he might try to eclipse everyone on those meetings. Same with Slasher.

With the right people that would be quite interesting and entertaining. But on the other hand.. if there is no money to invest, there is not much to manage/announce.

There's a community to manage.
Now it's up to a few people to come up with ideas, do them, and produce them themselves.
How about someone from id requesting some movie makers to do tutorials on movement, and having them integrated and hosted on the site?
How about, starting some community action that would attract new players?

There are things to manage, just noone to manage or come up with them.

Manage things like what? Sure, a community manager could gather suggestions and criticism from the community. But does the QL project have enough manpower to get common requested things like a ladder or gtv done? No, and thus nothing will change.
Also I got the impression that most people here think that the QL community = esr + some others. Fact is, most QL players don't even know what esr is and if you let them decide they'll probably vote for a weaker lg and vehicles instead of a refined armor system for example.

There isn't enough man power because there is no money, there is no money, because there are no spenders, there are no spenders because they don't develop shit from requests lists, and they have no plan.
Since they have no plan, they can't manage anything.

Why not try getting community manager, and expanding the community, basing it on the dead quakelive forums? It is available to all, but people somehow get to esr nonetheless.

Don't know why everyone gives a shit about making a point at no trying anything, instead of taking a few examples of posts here and expanding on them in a constructive manner.

Lately I've come to realize, there is really too much people whining, about things. Everything gets a negative tone, everything is a current but crucial life crisis etc.

Everything really need a more positive tone, and someone to say why it would work, instead of why it wouldn't.

heres what ql needs: money. can you give them enough? because than your dreams will come to reality. otherwise nothing will happens.

you can see on qlranks there was 15k duellers in the past few weeks. good part of these should be fake, but even if not that about the number of ppl logs into other games in a hour at peak times.

The whole qlranks thing. Maybe binding the web address in pub games? Maybe talking about it on QL forums, maybe referencing to known people that enjoy quake from other communities to give ranks a shot, and give quake another shot.

Maybe more money comes from that.

I'm not claiming it will, or that everything will magically be perfect. But why not try?

quake development has never been about money, at least before ql.

vanilla q1, q2 and q3 were good games at their release dates, but they got old after 2-3 years like every single game.
What made them fresh were mods, maps, new engines, and all sorts of community-made content, in which id (and money) had nothing to do.

In short, the very community is a much better developer than id, but if the company doesn't realize that then they will have to provide constant updates, but since they don't have the money to do so the game just gets old after the said 2-3 years.
Also this decision was just one of lots of mistakes made by id in ql's development. Maybe if they did things right, the game could be in a whole different state. Remember LoL was much smaller than QL and there are lots of similarities between them; guess which finally won.

At this point I only hope that id releases a proper sdk in a year or 2, when this project will be officially over (which already more or less is. Adding 2 maps from q3 every 2 months is not developing the game really)

It's just sad that q3 has 100x more content than ql, and now you have to pay to access 1% of what we already have.
And lets not even start with q2, probably the most modded game ever, or qw, which is a whole different game right now with ezquake and all that. There's even one person who wasted his life to make and promote a q4 mod.

Nah they can't release it just yet, since QL has something quake games haven't had before.
Integrated and fully developed ingame advertising system ready to support regional adds.

It's a very cool feature, invested in and pricey. Yet without it it's juts another quake game.

Just don't think these two can be decoupled now, or ever.

Only if someone moded quake 3 arena to feel and act just as quakelive does, and then build a site around it with db and centralised interface and server support.

But then again, most people jumped on the wagon originally because QL promised continued development and support by it's home developing studio, which is pretty solid offer. Just not done properly.
