Imo it's not playable with 180-220ms:( I would really love to give you an advice, but there is just no way you can enjoy QL with such high ping, since you can be dead before you know it. I saw high skilled players doing very good with 120-150ish pings, but that's the point when the fun really starts to fade away fast as ping increases further.

yeah i used to play 120ms against a friend, he also had 120ms. it was playable, especially since we had even pings, but still annoying.

im probably not going to be doing myself any favors by playing at 180 lol.

The problem is that the mates in Western Europe are playing against you almost like how they would do if sitting on a lan.
If you spec them you can see how perfectly clean their lagometer is. It's not the ping what matters, but the quality of the connection. The netcode of the games are designed in a way to cope with latency easily (even above 100ms), it's the random factor of the shitty connections where they used to fail.
In 1997 the sub 200ms pinger also had shitty net, just somewhat better, but now it's different.

any idea if playing offense in CTF might not require as much gud ping? In jedi academy(q3 based, rockets/strafe jumping all still there), many offense players can get away with high ping, since it is mostly about movement than aim. maybe the same holds true for ql?

I remember joining a Q3 server in India last year just because curiosity. They were playing quite skilled, perhaps those servers a re still out there.

i think AUS has routing optimized toward the US or something. i get low 200s to euro and 300 in ame, an aus friend gets nearly 400 in euro and 200s in ame.

keep in mind that I live ~400 miles away from chicago. before I moved i'd get 18-22 to chi. before 3 weeks ago i got 50 ms to chi but now somehow its at 80 while i get 75 to toronto.

and having played many a euro pickup with better internet @ 140ms, that 140 felt 3x better than this 80. seriously seems "muddy"

I care more about dodging than aiming so the lower the better for me, my main issue in fights is not that I'm no able to lg my opponent to oblivion but rather just not able to dodge rockets properly, also my playstyle permits me to have crappy aim one day and still beat my opponent.

yeah it is odd I hate lg and rail at 110ms but it's nice at 120-140ms , though the rest feel better at lower ping.

I'm just a aimwhore. :( I try to get as close as possible and fuck people up, disregarding my stack. :C

I tend to play agressive but keep my distance and mess them up with rockets and plasma at a distance where rail would be the optimum weapon.

Isn't there a way to start a server in the Middle East? How many QL players are there?

30~ in my area active , and they'll probably increase with servers, there were some saudi's that tried to donate a server to id but id don't have the man power to run them.

I doub't that was manpower because all you need is an explicit root access to a box with Internet connection and a contract wit the provider:(

Perhaps you could try Cairo? It's on the same backbone halfway to France. Egypt is also connected to Istanbul, so you could perhaps get some players from there too.

egypt = 100 ms , anything outside the gulf is a no go for me also I don't remember the details exactly but I recall talking to sponge about it and he was going on about that the team (of 3 people) was too busy trying to fix the game to run a new set of servers.

120-130 it's possible, it makes me sad but I can adapt and still have some fun, but 200 and I'm getting frustrated and also no joy at all. But I learned online gaming as an LPB sitting on the backbone, so I guess I never really learned to play with home internet:(

Well I've never played low ping except for cs in the past too years (game sucks) and tf2 recently so I learned to sort of adapt.

ql caps timenudge at -20, it doesnt feel laggy, better or worse, kinda hard to notice it tbh. maybe i need to mess around with it more to get what it does.

prediction is the confusing part. i havent played much with this ping, so i cant say for sure, but with rockets it feels like from the time i click to impact that the enemy has enough time to move to the complete other side of the room. so when i shoot, there is far too many possibilities of where he could be. can that really be predicted? :s

Play on that ping for a few months, get back to normal ping and have the most epic rockets ever.

This my rockets in TF2 are crazy at the moment.

First off, learn to spam, even in fights. Eventually you'll get better at predicting your spam shots during a fight.

I know it's hard, I used to play on 150 - 220 back when I had a 56k modem. I played low pingers a lot and eventually started beating them. Mainly because I knew the map well and I could predict there movements during a fight.

also avoid playing vs ppl that wrap. With ur ping, u might end up dead before u even see them.

Still think is impossible for ql. It is too aim heavy and the netcode becomes more random the more u ping, unlike q3 (where u could get used to a certain ping).

i know what your saying about q3 vs ql, i play a q3 based game(JA) at 200s and it feels infinitely better than ql. but then again, i am much more experienced in that game than ql, so maybe its placebo :p. JA also doesnt have any real hit scan weapons, in ql high ping really kills lg, cant track >_<

it's easier to hit rockets at high ping in OSP for some reason although all the hitscan weapons got to utter shit.

you are far above the ping threshold where you can strategize your shots or adjust your playstyle. the MOST ping that is considered playable (never including serious 1v1) is 100, you are at twice at that.

the only way for you to kill anyone at those ping is rl spam, no hitscan weapon is adjustable at that level of ping. you also cant afford even someone with mg to get in close range of you because even they can kill/get you to like 10h from 100/100 if they aim well.

still you are more likely to kill yourself with rl at close range simply because of splash damage when you try to hit the guy, or you will damage yourself alot more then you would with say.. 50 ping.

distance is your friend no matterwhat tier

actually its a really good training in order to learn good decicionmaking, and playing with more sense for gameplay, because it forces you into playing creative, and make thoughts about how to make situations run in your favor, without going into direct 1on1 battles. of course it forces you sometimes into defens, which will make you very predictable. but you will learn very good when situations run in your favor, and you will know when they make their mistakes, and you can go for it.

I can't say much for playing with high ping in QuakeLIVE but back when I was an HPB in Quake 2 I did well by playing very defensivly and chipping away at my opponent.

-Keep your distance / know where your enemy is at all times.
-Use rockets and grenades to keep your enemy in certain areas of the map.
-If you get in a close fight make sure you have a close range weapon out.

The other thing I did was just get use to predicting my shots(not sure if this works in QL). The best way to do this is just play with a buddy and work on railing him mid-air.

I think playing on high ping is great for practicing prediction. Try to find a stable ping and learn the distance you have to lead your shots. Rail is working quite well after a while. Rockets too, when you are used to the delay.
Its more fun on lower tier servers where people are usually not able to exploit the ping advantage to rape you.

Also adjusting the playstyle from +attack to +back (depending on gametype) might help.
