John Carmack's Keynote from Quakecon 2011 mentions Quake 5 is not planned and merely speculation. Let us contemplate the possibilities so that our collective thoughts may be known in the future despite the dreams of the present. What would you like to see in Quake 5? What ideas can be taken from previous Quake titles for renewal and improvement? What ideas can be taken from other popular, successful games? What is required to attract a large number of players and retain their interest? What is essential to make it the “definitive FPS of the decade” and potentially the greatest in history?
Edit
I think it’s time for the Quake series to return to its origins in a single-player campaign. Core mechanics should be incorporated uniformly so players are familiarized with the game, making transitions into multiplayer and other potential facets less daunting. The campaign should offer a different experience overall without being completely irrelevant to other aspects of the game.
Theme
Synthesize the concepts of Quake 1 and Quake 3 to shape a campaign with exceptional capacity. The mystery surrounding the Vadrigar of the arena eternal can be the foundation to build on, fused with Quake 1’s immersive and dark atmosphere. Unravel the mystery of the Vadrigar as a higher power, summoning the most capable warriors in the universe to combat an impending threat to all worlds. Revisit the theme of Armageddon present in Quake 1 on a grandiose scale. Possibilities with such a project are endless.
Ideas
- Easy, medium, hard, and nightmare difficulties.
- Dark levels, enemy designs, and effects. (Quake 1 horror style with blood and gore.)
- Weapons, items, abilities, and upgrades unique to single player. (Reintroduce items from past Quake titles like the grappling hook.)
- Dual wield. (Axe and gauntlet. Enough said.)
- Varied objectives including puzzles, escorts, rescues, retreats, infiltrations, etc.
- Tutorial introductions to acquaint players with core mechanics.
- Maintain traditional Quake 1 do or die fun, exterminating hordes of enemies.
- Technological battle suit customary to military forces that finally explains the ability to defy physics via strafe jumping and similar feats.
- Advanced A.I. (Mannerisms, abilities, strategies, cooperation, etc.)
- Graphics worthy of the era in computer gaming.
- Achievements.
Working on multiplayer and co-op next. I'll keep my ideas updated. I'll start compiling collective ideas afterwards.
dedicated servers
demo repository for viewing other players POVs from various games you played
something that makes it different/unique from the previous quakes (i can't really think of anything however)
in-game chat system similar to sc2 battle.net or w/e
serverside commands to enable/disable airstrafing,crouchsliding,etc
a combination of new and old maps (from various quakes)
make the singleplayer compatible with speedrunning (no invisible walls etc)
an interesting single player.
i could probably have move but i'm not really bothered thinking about it too much at the moment
