Edit: actually, it depends on where you are now. If you are 1700+ ELO QL player - play QL exclusively. If you are already in one of Master leagues in SC2 - play SC2. Otherwise, play both games. :)

Concentrate how? Do you actually intend to play tournaments? If not, it doesn't matter, and you shouldn't care. If you are trying to make a living out of it, your only option is Starcraft. However, I seriously doubt that you have the time necessary to compete on any sort of respectable level in Starcraft.

No need to read between the lines, just read the line "compete on any respectable level". Doesn't mean world no.1, but more like high enough skill to receive cash prizes. That takes A LOT of practice.

Heartl3ss IMO you're better off with Quake Live. This is because you're better in it and there's less competition than in SC2. There will be plenty of tournaments at least for one more year, and even if the QL tournament scene dies after that (which I doubt will happen completely anyway), the FPS skills and competitive experience gained can relatively easily be transferred to a different FPS game.

I didn't say that he would have to do that to be the best, that's just to be on par with top-level players. If he's not playing a game to attend tournaments, then he shouldn't take the game very seriously.

It's possible, but you need both the talent, and the practice. It was easier when SC2 was new, since the BW pros hadn't moved over. If you don't know much about SCBW pro houses, they literally just play pro players all day long, discuss strategies, and watch replays. In addition to the support of a team, they also have coaches (who used to be pros) that helps you to keep on track if you lose your way, and to support you as you go.

Reading Boxer's biography can give you an idea of the kind of practice that you're up against on the highest level. The only foreigners who have come close (and they've played for many years) are Ret, Idra, and Nony. Nony didn't have the discipline for enough practice, Ret refused to play ZvZ (and then got raped out of Korea by Z in Courage), and Idra just doesn't have the talent or patience to be any better than a B player, despite how much he practices.

How much do you know in the game? It's certainly more enjoyable when you can appreciate the creativity of a play, or the insane macro/micro needed to pull something off. Also, it's always more enjoyable to watch while you have people to talk to that are watching it - much like GTV.

IRC is great, but another alternative (dunno if you use reddit), is Barcraft. There are tons of these events popping up all over the world now, and there may be some near you. Honestly, I enjoy SCBW/SC2 far more as a spectator sport.

Stephano is most likely the most talented player. Just practices a few hours per day yet is quite possibly the best foreign player. He has an unbelievable nack for the game.

Play some Tribes Ascend, then you will forget both QL and SCII instantly. The game is only in Closed Beta and yet allready is more fun than QL and SCII combined. One can only immagine what awesome game it will be once clan-features, private servers and leagues/ladders will be integrated.

Fighting while trying to hold your speed constant trough skiing/jetpacking, is much more difficult than dodging some rockets in a hallway. Tribes is about prediction and timing your shots while in Quake it's more about positioning and item-control.

Did you actually play the game?
It's clunky as hell, an avg flag cap takes about 30s.
Projectiles are a joke, inheritance is fucked ( surfing backward shooting at an attacker, projectile is terribly slow due to your movement speed negated to the base projectile speed, not talking about what a mess it is to actually try doing midair when strafing left/right )
Pay2win bullshit to unlock better classes when most people are pathfinder/jugg/ranger/soldier. You don't wanna pay ? Fine, enjoy grinding 30 hours to unlock one of the top classes, oh wait you thought it was over ? 40k to 50k required to unlock all the perk ( aka what the classe should be when you unlock them ) at about 3000xp perhour.
Balance between weapons is retarded, the game is so slow they had to remove most of the hitscan weapons because projectiles faggot and heavy classes were getting raped my light classes with hitscan smg.
Speed is inconsistent, having to rely on slope to get speed, if you get slowed down in the middle of the map you can just kill yourself and start your run all over again.
1v1 fight are pretty much who can stay longer in the air while spamming AoE rocket/nade on the first dude that run out of jetpak energy.

The game is flawed by design, appealing to the target audience of TF2 retards giving them the illusion of a deeper gameplay.
I mean what the fuck, I watched a fragmovie of tribes vengeance a few days ago, and even they had 4+ weapons, plus a grappling hook to change direction without losing speed.

Did I mention the clueless community ? Don't think it matters at this point. I just wanna unlock the sniper rifle ( which is hitscan btw ) so maybe I could have some fun while playing this game with my friends.

Why u so mad? I did't experience any of the stuff you mentioned untill now. For me as a beginner the game is fun as hell, maybe if you played T1/T2 for some years (I only played them for a really short time) you have a different opinion/view on the game but if you are new to Tribes the game is really fun and enjoyable.

If fighting for you is about who runs out of energy first, then you obviously didn't understand the concept. Also you like grappling-hook, really? It was the worst invention in the whole Tribes-Series (as was Vengeance as a game).

Pay2win, oh please! You have all 4 classes, that are needed for a newb, in less than a week (that being Soldier, Ranger, Pathfinder and Juggernaut). You have a Capper, a Defender and two Allround-Classes to play with. When you know what role you like to take on the battlefield (takes quite some games to learn everything) you allready have enough tokens to buy yourself the class(es) that are suited best for the task (if you like to cap you go for Jumper, if you like to defend the flag you go for Doombringer). Unlocking the skills also doesn't take long, approximately one week per class and with shared-xp implemented the whole thing will get much faster. Also the Beta-Pack (29,99$) is very fair (5 "expensive" classes + 1 "cheap", 30 day XP boost, VIP-Status) and you would pay for a good game that is released normally (like a Quake 5 or Doom 4) anyway, wouldn't you?

T:A is my first tribe, and from the 30~hours I put into it and coming from cpm, it's pretty dull gameplay wise.

You can't deny most of the combat being ridiculous. Otherwise we haven't played the same game, or you're still stuck in the noob tier ( rank 5 and below ).
Every fight ever : first dude jetpack up, try shooting at the dude below, the other nerd react, goes in the air, first dude energy runs up, use his monstrous skill to aim at the ground while the first guy falls on.
Works for every base classes that represent 80pc of the playerbase ; Soldier, Ranger, Pathfinder, Jugg. I might have seen about a total of 5 dudes using the pistol or shotty as sol/pth and missing terribly while I was falling in a predicatable way.
I don't know what to blame, players being shit or the game pace.
Also, vehicles. LOL. Take a tank, stay on flag, rack 20kills before getting destroyed.

I still stay on my pay2win stance. At the current state of the game, everyone plays the base 4 classes ( and probably only 2-3 for most people ), you think spending 30 bucks on a beta is worth it ( keyword here is BETA, who the fuck pays for unfinished shit? ). You get the infiltrator, go fuck up their main generator in 2s, doesn't matter if it's level 4. OP Pistol, OP SMG, OP Nade, your basic glass canon. Most people doesn't even know how the class works and how the invisiblity works ( burns out 1energy/sec btw, you can just go in a corner and fap to midget porn ).
Doombringer can just place barriers at the flag cap, techi can place turrets with aimbots, sentinel place claymores and just go snipe somewhere else.
Jumper has a trustpack which allow to go faster, makes him a better capper than pthfinder.
It's just an example of how superior these shit are, and in the upcoming month, when a stabe playerbase will have unlocked a few classes with OP perks. Most beginners will have to RELY exclusively on booster pack and gold buying because they will get wrecked learning the game with gimped classes.
SUUUUURE you can play 30 hours to get enough token and buy a classe you want. SUUUURE you don't have to pay. But-but, if you buy the booster pack you would only have to spend a third of the time to get everything.
This is MMO bullshit hooking the player for jew golds, and once the game comes out there will be even more bullshit ( lol at people truly thinking there will be only skins to buy )
Even looking at QL, in comparison to this game, is a saint. At least it just pisses you off with a 15s ad and restrict you from playing some maps. But doesn't give you an ingame advantage like this crap.

Off with my ranting, but you'd have to be terribly clueless ( or just terrible at fps in general ) to find this kind of game to be enjoyable.
Maybe you'll have fun for a few hours, but if you try to master some aspect of gameplay elements, you'll find yourself pretty much throttled.

Ok sorry buddy, I tought you were a Tribes veteran with good knowledge of the game and it's core features and that you were comparing T:A to T1/T2. Instead you are a Quake Player with almost no knowledge of the game who compares it to CPMA/QL which both are totally different games (they don't resemble tribes in any way, form or shape). My bad.

I'm past level 9 right now (still pretty noob) but I allready can see that most of the negative stuff you are mentioning is totally wrong.

1. Fights in T:A on noob tiers are about two guys flying high in the air, then dropping down to the ground like bricks and then desperately trying to dodge each others projectiles. As soon as you get a hang of the mechanics the way you fight changes a lot and you start manouvering around your opponent and trying to get into a better position to line up your shot while trying to stop the opponent from doing exactly the same. If you are a bit familiar with with the jetpack/skiing you won't ever be bound to the ground and not moving because of no energy or lack of momentum.

2. Strangely enough I can't see 16 out of 20 players on a server I join, playing Sol/Rngr/Pth/Jug, which would represent your claim that 80% of T:A's players play only one of those 4 classes. I see a lot of Doombringes, Jumpers, Sentinels, Infiltrators and Enginiers. The only clases I don't see often are Scramblers, Raiders and Brutes. But those 3 are probably the more difficult and unpopular ones in Pub-Servers.

3. You obviously are only looking at the loadouts the different classes have. In a ingame-fight a Infiltrator is screwed as soon as he is spotted by a opponent (or revealed by a Scrambler). A enginier can build up turrets around the flag (which btw. only do so little dmg), but what use are the towers when your opponents manage to sneak into your gen-room and kill it? Nothing because the turrets and also the shields simply won't work. Sentinel can place mines on the flag, but if the other team's players know what they are doing, they will send a Scrambler in first who will clean out the whole area before the actual capper rushes in and is gone in less than 1 second.

4. The tank thingy. That's where I lost hope in you. This tactic will work on exactly one map (Drydock) and with only noobs on your opponents side. If the other side has a Infiltrator stealthing near the tank and a doombringer locking onto it with his saber-launcher the tank will be dead in less than 2 seconds (Infi grenade sticks to it and deals tons of damage and the rockets are devestating against it because it can't dodge them).

5. No there won't be only Skins to buy, look at the LoL Store to see what will be comming at T:A players. Skins, Perks (probably), XP/Token Boosters and Servers will be in there, probably there will be new classes coming out from time to time. The classes have fixed loadouts, so you won't be able to buy uber-guns for real money.

I thought about advertising for it on these forums -- it's a superb game that not enough people know about. A fair amount of skill involved too, especially in duel.

I played Cube and Sauerbraten a couple of years ago, but somehow I lost interest in the game itself :/ The two simple game engines were and are still interesting in the way of creating a level with minimal ressources and looking great too!

Minecraft can be compared somehow, due to the approach of user created content, but somehow neither Cube or Sauerbraten didn't share the public success of Minecraft.

I wonder if Aard did follow up in the past years with a third related project, creating a minimal 3d engine? Also I wonder if you heard about makke and if you know what he's doing nowadays :)!

If you are looking for LOTS of massive tournament support and a possible chance at making a living at it (if you give up every other aspect of your life for the game), then SC2. More people actually give a damn about it than Quake these days.

If you simply prefer a hardcore, intense, skill-focused FPS, stick with Quake. If you simply want the best competitive RTS on the market today, SC2.
