Defrag/race seems like a pretty natural addition now. Has anyone converted Q3 defrag maps to work offline in QL?

it's so strange that when I saw it's from Fudge, that was my very first thought: it must be trolling. I remember I was even looking at the lack of postprocess on the images, but I "convinced" myself that he could simply disable that one.

So the reason there are no custom maps is because ID doesn't want to get into legal trouble... somtehing like that right?

I mean honestly who is going to sue ID for hosting a custom quake map?

Why not put custom maps into the game if they have permission from the map creator?

We had this debate a zillion times in closed beta, we provided a dozen of workarounds, but it was like beating a dead horse...

One of them was when I suggested that they should get the lawyers to work out some kick ass agreement what every mapper/modder would have to sign before making anything for QL. They would have to give every rights to id, agree not to reclaim the rights in any case in the future, and also only use QL assests and nothing else (only the textures, sounds, etc disributed with QL), and the agreement would also protect id from possible wrongdoings ... you get the picture... So if you want to make something, you must sign that shit....

That was never the problem. The problem was that people might submit things that they didn't own, and id would be liable. No, an agreement can't get around this, since the person in question never had the rights to the content.

most probably id has the rights to add every ra3 arena to QL, since they have been adding them steadily for about a year or more. Same thing with wcp maps as of last patch.

why don't they add all of them already? Imagine weekly patches with 1 or 2 ra3 arenas and one wcp map, even better if they manage to get osp maps.

edit: there are 2 more maps that id could add right now if they want to, made by yellack (designer of "purgatory"), and of course winters edge and space camp should be added to the game permanently.

afaik they also have wcp14 from Scancode (our saviour, who made wcp9;]).
I think the reason they add maps at such a slow rate is that they want to "milk out" the most from the resources they have.

they have enough maps already.

Hundreds of ra3 arenas, 2 unreleased propietary maps (winters edge and space camp), the 2 maps made by yellack, and wcp14.
Who knows what else they can release right now, but that's more than enough to do at least monthly patches with 3 maps for years.

It's not only about supply but it's also about demand. Maps we don't miss or want, doesn't have much value like the desired wcp14 for the CTF-er crowd.
Dropping out all the goods at the start what the community made in a decade long period was insane. But there were many others like: not adding the nobrainer custom skins and tags for the facebook-er COD kids. Youngsters love to customize their online look, and because everything is on a big online database, it could be done easily like how they did it in Minecraft for example.

We could list all the mistakes for several pages , but the bottom line is that they can only sell things now what the remaining community would buy, and we won't "eat" everything:)

id doesn't need pemission from the map creator. everything made in the idtech3 engine is property of id software. that includes maps, mods, etc.

good thing no maps have custom textures, right?

Not true - only things that specifically rely on id content.

It's fun for a little while, but I'm not really in the mood to risk getting banned for it.

This. I don't understand why everybody is going to all of this trouble when we can all torrent q3 and have CPMA set up in 15 minutes.

Because it's a different game I guess. Need to redo config, get used to different graphics/netcode etc. 15 minutes for that is very optimistic.
