48 concurrent players (plus some active servers it always fail to show) i know its not a mindblowing number but, not that bad for a dead game on a third world zone :*
I hear the Brazilian Quake player base is pretty big, but they do not have their own server so they usually use the Argentinian ones or Chilean servers. Not saying that Argentinians / Chileans don't play Quake, just not as much as Brazilians.
QL once had Italian servers, but unfortunately they were only used for some LAN tournaments and the server providers disabled them after the games. I agree that they need to put in more servers though, especially since some providers are actually willing to give them some.
I frequently played on those servers. First they had bad routing because it was like Spain for me (50-60ms), then it went down to NL-ish 33-37ms. I never had problems there like what we had/have on the Swedish servers.
I remember that players from Italy were sad/mad about the end of that service.
according to qlranks, chile's the #10 country by number of players, with a total of 1296.
Argentina comes in #13 place with 927, and brazil #14 with 766. Also colombia has 111 players, uruguay 74, ecuador 17, paraguay 16 and peru 14.
per capita Chile has a lot more QL players than the other southamerican countries, but that's been the tendency since quake1 really.
I didn't expect Argentina to have some many players, and it's surprising that brazil doesn't even reach a 1000.

I heard that raynor wanted to go to quakecon this year. Guess he won't after he got caught cheating.
it's very rare to see players from niche communities achieving podium finishes, especially in a game or activity that takes a lot of skill, that's been played for more than 15 years (duel) and that it's almost impossible to practice with the best players.
First of all it's absolutely true that you are as good as your scene is, meaning that without proper competition it's almost impossible to get to the NA or European level. That's why the only champion material SA players play games in which lag isn't an issue, such as nfs (would prefer a proper sim with a lot more players, and not arcade physics against 12 year old boys but still) and carom3d since you mostly challenge yourself, sc and so on. If a fps player wants to get serious he'd have to live where the best players are, but in the end that makes him a representative of that location instead of his home country anyway.
Particularly about fps games the only exception I know is Mibr in CS because the game was massive in brazil and it had LAN support. I don't know any other case of podium finishes achieved by a SA player in an worldwide tournament, or top8 for that matter.
Then they have to go to international events, naturally get destroyed at their first event and try again. That alone requires a huge level of dedication considering the lack of sponsors.
I think there will never be a podium finish achieved by a SA player in a quake live international event, considering that if a player decides to live in Europe for 3 years he won't be representing that location anymore.
I only won 15 bmx trophies, got afrolegends to 1/2 of his hp bar, one bafta nomination, earned 5 figures a year at 22 years old (actually that ended up being more than what he really earned lol), only manage 2 successful businesses in my mind, worked near silicon graphics but not quite there, and I write 4 posts a day.
but I finished high school and didn't steal all those "achievements" from 2 other guys.

Incorrect info, the playerbase is 99% from Argentina. Brazilians doesnt enjoy pinging 70+ and the couple that connect are kicked cause theyre mostly aimboters.
