Pick up a Zalman clip or an external microphone, that way you don't have to sift through the "gaming gear" shit, since when it comes to audio, you're better off doing with Sennheiser or Audio Technica.

I thought of this, but I don't like having a standalone mic + headphones. It does suck that almost all headphone/mic combos are shitty gamer-oriented products (and even though I'm using them for games, I don't want them, because they fucking suck)...

Don't buy a pair of headphones with a microphone attached, just use an external one, as Gillz previously said. The quality of a lot of this gaming gear just doesn't suffice if you want to use them for anything else. You should also consult the several 'audiophile' (lol) headphone forums around, on the other hand everyone's listening experience is different and often enough reviews don't satisfy me with standardized technical detail. There is a good headphone buying guide from head-fi, Although I hear that head-fi's own reviews and even some of their forum post moderation is swayed by their sponsorship deals.

With good research maybe you can find something similar to this guide, personally, although it is good advice to go with Sennheiser as a default, I would not settle for anything less than a HD-580 or HD25-1 mk 2. For your price range, or just above it rather, you can't go wrong with the soundstage of the Sony MDR-V6. If you can afford to shell out a bit more, do, your ears will appreciate it, as price really makes a difference in anything 'below the hd-600 range' :)

What kind of external mic should I get, though? I really hate clip-ons, but I don't have much desk room for a stand. Thanks for teh infos, though.

A friend of mine, as a late birthday present, is going to help me pay for some headphones whenever I finally find some. I'm not sure how much he's going to pay, but it'll help no matter what.

I couldn't give you good microphone buying advice, as I don't consider myself to be well informed enough in that department. I would say that if your friend were to help you out enough, although a bit of an ask, to assert yourself in getting a pair of sennheiser hd25-1 II 's. Sound isolation is second to none and because of their build quality they will last you a life time.

It's pretty much in my price range, and has been suggested by a couple people. If I end up getting an actual job that gets me at least some money in a relatively constant and reliable flow, I'll look at something more expensive. Until then, $70 is pretty much my upper limit.

About ~2-3 $, and do the job just fine. Don't laugh; Hama-stuff is utter garbage, but not this one. Loud and clear, even from 2 meters or so.

Actually pretty good.

I used it for everything (music and movies too) all the time, for more than a year and I was quite surprised how well it performed - and I'm being somwhat audiophile.
For this price (35-40 $), it's an excellent choice, not just for gaming but for everything.

The clamp force could be smaller but you can loosen it if you're not feeling comfortable with it. After a strech, it becomes better, you can use it for hours without serious issues.

Semi-open circumaural design.
A good 100 hours long warmup period is needed to achieve the true sound of this thing but it sounds ok even before this procedure.
The low tones and bass has good depth, even a bit too much. The mid-range is balanced and warm, the highs are quite crisp while being a bit too forward.
Better dynamics and details than the HD 662, medium isolation - but it's semi-open, so no wonders here.

The cable is really long and flexible while being thick and sturdy. Golden plated jack (and a 6.3 mm converter, gold plated too) at the end of the road. This is how a cable should be.

Having a seperate sound card makes things even better. More sound detail and a bit dampened lows and highs making the soundscape more balanced.

I didn't mod it yet. The AKG ear cushions are expensive, but I'm planning on a sock-mod for the earpads - if I can fight my laziness.

Overall, I'm quite satisfied with it for an all-around choiche and it's CERTAINLY worth the bucks I invested in. You also got a nice carrying pouch for the price, too.

The best bang for the buck would be something from Superlux. They are as good as headphones sometimes 3-4 times more expensive.

Their best closed-ear model is probably HD660, however i doubt it can do well without headphone amplifier.
So you may want to take a look at older HD662, or HD661. But better if you can live with semi-open design, then e.g. you can pick the most popular model from their lineup, HD668B.
There's also well acclaimed Samson SR850, which is re-branded headphones made by Superlux.

If you really want an all in one solution you can get the Sennheiser pc151 but the sound quality will be miles away from proper headphones.
