I pay to support id. I rarely play atm due to irl stuff but I hope QL sticks around. Even if all the subscription features are subpar, they still deserve money for hosting the servers.

I payed because i wanted to play on premium maps and to be able to connect to any server. But now as i pretty much dont have internet anymore, i wont buy premium, unless a miracle happens and i will have internet and a wish to start dueling again

i bought pro in the first year to support id, but i rarely play nowadays and subs are really just useful if you are involved in some kind of community.

i just want to play a quick match now and then without preparing for 2 hours in some pickup channel so standard is enough for me

From what I've heard some servers are hosted for free by local providers but still id needs to have some revenue to keep the game up and pay these two guys.

i like the game alot, so i don't mind paying 50€ a year, and then to have all the features it offers.

I bought pro so I can occasionally spawn server in pickups if there is no other pro and invite folks, to get things done faster.

PS: offtopic, but /invite name console command would be awesome, so we'd not have to deal with the horrible friendlist.

if id cared about ql they would have made community made mods/maps implementation possible, q3 was nothing without OSP, and all the maps, even dm6 was shitty before prodm6 (or whatever it was called)

I pay for the maps, spawning servers (which I do not a lot, but a decent amount), to support ID so maybe QL can stay up longer, and the ability to join any server I want without hesitation unless it's password protected.

I understand for some people the deal isn't worth it, especially if they had been playing all these maps and more for free years ago, but for me $60 for a year is fine.

I think we, the community, create the problem ourselves. We think posting links to ESR in the QL forum once or twice or talking about ESR or tdmpickup on stream is enough, but:

- Many newcomers use quakelive.com as the ONLY QL related platform.
- I don't know if QL shows links to ESR or leveluptv or irc chans like tdmpickup. If they do, it's hard to find. People aren't even looking, they just want to look at the server browser and BAM! Action!
- We as a community keep whining about having no newcomers but at the same time we are freakin closed up! We're just too 1337 to see the problem!

If you payed for a premium or pro account and you want others to do the same, play! more! public! And play PREMIUM public! If any newcomers will pay, it's because they see there is actually something going on on premium servers!

They won't see it. There's a limit - maximum 3 premium servers can be shown to a standard user.

Many times you see premium duels and small CA servers, but the standard players don't see all of them.

Of course this is not to bug them too much with the "go pro" window popping up. But still gives them bad idea of how populated premium servers are.

Oh yeah, and I'm pro. Killer feature: inviting 3 standard players to any premium server. 2 of us = full server.

I pay for it so I can use everything. I don't have to have someone spawn a specific map to play etc... If I want to spawn a private server with my own rules, I can. Then I can just invite my friends instead of having to play with randy's who either: A) Cheat or B) are complete dicks. That's why.

Times have changed, everything's in the web, QL doesn't work as Q3 did and we need id Software to continue to work on this, which they won't without our money. For community stuff, donations are actually some kind of business model in these times. It works, you just have to ask for it -- just offer a paypal donations button or flattr or something.

I cant find any duel match at 5:00 am and it becomes harder and harder to find a match at all in ql. The community is decreasing and thats a fact!

atleast i know a dead project when i see one. with the way the dev's have been handling this game since its inception, it shows no signs of success in the future, and sadly the quake series as a whole will probably die with QL thanks to their poor management.

i payed around 100-125$ last year, just to support the game... but i wont make this mistake again. its not about the game not developed (afterall in terms of QL some progress being made), its the direction they take... there is some well known issues, yet they spend our money on useless shit. new maps? new gamemodes? useless cvars? and so on.... when my subs run out im gonna just accept the fact i wont be able to play aero and toxi anymore (not a big loss), and make sure i dont spend a single dime until theres a radical change in developers mind about whats important and until i dont see they working on those issues really hard i wont even spare a single cent again thats for sure.

1. I don't think it's right to use their servers without giving anything in return.

3. To encourage development.
4. To prevent the infrastructure from collapsing due to lack of funds.

actually, they havent been actively developing QL for a while now, so its highly unlikely that youll see any worthwhile features being added in the near future (gtv, anticheat, lan support, etc.). at this point, with the help of your money, theyre simply doing the absolute minimum necessary with the occasionally premium pak updates to keep it from completely going offline.

It all boils to what you consider worthwhile and what you don't. It also appears that you opinion on the matter is very different from that of id.
I'm fine with new maps, cvars and gamemodes. That's some new stuff I'm gonna enjoy.
I'm happy they don't put efforts on an anti-cheat because that's just wasting money. If you make an anti-cheat you need the resources to maintain it. They would spend all their time doing that, only for the free hacks. Developing it is probably out of question anyway since it's an enormous job.
I'm not sure what GTV is but aren't streamers doing exactly that job?
I guess LAN support could be cool for homemade competitions. I'm not sure that's enough of a demand to develop it but it seems like a nice idea. I don't think any match played on unmonitored LAN could ever make its way to QL's "main" servers though : not a good idea security wise.
The things I want the most are bugfixes (the glitchbooting at the end of matches on crowded servers...) and serverside demos. I have hope.

yeah, ignorance is definitely bliss in this case. i say this because it seems like you're not too sure about alot of things missing from this game. ID is definitely taking advantage of clueless players like you who havent experienced playing q3 before. im sure if ive rarely / never played q3 before, id be supporting ql to the end just as much as you and a bunch of other noobs are. in all reality, the effort shown by ID towards ql is quite frankly an insult, and doesnt do the q3 community justice at all. but to each his own

Honestly it was mostly out of pity and/or charity to id software.

The huge mess/mistake of opening up the project to the public without crucial elements in place like private servers or a suitable backend spelled doom for QL within a a year or two (and a year or two later it is dead in NA, for a clanner). So i just got one year of Pro as a way to say thanks for trying anyways. It was the only game I played from 2008-2011 and it was great. I would re sub in a heartbeat if some sort of competitive team scene were to ever materialize in NA again but I'm quite sure that's long gone now. It sucks =/ I was ready to play QL for a real long time subbing every year for w.e amount it was... but without a scene whats the point? Paying to launch duel / ca servers to play randoms isn't worth subbing to me, and its also not Quake to me.

I pay for premium because I played Q3 for all these years, and the few extra bucks per year I can really deal with. QL has given me 1.5 months of playtime - that is at least worth a few bucks per year. Stop bashing QL - if you do not want to pay for it, don't. If you want to support it, do so.

I recently bought pro (which sounds weird for a casual gamer like me, I know) because :

1) I had enough of dm6 and I want to play premium content.
2) I can spawn a premium server and toss invites to buddies (I add people to my friendlist without much discrimination, but it seems to work out). That's why I bought pro instead of premium, otherwise I'd never play premium content at all if you don't count getting getting 30-0-ed by duellers.
3) I can spectate duels with top players whenever I want without having to rely on streams with bizarre settings and stuff. These servers are rarely full, that's the only upside of not having too many premium/pro subscribers I guess.
4) The low amount of premium/pro subscribers is still a big downside of the game, so I did what I could on my scale.
5) I think it wouldn't hurt to support Quakelive and allow it to live as long as possible.
6) I can't say if it's worth it or not worth it in an objective way, but 48 euros a year isn't that much of a pain anyway.

If I was a casual player, there would be no reason to pay with todays content and activity, as you would not get to play the premium maps anyway. Hint: There is a problem there! :)

Part form the obvious lack of content (GTV, release maps that already exist? etc) and not dividing the scene up with maps. My biggest wish is that they release a anticheat so we can enjoy our online based leagues more.. Not even having or updating anticheat at this moment is a big issue.
