couldnt agree more.. with all the constant switching you cant see how people play, what their tactics are, how they build up, defend, attack, control areas and powerups... most of the game is lost really... its a problem in tdm but not so big as in ctf..

i really cant believe after so much time were still watching games in such a stupid way...

you miss a lot of good action that way, example= flag carrier gets killed, he respawnes you don't know what happened or see the action/missing the scrimmage and the resulting cap/return

From what I have seen so far its been an exciting tourney, its a shame I had to decide between watching nvc and disrepute or zoot but I will be watching the VOD's either way.

i really dont like the idea of dreamhack anymore, if what u are making them out to be is the correct one. imo, dreamhack and theparty is about the same thing: sustaining player with a LAN and tournaments.

after all, dreamhack was to begin with only about the LAN experience, but due to big audience both online and on spot they have evolved to something more. still, doesnt mean they have to turn their backs on their routes, only because the opportunity has presented itself.

it's true Dreamhacks, Quakecons and other LANs are a bit weird right now, with separate sections and all that. Thing is those are the biggest ones that still feature QL on its "Pro" tournaments and also are the only opportunities "we" have to advertise the game, hence it wouldn't be nice to lose them because of lackluster CTF or TDM tournaments.

I know this CTF event peak viewers will be a lot more than the current 450, but even 2000 it's terrible. As for TDM there's the experience of the last 2 tournaments at Dreamhack, which is probably the reason why that gametype won't be played in the next one.

I like both gametypes more than duel actually, but duel is the only viable one for big events.

definitly agree, duel must be the core of quake at "offical e-sports" tournaments. even so, that shouldnt stop teammodes from appearing at less serious events, as long as theres a large enough community to sustain.

imo, it doenst need to be high in applications to be "successful". just look at the qw tourney at DH 2010 (or whenever it was), 50 people in the audience that are making sounds for 500. ofc, supporting a small community as qw's wont be progressive in the end, but its stuff like that which makes DH =PP

as for The Party i can only hope they choose to make another teammode tournament that can bring the more "casual" community together, rather than the super seriouses coollers.

it doesn't say anything because you are comparing apples and oranges. That probably was an online cup.

Fact is online viewers prefer watching duel over ctf and tdm, and by a huge margin. Add to that duel requires 1/4 less resources to be present in events and it ends up in being a way more healthy mod to pick for the current "big 3" (quakecon and 2 dhs).

As for other events such as UGC or "the party", I hope they feature ctf and tdm, even to the point of not including duel.

I agree to duel is fun watching aswell. But watching same players over and over again for every event is too much for me atleast.

yeah, so far games have been much better than in all TDM events last year.

I also see some potential for CTF, but reaching TDM is simply not enough. Duel still brings at least 2x viewers, it's way easier to organize, without begging people to attend and all that, but even it struggles against other games that might take its spot.

Hopefully CTF gets a second chance with better prizes, for example UGC. If it works then it might earn a spot at one of the big 3 (which were like six 2 years ago), for that it would have to surpass tdm by a wide margin, and also duel considering how much more effort it requires to organize and host in comparison to duel.

In short, the only problem with CTF is viewers. I think TDM had 3 chances and it didn't end up well in comparison to duel, so it's only up to CTF and also to Nations TDM, which is the other team based gametype that could be somewhat successful in one or two LAN events.

IMO the TDM community dropped the ball on the TDM tournaments last year. Some of it rallied for the TDM tourney at DHS. But when it came to the followups at QCon and DHW they scattered and we mostly saw incomplete rosters and obvious mix teams of duel players and for the most part, lackluster games as a result.

It's hard for people to take it serious when the teams turnout is that weak. All respect to the people who did rally though.

HoQ Leagues had how many, 46 teams trying to get in? CTF didn't even fill the 40 spots available. CB OC has 51 registered TDM teams as of now.

I don't like how there's a ~20 minutes break between each and every map. That's really annoying and completely ruins any feeling of excitement.
The admin(s) should force teams to play their matches more fluidly.

I can think of one game in particular which annoyed me the most when it was 3 maps and they wanted breaks between map and at the third map they said 'rokenpause' and it endedup they didnt ready up before 20 min... Afaik we didnt delay in our team (or only for good reasons and not a consequent amount of time). We even accepted to ready up quickly without warmup to play the final. We were so rusty :(

I dunno if it's lack of interest or lack of advertisement for the tournament or both.

The viewer numbers were very disappointing, the coverage wasn't as good as we're used to from duel and TDM and as you can see in this thread, no discussions emerged and hardly anybody cared about the tournament.

Its probably a number of things, most of which advertising i think, the draft cup a few weeks ago had 4streamers and nice numbers iirc

I would like to thank all the teams for showing up and providing great games for the spectators/viewers to watch.

Zoot for providing the stream and shoutcasting the games. These should provide for really good VOD's when he gets them sorted.

Mousestar for helping out and taking pictures/interview throughout the event.

It wasn't all perfect, but for a first time event I think it was a nice experience to see the good and the bad situations. Whenever I could sit down to watch the games, I was really happy that the players were enjoying themselves playing the matches, as you could tell from the noises/screams during the matches :D

I have learned a lot on how to handle most situations that might occur during such a tournament with set up PC's. I had like zero experience and in just four days (with 5 hours sleep total) I learned so much.

I've got a lot of positive feedback from the players and also a lot of points to look out for in the future, if I may provide a follow up event on this. The Party crew was really pleased with the event and they want to talk to me about it being included in the future, but I doubt I will do such a tournament again without at least one or two dedicated people to help out.

I am really disappointed in some narrow sighted comments/replies, because apparently people expected this to be a professional event off the bat. I think the coverage was great for the lack of people to provide it (I had no time to do any coverage) and we will have a great content package available (about 250 official match demos, VOD's with shoutcast and picture galleries).

I think people should not forget what this event really was. It wasn't meant to be on par with Dreamhack, UGC or Quakecon. If it would be, I think I would be the best tournament admin/organizer in the world, but I am not :)

The teams/spectators/players enjoyed themselves as far as I could tell and we had a great time hanging out. I've met a lot of players I have never met in real life before and I think that is something quite special for me, something I will keep in memory the rest of my life. If you have played CTF for over 10 years like me and you meet all these players who you have been playing against in all that time, it really gets an emotional touch to it.

I hope the overall enjoyment and experience was good. I am pleased with the result and I've done all I could to get the games finished up on Sunday. the 2-2 in the final was the worst possible scenario that could still happen in combination with Gunzoids flight. If DP or Gunzoids would have won with 3 maps played, the ending would have been nicely wrapped up.

People saying that the schedule was bad, I think you really lack any insight of a tournament that requires 9 teams to be fit in a schedule and be ready within a reasonable time w/o any problems. There is not one tournament with a perfect schedule. And if I would have created more time gaps between games, the complaint would have been that it takes 1 to 1,5 hour for each game to start. The delays were simply impossible to set straight and I only got Saturday and Sunday (till 14.00 CET) to fit it all in.

Anyway again thanks all teams, Zoot, Mousestar, supporters etcetera.

I genuinely think you have no idea what you are talking about.

If there were other people working on organising things other than myself and Blad3, then we would have the resources to give viewers all the special information they wanted. This LAN event did not take place to give priority to viewers, it was there to give priority to the people taking part. It was most important that we organised everything so that the participants would have an enjoyable experience.

It was also my first LAN event, if you didn't hear - the PC I was using exploded on me, I had to set up a huge amount of things in a very short space of time. This lead to the fact that I couldn't do a number of things that I had planned. There was very little promotion done for this event, no more done than any weekday match. As I'm sure you noticed, the viewing figures were less than what I get on a Zotac. If I were to do the event again, I would try to organise a schedule for guest casters and I would give myself more time to talk to people about releasing stream information. I would also bring my own computer so that technical problems on my end would be minimal.

If you're expecting this to be as professional a stream as something from ESL or something done by Trance at a Dreamhack (or what ever else), then you can keep dreaming. There was two of us working on this event, that's why Blad3 says that if he wants to do another event - there needs to be more staff. I hope you realise there is more people involved in the staff list at other events than just one caster and one tournament admin.

I'm also disappointed at some negative comments, I'm disappointed that the last map couldn't be played - but I'm also a realist and I'm extremely happy with how the event panned out.

This event has been a highlight of my year and I can't wait to get more opportunities to work on projects like this. The people I met were fantastic and the city in general was great. A big thanks to all the people who watched my stream and persevered regardless of the sound issues and other technical issues I was experiencing. Also thanks to ID for providing LAN servers and thanks to the players who were so friendly and helpful!

No, I didn't hear. I never heard any explanation about anything from you. That's what I was missing the most: Communication.

And thus, here's some (I hope) constructive criticism: Tell people what's going on. Even if it's only problems and other complications you are telling them about, it will make all the waiting times much more tolerable, because the viewer knows that there's a reason to them.

And boy did they succeed in that point of view. You can keep repeating how shit this was and how bad that was, perhaps if there was a crew of 5 people running the event and 3 running the stream your points are valid. It's just bad that your bashing something great, CTF hasn't had a lan since Quakecon 2003? Try being positive for once.

Don't watch if you don't like being 2nd priority, don't badtalk people who put a lot of effort into it. If you think they should do better, help them? Talking shit on esr is not helping.

From my perspective being there, teams weren't really warming up for 30 or 60 minutes before games. The main problem was minor computer issues and the fact everyone had to redo their setup each time they had a match on a different computer. It's also kind of exhausting to sit around in the dark all morning. People understandably wanted to take short breaks to go smoke, get water, etc in between games.

I played on 3 different machines. One was in Dutch, the other German and the 3rd might have been Swedish. On one of them the keymapping was different. Had to install and set up voice twice, and on one computer my keyboard kept freezing after a few minutes and I had to reboot and find a new kb. I'm sure a few other people had similar issues.

The lan overall was a lot of fun, and I'd happily to go to another. It was player-focused, but In terms of efficiency for the viewers my main suggestion is that if teams stick to the same computers there will be less setup time after the 1st round or 2.

I think while you might have valid points, there is a way of wording these things that is more constructive and will garner more support than taking a very critical line.

Suggestions on how to solve problems is probably more helpful than highlighting the problems themselves, which often everybody is already aware of.

The main thing is you learned up a lot, so next your event will be definitely more times better, that not means, this one was just bad, vice versa, thanks for org. this, can imagine how much time you spent on this, enjoyed the event much and looking forward for next. Tried to help you with coverage though ;)

As a participant i can say that the lan was really awesome considering BlaD3 pretty much organized the whole thing alone with just the help of zoot and mousestar. It was great meeting the people you play online irl while being able to play some ctf on lan.

Congratulations Blade, I think you did an amazing job creating this event, and you are giving a great example of something the community can do for itself now that the big organisations like the ESL etc are not providing us with these events.

Trust me u did a really really good job, and the fact u did everything for free aswell is amazing.

and the reason the 5th and final map didn't get played was our fault but due to the flights back we couldnt do much about it :(.

I had a blast at the lan and watched BlaD3 work his ass off. He did everything pretty much by himself along with zoot so considering that it was quite amazing what he pulled off (especially if you compare it to qcon etc which we freely bash to the ground every time, and they have a tons volunteers and staff to do everything)

So stop hating please, this lan did not deserve any lame criticism. Also it had 9 teams attending with no price money and 75 hz monitor, which is like amazing for quake :)

with all the extra people there, there could have easily been 2 or 3 more teams :))

No ,sadly there werent. Guess we need more BYOC quakers for that. The ql tournament set-up was in use most of the time. The internet connection was very good at the LAN tho, so we (me and dope) played some online games.
