I do twice the work in each of my cups by offering at least two divisions (ESL TDM cups that is) in order to make it more newcomer-friendly.

However,

a) From a newcomers pov, it's not div 1, 2, 3... it's more like div 1a, div 1b, div 1c,... The chance to stay focused and motivated for a team full of newcomers is about zero. Also, lack of punkbuster or anticheat in general makes newcomers go "sure. again. kthxbye"

b) We're too closed up. id doesn't integrate ESR, streams, leagues etc. well into their product, so newcomers never check us out. Even for our casual fun in the afternoon we play pickup instead of (premium) public so to the newcomer it seems no one plays this game.

I would be glad to help form a new generation of quakers (with ESL cups etc if possible) but I just don't see how at the moment.

Depends. If we're just consumers like the newcomers are, then yes, we're at the mercy of id Software.
If we're not just consumers however, if we identify with the game and the community, we can improve the situation without id's help.

- Produce lots of inviting content on youtube, social networks. Imo most people in this community don't even begin to understand how much we have to thank people like Disrepute, vor, 2GD,...

- Play more public matches and be nice to people. Telling a newcomer on public a thing or two before a map starts, sharing items etc can show newcomers the spirit of the game. Telling them there is something like ESR, level up, clanbase, hoq, esl etc. can help as well.

- For the brave: Produce useful content in the QL forums and/or link to ESR, LevelUp, leagues,...

- Join, coach or somehow help newcomer teams. Make them feel appreciated and help them to grow. These days whenever I talk to someone looking for a new clan member or two he does not care for activity, all that matters is whether or not he knows the name from Q3 div 1. We're just way too closed up!

- Leagues are constantly looking for admins. I did both TDM divisions in ESL AMC #2 last night on my own, while kwatsch did the CA Spring #3.

- If you know the game and especially if english is your native language or you speak it well, you can contribute through youtube content or covering games.

- Someone create a little Donate button for people like akuma and make them produce new, good community content (like 2K/xt maps).

Lots of things we can do. Unfortunately, most people in this community are just consumers...

I admit I'm one of those "consumer" people. Back in the day I did a bit of admining and stuff like that, but now I can't really give that amount of time.

I will have to think about how I can help though. I do care about this game and would like to see the community grow. May think about doing guides but I don't think I would do as good a job as the other guys you mentioned.

I have a little programming and web design experience so maybe I can think of something to do with that. I wonder if it's possible to integrate quakelive.com clans with a cup system built on greasemonkey? I have no idea but may be worth a look. It would be cool for clans to be able to signup using the teams they already created on the site. Could even try to create match making by estimating skill from stats or qlranks.

I haven't used greasemonkey before and maybe it's an awkward way of doing it but I feel there are so many barriers to whatever we want to do since we can't integrate with quakelive. Even qlranks relies on players manually updating and therefore the stats are really limited.

OK I'm rambling...

The small things can help, too. Just interact with people, especially newcomers, be nice, encourage them etc.
Sounds menthal but I have actually tried to talk to some noobs in warmup on public servers and told them how to play, and they liked it. Sometimes, a bind x say_team "<< get item" can make a guy like a game and feel welcome.

still not gonna reach 100clans tho. Every quake player only care about prizes. Adding prizes to every division in a league orso and we might have 100singups+players from other games trying out =)

Quake 3 used to have more than 10k playing on servers at the same time, several years after it's release. Not sure if QL has been above that, except when it was brand new.

The fall 2009 CB CTF opencup had 84 teams, then the activity dropped off considerably due to lack of maps etc. Premium subscriptions also drove away the casual teams. Doubt we will see 100+ CTF teams again in quake unless Quake 5 is released and is good straight out of the box.

You need to pay to create a clan, not join one. A clan could participate with 1 pro subscriber and the rest on standard, although it's a bit inconvenient to have to invite every time.

and what when the pro cant get online for whatever reason? imagine a cw final and this happens ^^

I am pretty new at quake and enjoy it because I dont need a clan to progress.

I have done my years in another teambased fps and now I like to be able to focus on duel, the area where this game excels. The teambased in quake mode are primitive, boring to spectate and seems to lack a lot of tactics/strategy compared to other games.

I like people like you, reminds me of myself when I was younger!

- quake is the best duel game bar none.

- u r a quaker who likes team games? Then ql has modes inside ql to satisfy u (ctf, tdm, ca). U don't have to move to another game and learn it from start in order to play in teams.

- u r not a quaker who likes team games? Then forget ql, it probably isn’t even top 5 in that category, try something else.

that is the sad truth that some ppl, blinded from their love for the game, stubbornly tried to ignore and could had almost "kill" the game in last dh. Kill is far fetched though, but it would had definitely damage the game, if there was no duel comp (not a lot though, since quake is a bad ass game and not a sensitive pussy like some ppl think).

I can tell you what will help but nobody will ever do this. All EC clans should just spread out of gathered super teams and join teams with lower players. They can help them to improve and there would be far more cometition around and not just matches where you know the result before they ready up. But it will never happen because of human EGO and the holly winning what is most important for them. Only 1 who made something like this is PURRI with play and he has my respect for it.

Yeah, would be a win win situation, actually, as many high skill teams complain they lose interest in the game when they never find praccies in their skill level etc.
And it would have to start with people like us, rindo. Mid skill needs to become low skill and high skill needs to become mid skill. This way, newcomers can play with people like you and reach decent levels pretty fast.
And of course, clan identification is a thing that holds teams together, so if a team goes from zero to hero together, they should be allowed to stay together, even if they are then uber pro.

But yeah, I want to see [TA]krysa again etc. Would make THEM happier gamers, too.

what? purri just switched clans to play which was his q2 clan and they've played together for 1283 years where they have been the top clan. there are currently NO "gathered super teams" in EC which is one of the reasons why its gonna be the best tdm competition we've had so far. most ec teams currently have that 1 super guy instead of 1-2 teams stacking 4 of them. what you describe has basicly already happened, disbanding current EC teams would be the biggest mistake ever as there are no clear dominating teams, competition is good and these teams are _STABLE_

If you do that, believe me, you'll just get called a clanhopper :)
