The more the merrier. Ideally, we'd want to have a healthy mix of players from the whole duel skill spectrum. That's what i liked about tourneys like CPL '06 where there was lots of lesser known players given a chance to shine on the big stage.

invited players means that they're actually allowed to play in the tournament. It's not enough to send in an application.

so the procedure is:

- I send my application;
- Dh authorizes me to participate;
- I pay the ticket and organize my journey;
- I play

Fresh blood. Remember what Carmac said? About how the only way quake would ever be on IEM again was if quake started "producing" new pros. I dont know Oaki or what skill he is, but imagine how motivated he will be now, and at some point, maybe we will see him in an IEM finals.

I like this in principle, but judging from his qlranks page, Oaki seems like a very strange choice! For the benefit of those of us who have never seen him play, can someone explain why he's likely to be competitive?

That's not the point. As far as I know there are more players who are pretty unknown and would fall under fresh blood who want to go and are significantly better than Oaki (of course I can only judge by his qlranks profile but it looks pretty bad). Tho I think it should be possible to fit all people that are interested in the 32 slots :)

DHS 2012 Matchmaking Rankings

Note that these rankings are for matchmaking rather than a ladder. That is, you can't say that one player is better than the other but it does state that Cooller should probably play against the best since his ranking is currently so inflated (I have very very few matches on Cooller). And so on. Mr. A1r_R41d has been added with default ranking since we have no idea of his actual rating at the moment.

how do u calculate the "volatilities"? (in quotes cos the terms i a bit ill-used).

Term is from finance where it is known as "Stochastic Volatility". It is a measure of how much the player is fooling the ranking system. That is, I use it as a way to cope with the fact that some players improve faster than what the system can handle.

The calculation itself is to seek a solution to a specific equation. If you look up Glicko 2 you will find the exact computation used.

The conclusion is clear though: When I consider the next weeks rating deviation (the width of the ranking) a higher volatility is factored in so the player will get a larger value. This then accounts for the fact that the player is playing consistently over his or her rating so the player will have a larger move in rating. It means that young talented players will improve quicker in the system rather than having to work their way through the ranks.

One way to interpret the value is to say that players with high volatility values are "dark horses" in the sense that they outperform the expected rating value. So they may beat you even if they are underrated.

ah. that makes it much clearer. thx. still feel like the volatilities are unnecessary. i dont think most people here would understand the impact a 10^-3 change in volatility would have on the rating. just the ratings and the confidence intervals is enough imo.

actually read the glicko 2 document. interesting concept. maybe we can see this implemented in ql ranks?

I thought ql ranks is already using a decent Bayesian computation. I can't remember its name, though.

qlranks implements ELO which is a special case of this system. I am just toying around with the algorithm to figure out how suitable it is for these kinds of things.

I do have half a millions duels and the full rankings of some 31k players. This is the DHS 2012 subset :P
