I liked 1 a lot more than 2 though....
It is somewhat like the matrix as the 1st is really awesome with some new things which were done nicely... and then 2 only focusses on the few new things and it feels all gimmicky and lame :<
I haven't seen/played 3 though so can't comment on that one.
i saw 30 sec promo video, enemys are like in 1st episode and I saw a parking house that looked just like the one in 1st episode, if you like cs1.6sourceconditionzero and go that basicly 2 percent changes its cool, but as I've said first episode, all basicly, episode 1.
Tech is awesome, and well suited for this type of game. There are a few issues like getting stuck in environment, sometimes sluggish movement, bad mouse input, almost zero interactive objects on map, everything is glued on and indestructible. Some of these are direct result of it being a console port, but overall it's good looking and spectacular game that feels good ingame.
As for writing, previous games are not masterpieces of literature, or known for amazing plot, but they had their own charm, were semi serious, while retaining their pulp novel feel.
Here, however change of developers did more harm than good. They try their best but they can't get that Max Payne vibe from older games. Some (cut)scenes still have it, and give hope, but that impression quickly blown away by whats follows.
It lacks that noir element that was present before, but thats not why it's bad. Characters, including Payne himself, are terribly written, the things they say, way they act, are more suited to GTA type of game. Rockstar went pseudo serious world route with GTA4 compared to older ones that were kind of arcadish-crazy and Max Payne 3 feels more like spin-off of this Rockstars attempt at creating realistic world.
I am bad at writing and expressing myself to elaborate deeper, but there were so many times when I just rolled up my eyes after another stupid phrase that come out of someones, mostly Max, mouth.
However, dialogues and monologues are not even the biggest problem, mission structure itself, like the script missions follow is even worse, designed without a thought.
Disregarding ridiculous boat, bus, helicopter, etc shooting galleries in best traditions of Call of Duty and said GTA4, where you kill hundreds of enemies, destroy whole carpools and countries supply of boats.
There are countless of scenes, where you go guns blazing, blow shit up, and when you are done, cutscene takes over, moves you silently to next room or area thats in spitting distance, where you have bunch of enemies at best chilling around, and at worst creating some plot scene, all while being totally ignorant about the fact that someone, next door just fucked some serious shit up. Like what the fuck? Once to see it is fine, but as it happens almost in every mission, it just makes me want to step out of window just to make it stop.
More, absolutely stupid scenes and character behavior that would fit in some crappy, straight to DVD crime movie.
For example, 3 guys guarding Max to dig his own grave (literally, after he killed like 30 of their comrades), Max as any proper action hero takes down 2 of them, in quite slow fashion and guess what 3rd guy with shotgun thats standing right next to them does meanwhile? Runs away with his back turned.
And having your friend, trained ex-military type of guy (useless bot that has impact on game only in cutscenes or scripted events with who you spend half of the missions with) after being left in situation without a gun, disarming some enemies, getting their weapons and killing everyone in front of Max, who follows injured behind him, suddenly during the same mission becoming helpless idiot that can only radio to Max (who is now in position of shooting gallery with sniper rifle) stuff like "THEY ARE COMING FROM BEHIND/FRONT/TOP/BELOW", ignoring all the weapons around him that lie on the floor, running stupidly, and overly dramatic into enemies, just so that player could save him in the last moment. Thats just lazy, uncreative writing.
Characters that have no reasons to be there suddenly appearing in worst possible situations to give a helping hand and progress plot.
There is so much bad stuff like this, it's not just bad in terms of being Max Payne sequel, whole script is absurd, even for generic action game.
I really wanted to like it, but I can't. I know some people who claim that it's good old Payne, but I just can't see it behind the pile of shit that is called script in this game.
Sounds.. not good, to go for a buy, as much as I have not bought the full version of Duke Nukem Forever, also because the sequel did not have the same charme as DN3D did have :/
Now this is how you write a review. I'm not even playing this but after watching walkthrough's on Youtube I end up with the same impression.
I actually decided to re-install Max Payne 2 and immediately jumped into speed running it. Once you decide to skip every cut scene the game is quiet short. It's the gun fight that left me a little bit disappointed. I remember it being better from 2-3 years ago when I replayed it. Maybe it's because I completed it with desert eagle only and no bullet time.
