It's not a viable option at this time because It has a fairly small amount of active duellers or any players for that matter, I still think it deserves more players because the game itself is not flawed by any means and it's actually fun to play/watch. - the ladder could be better organized

- In dm railgun can destroy the whole match as it's so easy to score with it compared to the rocket launcher
- models could be brighter
- lots of french players

Regarding the waiting-between-rounds thing that's a problem only with the elite mode. And only 1 setting, that's because it's still alpha. Let's see what the beta update brings..

I saw you playing some games earlier, I won't bitch you out for mis-information but I'll help you a bit.

No zoom benefits defense in elite, if there was zoom I'm pretty sure the attacker would win almost every round. It wouldn't be balanced. I want zoom too, but I know it wouldn't make it fair at all.

The netcode is a lot better in Alpha3, so it's improving. I guess wait a bit.

My FPS is fine, I have a 6870, I'm a stable 140fps, try toying with settings and see what you can do. Not sure because it depends on your hardware.

I hope to god they make the models brighter, the red team blends in very well with the environment and sometimes it's so frustrating to try to hit pixel rail shots on someone you can barely see.

The rest I think I can agree with, we shall see what happens with the game, it does get stale, playing with a comp team on voice makes the game better imo (for elite at least). I hope a proper duel game comes out, I honestly rather play PK than SM at this point, no offense to SM, but I rather have a fast paced 1on1 DM game to play.

We implemented bright armor option on the last version but it was removed by another thing, so it should work on the version of tonight.

We also changed the texture of the Elite and Joust mode on the wall that was the most conflicting with the Red team.

you can change some graphic settings in-game: press esc or alt and right top setting button. Not all graphic settings since it would require reload/re compute of many things and we have a lot of out of game additional parameters.

railgun speed reload is a setting by the mode. depends of the taste of players, it is strategic for some mode.

we will optimize some stuff on beta but you can fix your FPS in advanced setting (but will have to set to your lowest since we can't render faster the heavy frames)

crosshairs will have other default choices, more for competition/experts

zoom is available only in some specific space since it increase the range of the railgun (this is a specific of the weapon to avoid pixel shoot depending on screen resolution to help)

netcode is totally different from TrackMania. Some evolution in the next version and possibly some others in the beta according to longer and wider tests.

server browser is an ongoing evolution on server side. should be and will be improved.

do not underestimate the capacity to change some graphics and upcoming import of objects possible by players in order to bring some visual diversity

I played a bit of practice clan war with the team adK, and I have to admit that, despite the fact that some things annoy me in this game, it was fun to play overall.

We have tried to add lightning gun type of gameplay since some time in the game with various approach. It was suppose to be the foundation of the third weapon, but I was not satisfied with the results, so we took another path and designed a rather unknown type of weapon, at least for me, the Nucleus. Some part in it are like the alternate lightning gun of Unreal when you fired into it, but with the bio gun sticky charges and short range and wide flak canon to speak a little in Unreal terms for once ^^ I like the weapon that I hope will prove itself to be quite tactical.

prodiG had the idea of a LG taking off bits of an amour (so if an attacker has 3 shield, hitting them enough with the LG would take off one of them, but if they didn't hit them enough to take off a whole shield, it would regenerate back).

Don't know if that's been considered but it's something I think could work.

We though about it and made it. I even added at that time the fact that the LG was silent until you pop out the armor of the opponent, enabling for stealth attacks. I very liked the concept but all the tests we did revealed some deep issue I did not want to be in the game and difficult to simply express, otherwise we would not have made all these developments without thinking about it before.

By the way, the ability of the armor to quickly regenerate in each armor 'brick' exists in the game and can be used also to make rocket launcher with various power compared to armor strength, enabling cool RPG elems to be added to mode such as rockets being not strong enough and requiring a combined fire with ally to suppress an opponent.

You are pretty smart, a developer that is actually listening to his user base and fan base and trying to create a game that the majority of people will love playing.

If you keep this up, the game will be a success.

I am pretty sure the developers are experienced to understand that the esr crowds wishes represent a very small minority.

As a psychology major and an interaction designer with experience in the gaming business I know that what people say and what people want is often two different things. The latter can often be figured out rather easily by some telltale signs from the former.

This fact may seems obvious but from my experience its not often done correctly from developers. It will be very interesting to see how the shootmania team does in this regard.


My personal request would be to try rockets that inherit motion from the player to make curved rockets around corners possible and an almost instant rail weapon but with a sloped trajectory. Both to would be rather new to yet relate-able for this crowd

I got a beta key last night and played it for an hour or so.

I actually found it quite fun, RL reminds me of trying to play quake 3 on 150 ping.. and hitting mid-air shots is satisfying enough.

After playing the game for more, I have to agree with hazrd below :[

Actually downloading it right now, it's slightly inferior to quake but I've always enjoyed the game and I don't think it gets nearly as much spotlight/credit as it deserves.

That's just the anorexic model and the shitty animation pattern ( somehow reminiscent of sagat's 2 eyepatches ). Half of my kills in somewhat close range battles were lucky ( I hear it's called skill nowadays ) shots because I just couldn't tell which direction the char was going. It's hilarious how your own movements feel sluggish / full of inertia when you know you look like a warping kuwaiti for the guy trying to kill you.

Will I get another + if I say I'm pretty sure that in 2 hours ( 1 week for a completely random player ) I've figured out 80% of what the current physics allow us to do ( some overhead for bugs, perfecting some stuff, that kind of stuff ) and that the complete lack of control midair, slow ass speed until you land ( and sprint ), impossibility to change direction when sprinting if you want to keep some speed ( need 200m to turn 90°, max without a real big speed loss is 45 ) makes jumping and being fast actually worse ( not only dangerous before you get a decent speed, plain worse because you're too predictable ) than being slow as shit but having a seizure on the ground ?

As for the enemy model animations, I'd also like to point out that many of the maps have trees. I'll let you imagine what happens when you try to shoot a slim, warpy model that's dancing around a tree in a game with shitty netcode. By the way, you don't shoot rockets to the ground, smartass. That would be a waste of a a guess where your oponent will teleport next, and guessing is how you fight in SM.

I agree with nearly all of this - I was thinking of doing a full on user review of the game and post it here but 2 things stopped me:

1) It would mean playing it more than I have (about an hour), and its just too boring for that.
2) I think my conclusions would be quite negative and as much as I don't like the game, if others do I don't want criticise too much and give it a chance to develop.

It is only marginally less boring to play than it is to watch. Everything hazrd lists above is precisely why this can't be a serious esport. It would be an excellent console game for playing while you're lying on the couch eating pizza and that's how it should be marketed...

Played it for a few mins and realised certain quakers in this community have been bought and can no longer be trusted.

The devs should stick to trackmania.

so far the negatives for me:

-game mechanics (jump before using stamina, only one weapon available out of the two (lol) at a time)
-visuals (nothing unusual, actually ql looks better on full graphics,
compared to that very hw demanding)
-controls (no separate button for jump/stamina, mouse input horrible)
-game modes (too many of them, mostly gimmicks, very few is not especially boring like insta, bomb defuse...)
-menu interface (there isnt advanced server filters etc)

the few positives:
-map design was somewhat refreshing
-easy to get involved (i guess?)

this is very weak so far especially for 20€. uninstalled after 3-4 hours of total gameplay, i dont think anyone after a year at best gonna play it if the game doesnt changes drastically.

Finally played it, and as I expected, this is perfect shooting game, very fast, with complex deep strategy and awesome weapons. There are absolutely zero bad things about it. I'm not worried at all that it replaces quake as esports.

I lied, I have now played it (for five minutes haha).

I see a lot of effort given to the "back end" of the game. For example you can run a graphics test to see how well your computer will run the game on the settings that have been manipulated. The video options seem relevant as well as noticeable.

I have a 8800 GTX (I believe). I have an ancient computer and with all settings turned down (to my knowledge) I'm getting 90+ FPS in any view. Even with the entire map in view as a spectator.

Now...

My first virgin impressions tell me that I have to play the game more :(

The game needs bots. I don't know if they're in the works, but if memory serves one iteration of UT was played more in single player than in multiplayer. I believe it was UT2003? Or was it 2002?

Anyways, if I was in charge, I would implement an EXTENSIVE single player mode.

Trackmania Nations was very well optimized and had plenty of video options (q2 graphics to being one of the very best looking games of that time). Seems like SM isn't by any means.

TM's single player mode was composed of several time trial challenges, with 4 medals. Have to say it was quite fun.

extremely skill-intensive too when played online. give your opponents an inch and they'll take a mile (literally, not in the idiom context).

I like the game. I don't think it is even in the same ballpark as Quake in terms of depth and tactics, but I think the game is far more accessible.

Movement seems floaty and a little awkward at first, but after one adjusts, it seems to be about right where it needs to be. I still try to strafe jump in this game haha

I don't know where the key binding options are, or if they can be changed.

Game modes seem contrived at first, but they force movement and sometimes aggression. I personally think the team-game-types will be much more popular.

The stamina bar and weapon energy reload rate seems to be about right. The management of these variables is important as is their introduction to the game. Otherwise the game would be a spamfest. More on this later.

Essentially there is one main gun which they call a Rocket Launcher. I think they did a terrific job at nailing down the visual and auditory feedback of this main weapon. It's a fantastic design in my opinion.

I have not used the railgun.

Enemies seem clear and easy to see, but I think even more work could be done in this area. The direction the enemy is facing is easily ascertained as well.

A point of interest is that since the game is not dependent on pickups, maps will not need to be endlessly balanced. Therefore, most maps will be playable, and probably pretty fun - even with the tiniest amount of thought.

On to the problem as I see it. Almost at random (and believe me I haven't played that much) I can go from dead last to first or close to first in non-team game types. I will not argue, that I have played the game enough to know about this, but that seems - at least to me - a red flag for now.

Most people already know about this game, and detailing my limited experience is probably a waste of time, because I offer nothing new, but I will say that I think the developers are doing the right thing. Quake is Quake. It's fantastic. But this might just be the kind of simplicity and fun, that can foster a community. I personally don't have a problem with that. It's a barebones FPS with an emphasis on player movement (as in, move, or die) with a predictive main weapon and faster than usual movement. I'm in.

I forgot to add that don't use a quality preset in the advanced options. Go Custom, and turn all that shit down. Makes a big difference.

Installed the game, played it for an hour and won't touch again.
Maybe I'll install it again when it'll be fully developed and free to play (it's gonna happen for sure, otherwise there won't be any players)...

i was surprised to see a race gamemode (time attack) in it but movement needs to be improved. Limited stamina just sucks. Unlimited stamina would make the game much faster and it would be easier to get used to it.
Jumping before using stamina is bad too. I want a jump and a stamina button. Imagine situations you want to escape... jump and die. It wont be this bad if the jump would be much faster.

Aircontrol would be great to keep your speed in corners.

It was probably the most fun I've had for a long time in a FPS but I didn't like their version of FFA, but that jailbreak mode seems okay too.

Points of concern:

1. my ping was always shit
2. the interface is fucking atrocious, and I might even say confusing.
