I really believe he's done with quake though. Which is a shame, I will miss strenx. He and stermy helped the quake community a lot and strenx deservers more love than he currently gets.

Where do you get your information? Sir you are completely 100% wrong, Esports is more popular right now then its ever been. Tournaments have more spectators/more concurrent viewers than ever. but no one is playing FPS, people play League of legends. On a regular day when TSM-Oddone( oddone is a top tier lol player) when he's playing at his house streaming he gets 20k viewers all the time on a regular day of just playing, not a tournament. Esports is going big time, and if there was a FPS title out there that could unite all the fps PC gamers it would be big time and there would be big money behind it but theres not unfortunately. I play league of legends now, and quake on the side I suggest everyone else do the same. Quit thinking that quake needs big tournaments, cause its not going to happen, just enjoy the game while we can still play it and until something else comes along to replace it, and if nothing does replace it then lets just enjoy it.

That's not e-sports, that's one guy streaming his gaming... I'd say the golden days of "e-sports" were the CPL days, and even then the interest was abysmal.

Those 20k or even 50k are piss in the ocean compared what real sports rake in on viewers on average, and there's a lot more kids playing video games on this planet as there is professionals in any kind of sport.

Competitive gaming is here to stay, e-sports is a pipe dream, maybe S. Korea has a thing going there, but I doubt it will last - the majority of the world is far far less interested in watching people play games, it was done, it failed badly.

I'm a gamer, I play a lot of games, I got this GINX TV channel where they show games, game reviews and all about video games in general 24/7, do you think I ever watched it for more then 1 minute? I just don't give a rats ass about it, if I want video games, I'll go play video games, not watch some dudes play them, don't have time for that nor is it interesting anymore, may it be Quake, SC2, LOL, WOW, or whatever game - I did that when I was 16, I was hanging on every QTV watching every match, now in my 30s I couldn't care less.

Fps genere just died a few years ago; there is nothing stupid in Strenx statements. Strenx, as baksteen said, has done a lot for Quake community.

What we have here, Shootmania, is a new begining in games. Everybody here (ESR) should give it a try, you wont be dissapointed.

Since the game is still in alpha not all features are available but you can feel its potential an thickness; advanced movement, lots of people playing, easy aiming and dodging for a quaker, and no douchbaggery among players.

I can easily understand why Strenx is playing shootmania and many other people.

Quake Live is dead since id wanted to kill it and step forward (SynC did a great job in that since those gamemodes wouldnt have been hard to implement). Also shootmania comes with some integration for web pages and programming which is what quake needed, community support.

ql is more alive than ever. From the moment I created my first account I honestly haven’t seen so many online tourneys as of now and especially such variety (different skill levels, map pools etc.). If u play for fun, playing nowadays is a treat, u have many tourneys to compete in, streams to watch, qlranks to check ur progress, qlprism and many other community stuff, even a new anticheat from id. If u r a pro, then I don’t know. U probably have a couple of lans less a year and for that I am not even sure (if true).

As for the “Everybody here (ESR) should give it a try, you wont be disappointed”, have to say that personally I tried it and was very disappointed. If u see my earlier comments before I try it, I was kind of defending the game, since contrary to everybody else I liked watching it on stream (I might still watch it, but surely won’t play it). I agree with u, that should try it, but don’t promise satisfaction.

As you pointed out QLPrism, QLranks, WolfCam are good for QL, really good, but none of them are supported neither developed by ID.

All them were needed at the beggining of QL, all us we knew that,Id just ignored the fact. As a programmer i would like to point out, aside the great work behind those software apps, for a big company like ID wouldnt have been hard to develop.

Right know there are some tournaments, right, but all of them are non relevant for the main stream, kids dont even know what quake is; in 2001 everyone on the internet was talking about fatality (thats why he has a hardware line), CPL and so on.

Shootmania needs some tweaks, for real, but in case you found it dissapointing, as you pointed out, i'd like to advise you (no rudeness here :P) to stop looking forward something like our beloved game.

Its different, its new and its refreshing.

BTW two big points for Shootmania are that, right now, no noticeable cheating is being done by anyone (that might change) and people are mainly friendly and deserving to help newcomers.

what has strenx done for the ql community? he played the game and made money of it while seemingly doing nothing to prevent the split from the 10-25 elite duellers from the rest of the scene. why should i be graceful if that ignorant retard is gone... also, we let him play on despite him cheating and being an uber dick years ago :d

what i as a "casual" need is not esports, but a working online scene. something that's entirely unrelated to the shootmania pro player hype going on right now. see pk/q4/ut3, rinse and repeat.

I have to strongly dissagree with you since:

a) No cheating by people is achived only by developers supporting the game and developers not releasing source code being used nowadays (anyway im a huge opensource fan, biggest mistake was remove PB for unknown reasons, given ones are fail explanation).

b) If you care for the community the community knows what they worth and behaves consecuently. This is achived through giving new resources to the people, listening to them,...
Id quit that game years ago with QL when they decided only care about money and not giving a shit about integration (i havent seen any); if you harass people, people will start behave like people do in QL (aimboting, wallhacking, demeaning,... )which is really disgusting.

Shootmania comes with PHP examples, web integration and a lot more things, you should check, rather than QL has and will ever have.

I love quake, been playing for over 10 years, but Sync and his dev team tried so hard to get the gold they killed the chicken.

More than all you've said, which are valid points, the thing is quake live still has lots and lots of active players and tournaments around the world.

You can't make a living out of it, but you can only do that with sc2 and LoL anyway.

Quake 3 (so QL too) is one of the best games ever created eventhough they are just ID's tech showcases. We all here love it and will love it.

I'd say right now this is one of the most active periods of all time. Enough people to play any mod you want at any time, several online tournaments going on, major lans even without relying on the ESL, CPL and other organizations (dh winter, dh summer, quakecon, that ctf lan, adroits, australian intel thing, maybe ugc), etc.; and all that in a game that was a missed opportunity for id.

there are like 10 tournaments going on right now, dh summer was less than a month ago and quakecon is in 3 weeks. Yep, dead.

to the contrary summer was always down time for quake. that's also the reason most leagues did not have any cups during that time, only clanbase offered "summer cups" where they usually tested new maps and game settings.

shootmania not only sucks but also is going in the wrong direction. Sorry I'll stick to quakelive, there seems to be a duel/ctf/tdm tournament or a stream or pickups or movies or or... everywhere nowadays despite beeing in the middle of july, arguably the month where the activity decreases the greatest out of the twelve.

And for the first time in 2012 we even had a great ctf lan in NL a few months ago and are about to have another blast at another ctf/duel/tdm lan ran by people that just love the game.

I have never won much but I stuck to playing because I simply enjoyed playing, I enjoyed playing at the highest level on every gamemode, I enjoy playing a zotac, getting to a final or a semifinal and test my skills. I enjoy going to lans unsupported, paying everything and coming back with fuckall.

Nobody really should listen to a player that only plays quake because of the $$$ aspect.

Maybe No. Supporting shootmania for strenx is like promoting, he stepped forward , sometimes time comes to do something a bit different. Etc like stermy doing events, 2gd started doing a lot of things with gaming and so on. I don't compare strenx support for shootmania for these 2 guys "jobs", but it's still some other and same time same way he picked.

Strenx and stermy don't love quake, they love the money. That's why you have never seen them play in a tournament without prizes and you never will. The only reason they have promoted the game is because that way they can make more money out of it. Shootmania is the perfect test to see who really plays ql because they love the game and who only plays for the $$$.

I think Stermy is a pro gamer so if he can get by doing that then good luck to him, the reality is, there's simply hardly any money in the games he plays at the moment.

When you do anything for money you have to tow the line, its like politics, you elect these people to do the right thing, but people who say the right things do not last 2 minutes in politics before becoming disillusioned.

I don't really believe any pro quaker likes SM, I just don't, but I get some of them need it to work and are committed to doing and saying things in that dept which gives an ideal impression.

I didn't know they said that and would be surprised if they did.

Either its been taken out of context, or they've been bought, the reality is, there won't be any real money into SM apart from ESWC and the odd online tourney, when you factor in most of the money will be split between a team, I doubt anyone will pull more than 10k-15k out of it.
