I don't have any idea who maximus black is as well, but like i wrote somewhere else, i guess he can only help quake get some more exposure amongst fans of other games.

checked his twitch, he has 5m views and ~25k favorites so i guess he's not a complete anonymous in the world outside of quake and esr.

edit: anyway, removed the old announcement, put in more precise one (and fancier).

i'd rather get someone to bring in more viewers for the Pro Duel, Open Duel, and CTF tournaments. those are the main events. this will only bring viewers into the csn byoc stream. honestly we need viewers on the main quakecon stream

The content they're covering is essentially everything people don't care about with QuakeLive and a plethora of other bad games.

what do european pros have to do with CSN? Csn isn't a sponsor of quakecon, rather event organizer. it's just a matter of additional funds not only/exclusively for that guy, but for some additional CSN admins to be able to participate and make the byoc a better experience for everyone. just like teams have to find sponsorship for their players to be able to attend, we also have to find a bit of sponsorship for the whole crew to be able to attend, it's not like csn has an endless cash pool that it can draw from. at least we're not "beggaring money" to secure a prize pool.

we're not forcing you to donate, if you want to - thanks, if not - thanks again, hope you watch the stream and enjoy yourself.

thing is, byoc will be done with or without maximus black and rest of csn crew, the core people will be there and prize pool is set, this kickstarter is just for additonal content. :>

Let me try to clear up some of the misconceptions here..

The prizing for the event.. last year it was over 35K in prizing. CSN also organized and administered the Open Duel through the BYOC last year after QuakeCon scrapped it. These prizes come from hours of reaching out to the booth sponsor at QuakeCon to secure 'swag' to give out to players in the BYOC. The good people at QuakeCon also were a lot of help in getting these prizes.

CSN spent over 10K of our own (very small) investor budget to have the opportunity to organize events at last year's QuakeCon. This year, if you check the Quakecon website, you will notice that we are listed as an official sponsor of the event. QuakeCon has asked us to come back and have provided us with more space in the BYOC and more help.

Even with more help from QuakeCon.. the costs of doing what we do is over 6K. Yes.. this includes the costs to travel to the event. This includes paying to have a server there to hosts servers for various games.. this includes marketing materials and such.

The reason to bring Maximus was to provide the BYOC with a new experience and to bring even more SC2 fans to enjoying Quake. For those of you that are stuck only in the QL community.. you are aware that the support for this amazing game is low. CSN ran our playQUAKELIVE series Finals last month and the good people at teamliquid.net (SC2 Community Hub) were amazing in letting us add that stream to their stream calender. We had over 1800 concurrent viewers watching QuakeLive. You will not find another NA / mid tier event with that many viewers in the last 2 years (minus our first playQUAKELIVE series :P ). Maximus opens the flood gates for viewers from all over.. many of which have not even heard of quake to pour in and support QuakeCon. This makes perfect sense. Maximus is not some 15 year old SC2 nerd. He is older, like many of us here.. and he was very excited to experience QuakeCon and reach out to a new demographic of gamers. To help with the Kickstarter Project, it just made sense to bring him on board. His fans are very supportive... as you can see by how much has been pledged already.

I would hope..that many of you in here can appreciate what Steve (xterm), vid, easytarget and myself have done for Quake over the years. I have been involved in the Quake community for over 12 years now and have ran more tournaments for more mods then anyone I know. We (Steve and I) continued to support Quake while at the GGL (Global Gaming League) and the NESL (National ESL).. and have carried that tradition onto the Cyber Sports Network. Outside of the IEM events, CSN has provided more cash prizing for NA Quake Live tournaments then any other NA organization.

Running more then 35 BYOC Tournaments is not an easy task guys. Many of my staff worked the booth 24 hours straight to ensure that those in the BYOC were being catered to. CSN brought Rachel Quirico (Seltzer) to the event to get live content and to reach out to a new demographic. We worked with fatality and DKT and others to help us expose this great game to the masses.

What we are asking.. is that you help us continue the tradition of supporting Quake Live. Again.. even $1 will help us reach out project goal and not a single penny of that will go to anything but helping support the BYOC. Anything raised over the project amount will be dumped into additional prizing for Quake Live only events.

Listen guys.. this just makes sense. We are NOT MLG.. we do not feel comfortable charging $20 to each person to watch the stream to support the poor choice to fly in every player. We do not have 50 million in venture capital and only 1 staff member at CSN gets paid. These are the facts guys. We are blessed to have this opportunity given to us by id software and the QuakeCon reps. Please consider even $1 in supporting this experience.

I think John explained it best right there. We very much want to continue and support Quake in any way we can. Couple of old guys now but we still play! We're trying hard here to keep Quake active in NA! We'll also have some EU tournaments coming up but I want to make sure we don't clash with Zotac and jeesports or any tournaments over on the other side of the pond.

As for Maximus. It was a calculated decision. I wanted to push for White-Ra because he has more connection to the Quake Community... but he was not available. The main reason for MAXIMUS is because he provides us the greatest opportunity to reach our goals. His fan base is excellent and he was totally on board with helping and wanting to explore QuakeCon and new markets. I understand for some.. it does not seem to make sense.. but the numbers do not lie. Quake does not have the numbers and support right now to help us reach our goal. By adding Maximus to this experience, it not only helps us reach our goal.. but it opens the flood gates for thousands of SC2 fans to further appreciate Quake.

As I am sure you know.. communities are not always friendly to each other. LoL cant stand SC2... SC2 dislikes LoL players.. CS players like to trash on Quake Players.. and so on. BUT..

SC2 players very much appreciate the skill and creativity of Quake and this is golden opportunity to bring them another step closer to not only supporting Quake.. but playing Quake.

It doesn't make sense to use a SC2 player to promote a game he has no idea about. What's he going to tell people? That it's cool but he has no idea what's going on? How calculated of a decision is that?

Not to mention you think there's some whopping number of SC2 fans going to QUAKEcon (caps for emphasis) that don't already know of QuakeLive in the first place? Not to mention, during QuakeCon there is the Asus ROG tournament that will garner way more attention than a BYOC stream nobody knows about. You're being very optimistic with "flood gates of thousands of SC2 fans."

To me it doesn't sound like you're trying to promote Quake; more like Maximus wants to promote himself and you guys want to promote CSN. Your coverage of QuakeLive, as far as I can tell, revolves around modes that nobody cares about/plays and a bunch of other games. Nothing inherently wrong with that but using the Quake community to do it? Comon now. If the SC2 community hasn't already rallied behind your awe inspiring MaximusBlack then I'm not sure why you're asking us to.

Oh and before I get smashed about how CSN runs tournies and stuff... I get it. Thanks for doing that, this kickstarter just doesn't make sense to me. I hope you reach your goal.

I think they're more relying on the fact that this maximus guy will obviously have this on his twitch stream, and wherever else he posts about his current gaming/gaming related items (twitter etc). This obviously will draw some more sc2 players who have yet to see quake, maybe they will like it...although it doesn't seem like this stream will be even 50% quake so who knows :P

This is not about sc2 fans going to Quakecon .. this is about bringing a popular SC2 player into something new.. which in turns brings new fans into the Quake community.. even if to appreciate the game. Lets not beat around the bush either about it.. we (CSN) needed a personality that could help drive our kickstarter project. The fact is though.. he is very much interested in QuakeCon.. and for him to be able to spread the word of what QuakeCon is.. beyond the hundreds of us that already know.. I can not see how that is bad.
Also.. because he is SC2 related.. and because CSN has done a lot with SC2.. I have been able to get 2 Quake Live streams listed on the Team Liquid thread. This is an important thing to have happened because hundreds more tuned in to appreciate what Quake is and the skill involved.

We are not using Maximus Black to promote Quake.. he is offering to help us bring something new to QuakeCon. QuakeCon is not about just Quake anymore.. it is more a 'Celebration of Gaming' then is has ever been.

Last year.. we ran over 30 tournaments and the game that gathered the most players was SC2.

Also.. how are you familiar with our coverage? Technically, we have not announced a single game or tournament that we are running at this year's QuakeCon.. but I assure you.. the prizing for these tournaments will be significant. You would also be surprised at the number of viewers that tuned in last year just to watch 2 guys ramble on stream and just view the QuakeCon.. it actually blew my mind. At one point we had over 4k just watching the BYOC.

BTW.. we are now only 600.00 short of our goal and that has come from mostly Maximus Black fans.. so based off that.. I would say that they support his efforts very much here. I can understand why the Quake community may be reluctant in helping.. because the font person for the project is a SC2 player.. but isn't the BYOC all about gaming and for whatever game you like?

I am not allowed to list the tournaments that we will be running.. but your assumption that we are only running tournaments for modes that no one cares about is a bit obnoxious.

Anyway.. enough of my rant for the day.. I really do appreciate the comments, support and even the criticism. All of it will go into helping us make for a better BYOC experience.
