Yeah, it's a pretty old game (release in '02 I believe), and unless I'm mistaken the dev team is extremely small. Community seems to be dedicated enough, and the game itself, while simple, is nice to play in quick spurts. The graphics are impressive for a game this old.

Unfortunately, this doesn't touch Quake with a yardstick concerning movement or complexity -- just bunnyhopping, with no strafe jumping of any sort. No air control either. Rocket jumping and rail jumping are both present, which is a nice touch.

At the same time, this is part of Sauerbraten's inherent charm -- its simplicity.

Using weapon recoil to jump in Sauerbraten was probably the most unique thing about the game.

To be honest what really attracts me are the large open maps with trees and huts and castles and shit, as well as other landscapes you don't see in QL.

tried it when it was launched a couple years ago (castles and shit), and even before when it was called cube or something. It's awful, even more than warsow.

Cube 2 is the engine used to power the game. Cube was the engine before it (never played it), and is the engine used to power Assault Cube, which is still being actively played to this day.

From what I remember I more or less liked cube's gameplay so I had high hopes on the unpronounceable sequel. Menus were something different (not good but different) and it looked awesome....until I pressed W. Worst movement ever. Then there were the weapons, sound, everything.

Pressing W + repeatedly pressing spacebar to "bunnyhop" to gain acceleration, is that the movement that you didn't like? (just wondering)

Weapons and sounds, I'll admit they're kind of bland. Not sure what I was expecting when I downloaded it though, they just come off as meh. I don't even use gunmodels, so I don't notice those. ;)

The new version coming out pretty soon will apparently be using different/updated sounds (dunno about models), so we'll see how that goes.

Can't remember anything specific, but it was just that the movement felt awful no matter what "technique" I used. Cube was miles better on that regard.

Will surely try the new version if someone posts that on ESR.

I've been playing it recently (2-3 months ago) and got into one of the (top?) clans just by talking, the game is absolutely dire.

The movement system is a bit disgusting, its very limited and is easy to learn, easy to master, all you do is tap space bar and hold +forwards - That being said there isn't much in the way of air control and within 3 jumps you're at maximum speed.

The game's community is also really awful too. Take it like this; you got ESR, then you got Sauerbraten. Sauerbraten has probably the most obnoxious community I've ever seen. They don't take themselves seriously and if you say something like "cube 2 is shit" - you're warranted a ban on the IRC channels by some Italian that has skin as thin as a sheet of paper. It's basically a third world country with handicapped cancer patients and children who have probably been sexually abused. Theres probably two people in the Sauerbraten community that are actual people and deserve more respect than that of what they get.

Gameplay wise, it's a poorly done rip off Quake. Theres nothing unique about the game in its gameplay. You have the Yellow Armor that gives you 200 armor and the Green armor that gives you 100 armor. The weapons are blatantly based off weapons from Quake one and Quake two. Even the developer states so in the documentation. These are the following weapons:

Pistol - This is basically your blaster from Quake 2, slow fire and small damage, you spawn with it instantly alongside with your Melee weapon. It's also hitscan.

Rifle - This is your Quake 2 railgun, it does 100 damage and is hitscan. OP as fuck and so fun to use in combinations, just like in Quake 3 CPMA.

Rocket Launcher - This is technically related to Quake ones rocket launcher, splash damage wise. It does 120 damage and reloads every 0.8 seconds. Maximum damage per second is 150.

Grenade Launcher - This is basically the most fucked up weapon in the game, if you experiment with this gun you will find out that the physics of the projectiles are seriously fucked up and need to be fixed. On maps with hills you can shoot down a hill, it'll then collide with the edge at the bottom and then return back up the hill at full speed. It does 75 damage and reloads every half a second.

Shotgun - Does 20 damage per 10 slugs that it fires in one go; It's like DooM 2's Super shotgun. Wide angle, yet less damaging than DooM 2's SSG.

Chaingun - This is your lightning gun from Quake, just with spread added onto it which makes it balanced in some aspect. 30 damage per one round, 300 is the max damage per second.

Maps are basically retarded. If you take a look at one map named Turbine, which is the most popular map in Sauerbraten. It's a big arena, its not suitable for duels. Its the kind of map that you would play a 3 minute duel on to practice aiming; just that in Sauerbraten people play maps like these where you can camp in one corner and just rack up the frags. Whenever I dueled in Sauerbraten I would say instantly "No Turbine" because that map drove me insane. It was as awful as the other maps. The maps in Sauerbraten are poorly thought out. I remade Aerowalk and Quake ones DM4 in Sauerbraten - Guess what, they played a lot better. You had lower scores (Usually you have a 60-50 game), and you had more fun moving around the map looking for your opponent. Why are there these community maps that are absolutely vile and disgusting in the game as official maps? It breaks my mind.

Gametypes: For 1on1 - You play either Insta or Efficiency, efficiency is basically clan arena, just that you can damage yourself. Quickly, someone delete this game from the internet, fuck it - delete the internet too. Once I finally persuaded some people to play Free For All (Or as we know it: A real duel where you pick up items) - It was actually sorta enjoyable. Some people said "it was an imbalanced game mode" - Yeah fuck off; thats why it requires more skill than your shit modes that basically give you all that you want on a silver spoon where yes, it is balanced, but it isn't rewarding or fun.

Sure - The game is fun if you want to click on heads in insta CTF, but as a game that you can take seriously like Quake Live or Warsow, its a joke. It's basically Quake4Kids.

All of that being said; the game from a programmers perspective is just done, its not done properly - its just done.

I would like to see Sauerbraten develop into a much more mature and well thought out game but with the rate that it develops at I don't see that happening. It's open source as well and I know that the svn gets regular updates probably once or twice a month. I suggest that some talent here actually propose ideas to the Sauerbraten developers on how to improve the game - its a community project and you will most likely encounter a third world cancer patient or a teenager who has the hygiene of a Japanese whaling ship trying to counter argue your arguement with some retarded non-logical statement that makes RayTheNoob look like Albert Einstein. Just ignore them and continue on. Also the map editor is very simple to use and fun to learn - Anyone here could make their own maps in it; I've done it myself and they're quite nice. Surely we got a few people here who have tried to use GTKRadiant to make their own "awesum possum duel map with six mega healths" and failed miserable, go and try it out in Sauerbraten, its a fun experience.

Yeah, watched some dueling and it didn't look that... great. At all. iCTF is pretty fun in 10-minute spurts, but I'm not that great at Quake so my opinion is probably not worth much on these boards. ;)

That was actually pretty interesting to read because all I've done in Sauerbraten is iCTF, with a little "regen capture" (similar to domination), which was meh. Totally different side of the game I haven't even encountered.

It's cool man, it's all cool. If you want I could re-install the game, find all my old configs and settings and stuff and show you around the shit-pit as I like to call it.

Perhaps we could breathe some life into the game and tell the community what the fuck is up.

Just played a duel in FFA mode. I haven't had much experience with QL or Warsow dueling, so I'm not sure how it really compares to those other than it felt much, MUCH simpler. Just about everything, really -- items, movement, the maps themselves, the way the weapons work, etc.

Felt like Quake Lite, so to speak (... I guess?) Wasn't necessarily *bad* per se, but doesn't hold a candle to the intensity, intricacies, and complexities of Quake dueling. No comparison.

My experience might have been better on a smaller Quake map (smaller for the sake of the game's physics), who knows.

Aw hell, I had some fun. :3

The idea was iirc with Cube and Sauerbraten, to create a 3d engine with the least amount of code.

Also created by one who worked on the CryEngine: Wouter van Oortmerssen (aka Aardappel).

The fun is to create quite easy own maps in real time, within the 3d engine itself, unless using an external 3d editor and then try it within the game. Minecraft shares a similar idea.

this. cube/sauerbraten was mostly about creating an engine that supported easy mapping in 3d. then the devs added some kind of movement similar to the last game they loved in... it's not that interesting from a gamers perspective (imo) :d i used to play and test it a bit years ago.

After spending a couple of weeks with the game, from my experience, the degree of "interesting gameplay" comes from who you are playing with/against.

Though the game is relatively simple, and won't offer much of a challenge (most likely) for long-time Quake vets.
