Thats the problem, I can not possibly see the logic of the devs in the development of PQL. iirc they couldnt find the CPMA developer/s and couldnt copy it exactly because of copyright issues, but seriously, the community is pretty much telling them in the face that PQL just doesnt cut it. I do not think Hoony (he was the lead, so i guess it pretty much belongs to him) would actually disagree to actually making CPMA popular again (I have no doubt that it would develop a solid playerbase again) and with a bit of smart marketing (like a freaking leaderboard for example) even actual q3 CPMA players would transfer to QL (do not give me that "Why pay for it if I can play it for free", you will not starve because u lose a couple of dollars a month/year etc, and you possibly cannot be that poor if you can actually afford a connection n stuff.) But then again, this post is just words, and its been said thousands of times before me, and probably will be said after me.

I said many times that if cpm was in ql i'd move there, but moving to pql is like moving to excessivedawn with a cpmish ruleset, no point.
CPMA is a really good platform imo.

cpma is a mod and pql is a change in the ruleset (movement, weapon switch)
yer, that's the main difference I guess

weapon switch and aircontrol are about the same, but it comes to little details of the game, the doublejumping, stairjumping, telejumping, circle jump is more powerful, weapon knockbacks are different as well as for some damage... it provides a better gameplay. cpma also feels smoother than ql, in CPMA the core gameplay is cpm, the whole mod is thought for the cpm gameplay...
In other words cpm is more polished, PQL feels like a beta stage of CPM.

edit: tiered armors, mega has a different system too, different tactical resources..

Better NetCode and lighter client.

Various gameplay:, CPM (of course), VQ3, PMC and CQ3.

CPMA is "a mod made by pros for pros". Actually more efficient than the current QL. Maybe QL looks more userfriendly, with the website and the better UI system. But regarding the gameplay and the features, CPMA has much much more.

And of course, you have CNQ3, but I don't know it enough to say if this client is better (for CPMA of course) than the QL client.

Ah, and of course, free and tons of maps.

TLDR: CPMA has another gameplay than PQL, and a client and features improved for the players and competitions.

PQL is a piss poor attempt at copy/pasting the rule set Adam, Kevin, Rich and the others spent the better part of four years perfecting. Perhaps if Quake Live itself had a point, then PQL might actually serve a purpose, such as bringing competition-orientated game design with no artificial skill cap or creativity ceiling back to the industry. As it is, they're just ripping off the team's hard work, presumably in the hope that it will make Quake Live appeal to a wider audience, and make Bethesda some more cash. Personally, I’m pretty disgusted. They could’ve just given us mod support instead – you know, like Quake III’s had for almost thirteen years... back when they actually supported the gaming community, rather than milked it to fund their next cash cow rehash.

How id have fallen. In the mean time – CPMA’s still free boys and girls. Enjoy. (Nine years on, and I still do ^^)

Brainless disclaimer: my opinion, not the design team's opinion, etc etc... But credit where it's due - I knew those guys for five years. Few people in this industry love their game and work as hard to drive and perfect it for gratis.

Those years aren't coming back. Nowadays it is (almost) impossible to find decent public matches in q3 without having to arrange them before hand, and if QL dies players are not going back to q3 (and not converting to cpm lol).
QL is the last popular fast paced fps there will ever be unless 2gd's reborn somehow pulls it off; not even SM, T:A and nexuiz could do so by literally throwing money at players. But noobs and cpm/qw/wsw/ut/xonoticlol fanboys don't realize their games are dead.

So while I agree there are plenty of awesome community-made things in Q3 that aren't in QL, there's no other realistic option really.

Also most people are butthurt because they didn't buy q3 in first place. People in other games are used to buying them, for example cs and sc players, but not "quakers".
Moreover lots of games are now using the "freemium" business model, in which players are literally forced to buy stuff that costs 10x more than regular games. QL is by far the most "free" out of all "freemium" games because you can realistically play every day without paying (invites) and it's absurdly cheap ($24 a year to unlock everything is nothing in comparison to lets say LoL, which isn't the most expensive by any means).

I think people are butthurt because ql took q3 and took away a number of things for premium rather than creating something on top of q3. Kind of like getting the latest model of a certain car and all of a sudden electric windows and aircon have become optional extras, while the car is slower and breaks down more often.

I wasted countless hours in servers searches for leagues like Clanbase or ESL. In QL we just show up on match time and bing, instant neutral server. Pure happiness.

Similar history, stretching back to the days of Jolt, Barrysworld, Wireplay and the like. Only league we ever had problems finding a server for was Clanbase, and only because many of our European opposition insisted on quibbling over a few ms that wasn't going to win them the match anyway - it rarely involved a lack of servers, just relative routing to them.

Not anymore, and id and Valve are largely responsible for that. In the old days, just about any game you wanted to play was supported by someone, because enough money was made on servers for the headline titles such as Quake, UT and Wolf, that there'd be the revenue available to carry fringe games as well. Now new games are largely all peer to peer rubbish, because all the game server hosting companies have folded.

That's not 'service' as you call it, that's a root cause. And I'd much rather have had the broader support, differing routing choices and optional tools that the private market servers used to give us.

(Oh. And custom mods, maps, and all the other shit we lost from the core titles when id decided to fuck everyone over for another percentage.)
