Twitch is the exact same for probably the same percentage of people, it's complete garbage at peak hours and freezes even in 360.. while I can watch smoothly in 1080 at any time of the day on own3d.

dont hate the map, hate the players. ztn is an awesome map, but i agree +back whores can make a better player end with a big headache. Im mostly a +forward player so i try to evade them tho.

Well, you know, the thing is I can't really hate the player. Because they are smart/good for +backing on this map. If done correctly, the opponnent just can't do much about it.

So in all honesty, it really IS the map that needs to get the blame. Because the same players that +back on this map will +forward on other maps, just because of how the maps play.

If you put up 100$ each week for a tournament it's different. Because then people that just 'want to play for it' can sign up.
In tournaments like this they actively aproach players and ask them if they would want to free their schedual at some time in order to do some tournament. It's horrible that they only put up 40$.

The whole financial structure is fubar and doomed to fail. This tournament being one of the prime examples of it.

Because then they would feel like they do something for the sake of others rather than for their own gain. When you pay them they can't really convince themselves of that anymore.
It's shown quite a few times in sociology/psychology already that it works like this.

Why this is an insult is easy... they have to make costs to get the 2 casters to Italy. Which in no way is reflected in the price money for the tournaments.
When you would spend around 500$ (which would prolly be the bare minimum to get the shoutcasters to Italy (train / plane / food / place to sleep / hire of the studio etc.)... it's probably a lot more.
And you give 40$ as prize money for some tournament that takes around 3 hours of time by 4 of the "most skilled players". I find it an insult.
It's like saying "We'll hire world best 4 people for 3 hours... and we'll pay the guy that does best... a bit less than minimum wage".

40 dollars is still 40 dollars which is around 30 euros / sterling and it's a free tourney so it's still money. I really don't understand why people are getting so worked up about it; it's a reputable organisation with a brilliant cast and a high quality structure delivering us the individuals free live games.

They don't have to do this but they do out of the goodness of their hearts. You're lucky quake even sees prize money these days let alone 40 bucks.

I think your metaphor is completely wrong. In one, you ask people to do a boring job, in the other you ask people to do what they love, and give them the chance to earn a prize with it. The players had all the right to say no if they didn't feel like playing.

The casters get flown over for the weekend, to normally cast the Sunday Cups. Now we had time to put in an extra 40$, so now instead of the usual one cup, you get two.

Flying the casters over is a business concept which goes further than online streams and also further than Quake. I cannot reveal much about it yet, but it's not like people haven't thought the idea through and somehow thought they could make a profit on only flying people over, paying out prize money, and get a load of bucks of own3D TV ad money in return.

So this is why pro-gaming fails :(

You're comparing it to a job. They are free to enter or not. If they think it's not enough, they can pass. We're not paying them to enter, we're just giving them a reward if they win.

well from the business side when they are "good enough to be invited" they should "have the skill to get people to your stream". Which then would mean that someone gets $ for that.

Now for instance this could be viewed as an interview program. The host obviously has to show up every time the program airs (he should ofcourse be paid accordingly) and guests can join him to talk about stuff.
Now some people think that their message is so important to be heard that they might actually pay to be aired.
Most people however will be invited to say what they have to say because it is relevant for the audience of the program. These people should ofcourse have a reason to go to that program (which could be $ but it could also be becomming more known or perhaps even to do someone a personal favor (etc.)).

When you view it like this a lot of problems arrise (imo) with the invite tournament.

The only way I can watch 720p@60fps is downloading the mp4's and playing them with VLC. If I try to watch them in the browser, all I get is a crappy slideshow.

As a matter of fact, on most websites searching the source for mp4 or mp3 (in case of mp3 streaming websites) will be enough, maybe sometimes you'll have to dig a little bit more but that's usually fairly simple.

Even easier with AdBlockPlus, on the page with the player and once you have launched the file (audio or video), click "Open blockable items" and do a search for mp4 or mp3 and you will have directly the link most of the time, works really well on soundcloud for instance.

Same question on twitch... but i guess it's not possible.

Really you should just download jdownloader, works great with twitch and pretty much any other websites streaming websites.

I think flying in people to create a more formal looking stream is better than a bit higher prize pool, I don't think many people would tune in to a stream of a shitty unknown game because it has 500$ prize money instead of ordinary 40 to 100.

Other than that, I'm more interested in your view about flying in casters and prize pool.

From my point of view it's pretty simple. Flying in casters while having such a small prize pool is pretty sickening. The players are the ones who make tournaments interesting, but they are getting, by comparison, an absolute pittance. If the expenditure on casters and a dull, sterile studio was worth it, it would be reflected in the viewing numbers, as it stands the viewing numbers are the same as we saw for zotac. It would be different if you were flying in casters with giant fanbases who can expand interest in the game, e.g. 2GD/Joe, but for anyone else this is a waste. This isn't a LAN event, where you do need casters on location for a complete experience. It's purely a display of extravagance for no reason other than they can.

However I'm not naive enough to believe they actually care about boosting QuakeLive's popularity. To me this simply seems like an exercise in establishing themselves, with a framework that can be used for other games. How can it be anything else? Am I honestly to believe that this level of expenditure will be maintained for our game which unfortunately fails to draw any significant level of interest. If I'm wrong, fantastic, if I'm right I will not be surprised or be like "I told you so", I'll simply be disappointed.

Maybe when they reveal more information things will become clearer, right now I just do not see how anyone, no matter how desperate they are for quake tournaments, can look at the information available and expect this to last. Meanwhile, yes in the short term we have an event each Sunday to watch, great, will it continue for years as zotac did? Let's see.

If you want to win matches turn on torrents and continue to play as if you're on awesome ping... perhaps only altering the use of weapons (aka more lg and less rl).

let a friend of you play against you while he has torrents on and then come talk to me again.
(btw it would be most fun if he can set the torrent speeds such that his ping is not very affected but there are constant spikes of around 15-25ms (in height).)
There are many more ways though... but that is not even my problem with the netcode!! it is that the guy on a good connection is influenced (negatively) because his opponent has a crappy ping/connection.
I believe that if you have to change your game in order to win against someone who has a different ping than your previous opponent that the netcode is wrong.

whitout deliberate tricks to the netcode, having a worst (=higher) ping than your opponents is always a disadvantage

It's written so that it automatiicaly does all deliberate things to make it so that "all pings are fair" which basically means that if you have good ping you get punished for it.
There are other implementation possibilities that have similar effects but where the downsides are with the guy on the higher ping.

I wanted them to fix it without it ever being publical knowledge.... I talked about it in closed beta already... back when I actually was one of the top players in europe (although many of the pro's were still only playing q3 therefor the competition was less but I ended top4 in pretty much every tournament I played in).

Even in my post about the netcode I didn't condemn any of the possible options I just explained what the differences are.

if you could manage to read you would notice that I wouldn't really practise because (imo) playing with this netcode is demotivating. And due to that I wouldn't win online tournaments.

edit: if I wanted to win tournaments in order to become pro I would've used torrents just like my opponents at the time did.

in other words, at the very beginning of quake live's history you managed to be top 4 (if this is even real), just because all the pros were still playing osp, then they started to get confidence with ql, you quickly went down in the ranking, and you used some netcode excuses to justify it and the fact that you didn't play so well on lan, when the netcode is the same for all;
This is how it seems just listening to what you say;

...in an other way of watching it, it could even be that you were so "strong", and only online, and only at the beginning, just because you have been a pioneer in the netcode tricking ( in which you are an expert, as you don't loose an occasion to point out ) ; then, all the players started to get aknowledged of it, and to use it, so your advantaged stopped to be, and even started to become dangerous and spottable, and this is why you just disappeared from "the top 4" and even "10";

but we could be wrong, of course; this are just two possible explainations to your behaviour, ( but more realistic than your "demotivations" ).

Well, i wouldn't have said it so harsh, you probably aren't mentally disturbed, or at least not too much more than the average, but the fact alone that you claim so much to have been "top 4", and then, somehow the world changed but that didn't depend on you, shows how much biased are your opinions on yourself and the other pro players.

I don't say that the world changed.
What I said (back in 09) is that if the netcode didn't change that we would see online games becomming completely dominated by people who have crappy connections playing balls to the wall agression with LG and rail. (I said it a lot more detailed though arguing why and how etc..)

And beware... the online monsters (strenx / evil / pavel) either have/had packetloss or high ping and all they really do is lg like mad. (Pavel's game has progressed the most I feel in terms of becomming more dynamic). Notice btw that I don't say that they are bad... I'm just noticing their game-plan.

And why I got 'worse' is because
1) I didn't want to change my game because on lan the changes are not affected and I kinda figured that if I would "decrease my game in order to win online tournaments" that I'd "suck on lan".
2) Other people did change their game (and sometimes even connection) in order to do this.
3) Some people actually learned QL as their first game and since it's online only they assume that how they are playing QL is how it is meant to be. These players can be very good online btw.

Here is the whole question: you never achieved something on lan, where all your "disadvantages" are supposed to disappear; your whine about you losing only because of the netcode shows that you just cannot accept to having never been a top 10 (or even worst) in ql; not that this is important: it's just a stupid game, to be good or bad in it doesn't makes a people better in the things that really matters in the real life and as a persona.
So you should just accept this, as many others peoples do, and stopping that dissociation from the reality.

Dude there was like 2 years between me 'being good' and me playing my first QL lan because all tournaments were invite only and they only invited people who were 'famous from q3'.

And on that lan I barely lost to spart1e who is a stable contender at all lans he goes to (and has a ton more experience in playing lan games than me). Online I was as good as spart1e 2 - 3 years ago (see my game vs him for the clanbase blabla cup (forgotten which one) in the semi-final). From that point on people were getting more used to the netcode and I have slowly (or steeply.. whatever you wanna call it) dropped on online rankings. Then on lan 2 years later... I'm still just as good (aka barely losing to spart1e).

That you can't handle me being more skilled than you will ever be and therefor go whining to me and trying to talk me down etc. is not my problem. It's just a stupid game, accept this... and stop dissociation from reality.

Watching your rage degree, that seems your case; also, "to barely lost" to a player doesn't mean to be at his level, at all, we all know that and the fact alone to point out "i barely lost to X once or twice ,so i must be at X level" clearly shows how much biased and unrealistic your own opinions on yourself are; a lot of peoples have won against Rapha, in some matches here and there, included your career stone, Spartie; does that makes Spartie even only "strong as" Rapha? No, of course; and all the crazy things you say about "gettin more or less used to the netcode" are really inconsistent excuses for not being at the level you would like to be.
And then, the last gem: the old, insane, illogical stetement that is around millennia earlier the quake release: "i'm stronger than you (in a x thing), so all that i say and do must be true and incontenstable" : that kind of things, just disqualifies your statements, and only shows how much painful is for you to not having been able to win anything on an irrelevant video game.

any plans on coming back? Without a great lan performance (aka winning matches) you'll be all jamerio about this and post the same things in 15 years.

I was in doubt to go to the dutch lan. I'm pretty sure that if I would have decent hardware to play on I would've went there... but seeing how that isn't the case I don't see it happening for other lans either.
At least not with the few QL lans that are around.

Also I'm not like jamerio because I actually went to a lan and performed pretty decent.
Jamerio says stuff that winning a random FFA within 5 minutes while fatality wins one in 5mins30 means that he is worlds best douchebag... while that title clearly still goes to fatal1ty.

It is just retarded that whenever I say something about the game people jump and point out how "I suck" while "They suck much more than me".
For instance nobody on this site has EVER given a good argument on why the ql netcode is better than I would propose (or even better than OSP) without me having replied on it in a sane way. And all the discussions are won by me and then are followed by: "But you just say this because you suck online... and you also suck on lan.".

I have np with my own results and I think I did quite ok (not best possible but not going down like the "weak player people here paint me off to be").

Own3d only provides past videos in the quality they were originally recorded (in this case, 720p@60fps). You can always try to convert them to a smaller resolution (or less frames) using VLC or some other program.

which of course is not annoying at all. ;) would just be nice to switch between 30 and 60 fps so you do not have to convert it.
