AvP was ace man. Back in the time single player games still where interesting, or I just lost my taste. Natural selection was really cool to play and it looked good.

i've only played one game but i really enjoyed it, from talking to NS1 pro's it sounds fun on a competitive level too. I'll probably give it a thorough go when i'm back from ESWC.

lol, your on ESR mate, where QW, Q2, Q3, Q4, CPM, Nex and warsow players all bash on each others games when in reality they are all very similar.

they are all good games, but everyone is heavily invested in their game of choice and use the gameplay/metagame they are used to as the benchmark - any deviation or variation, no matter how small is framed as a negative and a departure from the purity and perfection of their chosen game... the same applies to NS and NS2.

All of those games take a considerable amount skill, just in different forms and to different degrees with relatively slight differences. NS2 has been objectively dumbed down to increase its appeal. I pointed out a few of the main problems a few posts down. The nice thing about arena shooters is there's no ambiguity about what the game is. Quake will always be a skill based fps. NS has a much more spread demographic in that there are a lot of casual players that don't want the game to have much skill. NS2 is made by these people and they also realize that the casual audience is more lucrative. One of the mappers was in the best european ns1 clan and gets no input. The biggest insult though is they did all of that without trying to make a tutorial or matchmaking, which is the first step to modernizing any game with a steep learning curve.

There's a strong similarity to the shift from TFC to TF2 where robin walker flat out said "TFC was too competitive," but even TF2 introduced capture point competitive play and made it more teamwork based, while keeping a decent amount of skill. NS2 removed a lot from the game while offering nothing of value in return and threw the game on a shitty engine they wasted time making with an art set of everything the same dark grey color.

basically l4d2 on roids + way more balanced and much more refined mechanics on each end (marines and aliens). and the fact that the game has been in beta for like 2 fucking years.

NS has been slowly dying out, Alot of good old school players no longer play. The NS2 engine isn't optimised well at all good luck getting decent FPS.

It is a custom engine named "Spark". Some are reporting FPS issues, but I haven't had a problem (Radeon HD 6970).

I'd suggest watching the developer's videos to get an understanding of the physics.

The game is supposed to be very mod-friendly (Lua code and development tools provided with the game), so it'll be interesting to see what shows up over the next few months.

i've read that real bunnyhopping have been developed at first in that mod, and only later implemented in other games like qw; qw indeed didn't started with air control, or it was q1, didn't remember

qw started in 1996 while half life was released in 1998. no idea when natural selection came to light but it was probably around 2003/4.

QUAKE and *ONLY* QUAKE invented bunny hopping!

HL is actually based on the Quake-engine, which is why HL cannot have invented it before Quake, probably the valve just copied the quake movement without further noticing

well, i knew that QW engine allows the bunny hopping, but i was thinking about it like an intended implementation: q1 had strafe jumping and RJs as "bugs" of the engine, they weren't planned at the beginning; so i was wondering if NS has been the first to intentionally develops it; but it seems that the dates denies it;

q1 is not qw
besides qw there are plenty of other games that were released before that and that had bunny jumping, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Actually hldm and early cs has it rofl, natural selection is not special.

TBH, I haven't found any game enjoyable in the last few years except for Quake Live. But this game I am actually having a blast and the fact the developers are listening to the community, 20-30 full servers 24/7 and that it's really fun and has a high skill ceiling this game is replacing QL for me :V

Really? We all might as well play cod then.

The devs totally stripped out the fps skill. Movement was more of a staple of the game than quake because of all of the different techniques in the game and more importantly the fact that it is a ranged vs melee game. Once the pace in a match picks up NS1 can be faster paced than cpma with more movement skill needed. They also gave the aliens a ridiculous amount of impairment abilities in ns2 to drive down the skill.

The real kicker is after stripping out the fps skill in the name of accessibility, they convoluted the structures and resources system greatly, while managing to fuck up the balance that they spent years doing in ns1 so there is only 1 incredibly boring strategy for each side. On top of that the powergrid/infestation system aims to slow down the game immensely and turn it into league of legends where you're at a stalemate and shoot static structures half the game.

This is ignoring the performance problems like low fps, 4.6ghz servers getting 30 tick with shit hitreg, and a bit more input lag with modern rendering delaying things a few frames.

As it stands the competitive scene is dominated by the 2 good players from ns1 that are willing to put up with this game for the shitty tourney prizes.

:D

Some movement is still there, maybe a bit dumbed down, but still there(for aliens).

I personally think that we quakers should begin to realize that in the future all games will be dumbed down and stupid, thats why we need to keep the communitys alive, because in some years, it will only be handful of people who appreciate fast paced fps.

Can you link a vid showing this speed? I looked through a bunch of vids of it on Youtube. Everything made it look pretty much like CS with some mild bunnyhopping. Something like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNMOtvwU2JM

What makes the movement complex if it's just bunnyhopping?

It depends on how you perceive pace. It definitely has more twitchy aim and erratic movement. As far as movement speed goes once jetpacks vs fades, leaping skulks, and lerks come into play it gets really quick (links at bottom). There's a lot of skill in mastering the movement methods for each lifeform/upgrade and managing your energy or jetpack fuel for them. In late game fades and leaping skulks engage with jetpackers in 6axis combat. Aliens need to make their movement unpredictable while still needing to get close to a marine who is trying to avoid you. The wall geometry also clips players very easily unlike q3 and if you're a fade or jetpacker you have to be very careful not to get snagged on something in combat or you will die and put your team at a big disadvantage. A major aspect that frag videos miss though is how often fights result in no deaths because players can't commit to an attack or persue a chase without risking too much, similar to dueling and backing out for items.

It also uses quakeworld movement with the air control acceleration turned up a bit so in terms of combat/dodging I think it requires more skill and gives players more to work with than cpma movement, especially when it is all in very close proximity. An example of different movement types is in that video you linked where marines can only bunnyhop if they jump to a higher surface, including if you jump from a crouched position to a regular one. This opens up combat options for choosing between a quick strafe jump away from an enemy for speed or taking the initial speed loss of a crouched jump so you can get more distance, and the necessity of chaining jumps off of map geometry.

here's a clip from a fragvid of jetpack vs fade play:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbjlVP_eOCk#t=204s
this cast shows a pretty good example of late game play:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--MlrpJVWsQ
half life doesn't record lag compensation or mouse movement that well into demos so videos will always look a bit off.

I recently started playing ns2 a couple of weeks ago to give it another chance when people playing it that knew me from ns1 asked me to play. This is footage of my clanmate.

The game is still shit and pretty much dead don't bother with it imo. They literally fixed mouse input lag yesterday, but it still feels like shit half the time because of the fps drops in the game. This is forgivable if the game didn't have by far the worst hitreg out of any game i've ever played. With the same settings for hp and damage as ns1, it usually takes an entire clip to kill a skulk if they're dodging whereas in ns1 you could kill 3 in a clip no problem. Because of this and poor design decisions, competitive play is almost purely PvE dota style lane holding bullshit. FPS skill sadly doesn't take you very far in ns2 and pretty much everything I said in this thread still applies. Movement for both teams got revamped to be a bit more like ns1 a few months back after the dev team realized they made a mistake, but the engine still feels weird and it doesn't make up for much.
