me, it makes map different and and not railheavy...

just a personal thing, i don't think its duel.. i've never liked when items respawn at diffrent times than standard.

and the few games I played on this map It felt the one who has the railgun has too much of an advantage, and so it feels the person who spawns closest to the rail at the start will win the game. but soon there's a tournament on this map so we'll see how it works.

The initial spawn is surely a factor, but the map is not "raily" enough for guaranteed win, IMHO.

I had a feeling the RA room is quite spacious and open which gives the player with RG a great advantage.

This, rail also is a great weapon for combos/finishing if the other player doesnt have it. Its one of the most used weapons like rocket and lg.

35 seconds would be more reasonable and you could lock both mega and rail in sequence.

The rail is also a weapon that's very important for the out of control player to keep the opponent on distance while gathering a bit of a stack to challenge for MH.
Still thinking that the 1 minute respawn makes it tough to play out of control. However, I've only watched a few matches.

I think the faggy spawns in RA room are much serious issues.

its good to see some young guys (u20 rofl) still interested in quake. i think baksteen confirms it with a little talent and right mindset to practice you still can reach the top level.

id so show this interview for some players who i know exactly started about the same time as him and still being an 1000 elo clown constantly crying about getting destroyed and refuse to play anyone who isnt on their shitty level telling to themselves its just too late anymore as an excuse...

I disagree with the "they're getting older and won't peak anymore" statement. Comes down to the obsessive nature of the person, and quality of practice. Time most importantly though. People will drop if their time isn't worth the sacrifice.

I guess the assumption is that life brings new things (wife, children, job opportunities, etc.) and one picks those over something done multiple times (tournaments, good placing).

I spoke a little with vo0 at Adroits and he said that one of the reasons that he quit with profesional gaming is that his reflexes are not what they used to be

No disrespect to Vo0 and I'm also some years older than he is! :)

But in this area he is incorrect or he knows something I don't. On a personal level my reflexes are similar or better since I was playing Quake as a 16-20 year old. You also need 'less' reflexes after the years go by as you will not need to 'react' as much as you have gotten used to it more or less and you basically start 'acting' to information to a further extent.

I've also tested many of the 'reaction' tests out there and not scoring worse now than I did +5 or +10 years ago.

This is just a reply to reactions as other things tend to impact your gaming ability once you get older (or when you were younger), but that is a completely different subject :)

You just had to call me a derp, now didn't you. After all I just asked you a question, and it wasn't my intention to attack you on any level.

Keyboards are interrupt-driven and as such they don't have input lag and if someone is selling you a 1000hz keyboard you are being fooled. Keypresses get processed as soon as the keyboard driver passes events to the application requesting them. Time taken to pass a keypress to an application is really nothing, even on older hardware. Sure there is 'lag', but the unit used to measure that is something completely different than milliseconds.

With ps/2 mouse the lag might be significant, as the default ps/2 polling rate is 80hz, iirc. However, it can be raised to 200hz, which minimizes possible lag to 5ms+any processing, which is just about noticeable. But that's the worst case.

Now, the average human reaction time is way over 100 milliseconds. Even if you get some 10ms or something like of lag, it doesn't really do that much of difference, imo.

Just because this device's input method is interrupt based, it doesn't mean there is no lag through the interface standard, the relevant service it's communicating to, or the time taken for the application to attain the input information :) Lets not talk about video buffers and the like either!

For example, most decent quality mechanical key switches take around 5ms to register. Regardless of interface, this delay is present. iirc if you want to spend a retardo amount of money on gold plated switches, you can shorten this by a surprising amount. Anyways...

Ofc, the "path" or number of steps that the input stroke made by the user onto the keyboard, going through the ps/2 interface is significantly shorter in comparison to usb; yet there are still other delays.

Take the tick rate for the .vxd service for example ( I can't remember the tick rate, and tired too look it up :( ); assuming this isn't sloppily coded (they aren't these days) it will only take a handful of ticks/cycles for the input to be picked up and sent through the service.

You have to remember that these standards were set such a very, very long time ago in the fast-moving computer world: the circuitry (very much in particular) is (in comparison to these days; mice with arm cpu's on them..) is shockingly simple and mundane (and elegant imo). Again, a delay or lag :)

To attain a reasonably accurate estimate as to just how fast the keyboard ps/2 ports signals are registered by the end application (quake in this case) would take a good few educated guesses from a lot of different folks with different backgrounds (electronics engineers, C/C++ coders who have worked with .vmx services and such, people who know the idtech 3 input code etc).

The figure could vary a good few m/s, particularly on the hardware side of the ps/2 port; not so much with the software side of things ( I dont know that much about the software side of things, electronics eng here :) )

As the computing power available now in comparison to when the standard was made is mind numbing (yet it will stick to archaic clock speeds in some areas for standards sake); I imagine it will not be influenced so much on the software side of things, like you said in your post :)

In short, the interrupt based ps/2 keyboard port will have a surprisingly large amount of input "lag"; quite a lot more than most think idd.

The question whether the results from _reaction tests_ are comparable between the present day and back then remains open, but as you seem to know what you're talking about, I'd like to hear your opinion on the matter as well, because I personally think the things discussed above wouldn't affect this sort of measurement too drastically as to cause incomparability between the results.

With regards as to how a reaction test or type has or has not been affected by the advancement of the hardware it's running upon; very difficult to argue either way as there are so many unknowns per test, per operating system as well as the devices used. I don't think any one person can answer that question definitively :(

Imo, it's far, far more likely that the change in hardware will affect the test in the ms range. Unless it's a very well thought out and thoroughly coded test with the intention of eliminating the problems we are discussing just now. The only reaction tests I have ever come across are some simple html or java scripts (or god forbid, flash) which were probably made for fun by some folks learning these respective languages.

It would have to do a a "test run" of the connection if the test is done via server on the net, which i imagine most are (where it compares the time taken for the packets to be sent back and forth from both the server and user computer; aka measuring the ping and its fluctuation/variance).

It would then require you to press the button bound as the reaction key (at least once, ideally twice) to determine the latency of your system.

Then it would have to already know (programmed in by the coder who could perhaps know the important delays, or have even tested) the delays caused by the server running the test. Or it could re-examine the server every time it ran, this would be more thorough and elegant.

The list could go on and on.

These are only the parameters that I can think of that would need to be monitored/evaluated by such a program to eliminate most of the potential variances that could occur in the ms range. There will be other issues that am not capable of thinking of as well as simply not realising others, and being too tired to type yet more.

As such, the likelihood that all of these different factors will have not had any influence in the ms range (the important range regarding human reaction times ofc) seems very low to me. Again, this is my opinion, and only have subjective reasons for this conclusion. Nothing definitive :(

In short, I think the hardware variance over the years as well as the "non-seriousness" of these tests will result in the same test being incomparable due to variances in the ms range. I imagine test scores are around 10 ms or so? Even a +- 10% variance in accuracy due to 1ms inaccuracy is a deal breaker for me, as if you can find one millisecond somewhere, you can probably find 20 more ms if you looked hard enough. Let alone the same test actually existing over ten years or so!

So yeah, I think it's unlikely that these tests are comparable; they will be out by at least a few ms I imagine, which is a big deal in these tests.

I think experience is more important than reaction speed in most fps games, even Quake. There is a limit to how fast you need to be able to react to what is happening in the game.

If you're playing a slower paced game, you need even less reaction speed. I played my first QW game in 6 months last week, playing against someone I had never played against before. I was kinda surprised by how fast i was reacting, doing 180 flick shots and what not. My precision had gone all to hell though, but that's all just about practice :D

It might have to do with the fact that he used to have really really fucking high standards and that he can't reach that level again without nerding a game like he used to be able to when he was younger.
I remember tox saying that he felt his body was slower in 08 or 09 and fox saying that his aim wasn't as good than when he was 18 around the same period as well ( aka when they weren't playing nearly as much as they used to ).

Actually this is one of the biggest myths in esport. I think it is inferred from the general observation that in athletics you reach your peak in your early twenties and then deteriorate from that. Anyway it is not true.
Based on reaction speed people could probably compete till they're in their 40s or 50s.

As far as I'm aware, it's from the mid 30's with a slow deterioration into the mid forties, where it (fairly rapidly, in comparison to a decade earlier) declines at a faster rate. And gets worse and worse.

However, in most athletics; pure reaction time is nowhere near the most important thing: you level of fitness you have built upon year on year, even two decades in, can be far more important than a few ms of reaction time :) Let alone experience!

And I agree with you with regards to competing in esports :)

im not sure if that has such a big impact, especially when it comes to quake, which leaves other options to improve your game. after almost 14 years of gaming i have certainly noticed getting worse reflexes and hand-eye coordination in general though. in other games my avg accuracy dropped like 10-15% which is huge.

I did some research on this several years ago (the stone age & era of huge input lags) and found out, based on 10+ sources, that the reflexes are starting to get slower after a person reaches the age of circa 45. It is individual, indeed, and it depends on what you do with your body over time, but in general, there is little to no difference between the reaction time of a teenager and an adult person.

even if his reflexes got worse I guess he can do better than many players in this particular aspect of the game, he used to play cpm after all

Not sure where i should put this reply but i just wanted to share my 2 cents on this age subject. I don't think the physical age matters much for reaction time, but i do agree with what Vo0 said, getting older means a shift of interests and less time for gaming. Also, the younger players are usually the underdogs to the experienced players. This gives them more motivation to reach the top. Older players who have peaked already just have to defend their 'title' over and over again. I remember my motivation was extremely high some years ago, putting my mind entirely into the game (cpm in this case). Since my experience wasn't that high back then i relied much more on aim and reaction time. Over the years experience started effecting my play, and i played more and more on autopilot (prediction shots from experience, positioning from experience). Thus, if age really mattered, you'd wonder why gellehsak (in his late 20's i guess) still rapes cpm.

tl;dr

Getting older doesn't make your reaction time slower, it's the lack of motivation and other interests that keep you from retaining your level. Look at the old professional guitar player John Williams and you will see he hasn't lost his speed in all those years.

I believe you took what I said out of context. My reflexes are still fine, in any game or sport I play.
It's just that as you get older and wiser, your interests in gaming on a high level starts fading, at least for me. I do not have the motivation/dedicated to play 4-5 hours a day like I did 7 years ago.

I heard you saying at androits streaming that you like still like cpm and so on, and if you like a game just play it. Come play with us, you can experience good duels with some guys like gaiia, hal, terifire, padawan, etc...

I don't have the time to go hardcore anymore either, but at least I try to keep my game on a good level so whenever I play I can enjoy the game on higher tiers, performing some midairs, good shafts, good timing... the usual, cmon man I'm sure you miss 3a.

It's just that as you get older and wiser prize money shrinks so badly, your interests in gaming on a high level starts fading, at least for me.

Yeah I don't think their age is the deciding factor in regards to having peaked or not. Rather their age is a factor because with age comes more responsibility, and less time for fun and games. We haven't really had anyone playing long enough, to know at what age people peak in gaming.

In traditional sports the physical peak is around 25 and 35 years of age, but in gaming, most have stopped practicing as much at that age. However, Alex Valle from the fighting game community is still competing at the high level and he's above 40 :D

I remember in an old interview with fatal1ty, that he said that he wanted to keep playing until he found the limit, but I guess he had to attend to other things too ;)

i dont think that age is a disadvantage, but more that youth is an advantage - it seems to me that players almost always make breakthroughs around age 14-16.
