Playing in a competitive environment with your friends is usually fun. So he could be having a good time, just not for the same reasons as we would imagine ourselves as having a good time playing the game. Maybe the mechanics of the game aren't as important for him, more so that he can make some form of living playing video games with his friends. Sure financial success is a big motivation, but I don't think we share his perspective on the matter. For us, regular players, who enjoy just playing the game, where there are no financial incentive, it makes perfect sense to only play a game because we enjoy the mechanics.

There is plenty of new blood (at least outside the US) enjoying the game for what it is and waiting for their chance to shine. So don't worry.

Someone should organize a small QL LAN in Las Vegas on December 3th since all those players will be there already!

Since quake players will surely take top spots at IPL they should indeed organise a QL LAN and funnel a percentage of their winnings to put up a prize pool for that QL LAN.

20% of the IPL prize pool would match the whole Intel Quake Live Duel Invitational Masters prizepool from Quakecon 2012.

They'd still walk of with substantially more from one SM tournament then they have from all the QL tournaments in recent years and at the same time support and keep the QL scene alive.


It would sort of set a precedent as well. Playing one game to keep another game healthy and kicking.

As far as I know the LAN only needs to have its network up and id can fire a server remotely. You can ask the Adroits organizers but I'm sure no id software employee travelled there to set the LAN server up.

we're talking about the basic elements of a first person shooter. aiming, movement, battle tactics and reactions will translate very easily.

other fps games have all of those, and movement is completely different anyway so i don't see your point.

quake and shootmania bare some similarities and in all cases where it matters (aiming, movement, tactics, etc...) the techniques required are harder to do in quake. this degree of depth enables a broad distinction between players of varying abilities. shootmania is a 'level playing field' as you put it because it's a limited game.

doens't matter if they have similar basic elements, you still have to adapt; not Rapha nor Cypher could win anything in the CS, Cod scene, within a year at least.

considering you made the account in 7 Feb 2012, well.....all really. Every time money goes into a fast paced fps game quakers go there, dominate and come back to q3 until there's money in something else.
q1, qw, doom1, doom2, hexen, q2, q3 (which was huge at its peak), avp2, ut2k3, doom3, pk (cpl tour hasn't been topped yet and everyone of this genre tried to win there), quake4, back to q3, ql, now sm (only one event won by some ut guys in a bizarre lan, but the rest all quakers), etc. are all the same q1/q3 guys over and over and over.

Think of it as dota1 players dominating LoL. I don't know a single top player that doesn't have a dota1 background, and at the same time playing sc/war3 or other rts makes it a lot easier to get into mobas.

Of course they disappear in tactical fps. That's another genre.

odds are a quaker would dominate just because there are so many pro/wannabe pro quakers out there. also, the UT competitive scene has always been tiny compared to quake's and the CS guys just never cared much for fast paced fps games, so it hasn't exactly been a fair playing field.

shootmania is the first game that I know of that brings in a fair bit of cs talent against quakers. instead of crowning the quake players champs in shootmania, how bout you wait and see. hell, didn't an unreal team win the last tournament?

btw, vo0 dominated in the only popular nonquake fast paced 1v1 game and he was never a q3 player(he went from q2 to cpm. source=him)

the reason quakers 'dominate' in other fps games is because quakers dont actually have a stable competitive franchise as opposed to most other professional gamers and are thus forced to play different games.

Now a lot of our quake pro players started to migrate to shitmania and the problem is that with every new tournament announced more quake pros switch to sm.

I would not worry that much. Before this 100k $ announcement shootmania was already dying. I expect this to be another CPL-like burst of fire that will just end in smoke. Afterwards, the better game will have the players back.

Two actually, one is a projectile rocket-like weapon and the second is hitscan rail. The thing is, there are no weapons, you shoot out of your "hand" so it looks like a disaster.

The defending team has rocket, the attacking team has hitscan rail and 3 points of health (3 rocket splash hits as far as I know)

This is by far the most stupid gametype you will ever witness in your life, I'm not even shitting you. The casters always attempt to make it look FANTASTIC AND AMAZING but in reality, nothing impressive has happened.

No.... honestly pk was playable in 1.35 over the net, I managed to play in a European cup from NA with ~120 ping.

It was difficult, of course, but it felt a lot better than any patch after 1.35.

Primarily what ruined the game was horrible patching and a complete disregard for the bugs that were well known before the tour even started.

Shootmania is probably good for pro Quakers to earn some money. If it allows them to make money and continue to go to Quake events, that's nice.

The only problem is when they focus on the game, like strenx for example. One of the best QL players in the world but no, cannot play anymore because of SM and contracts with his team or something.

Shootmania is in the spotlights and Quake isn't. Still, Quake survives and will probably survive for a long time. We've yet to see what Shootmania will be like when it's not a new and ultra promoted game.

Strenx Loves Quake and really Wanted to go to dh. Bur 100k tournament few days after dh is really short of time to really perform at his best in such an "important" tournament.

I know he loves Quake. That's why I am disappointed that such a talent (+ from France as a bonus) cannot focus on that game instead of another one with more $$.

in basketball things have changed tremendously since the 1992 olympics and a lot of great players stay in europe because they don't adopt well to the NBA rules, Juan Carlos Navarro comes to mind who did play for Memphis for a year and went back to Barcelona.

in general when it comes to American Sports leagues, they're not part of any association like FIBA, FIFA, etc. meaning clubs have no obligation to send their players to official world cups, olympics etc. in fact when you want to play as a NBA basketball pro you probably have to pay some out of your own pocket to cover the insurance in case you hurt yourself or your club's owner won't allow you to play. given these reasons it's also a fair assumption that the USA would be one of, if not the best nations baseball team.

The best American baseball players do not compete it any national world events, they aren't even allowed to in the Olympics.

Look, the game is actually pretty fun. If you've ever played quake capture the flag, halo, or left for dead, you will really enjoy this game. I know those statements that we made were clearly promotional, but in all honest we really do like the game. It is a lot of fun, as I said up there, anyone who played Quake would really like this game especially if they were familiar with capture the flag and team-work based mod's like that.

It's teams of 3. Each round is always 3vs1 and you alternate defense/offense. The attacker starts with a rail, and a rail only and it is a one-shot kill on the defenders. The defenders start with unlimited rockets, and it takes 3 rocket hits to kill the attacker. Each map has a flag (or pole) that you try and capture. All you have to do to win a round when you're on offense is either kill the 3 defenders, or stand on/around the pole for 1.5 seconds. To win on defense you have to kill the attacker, obviously.

First team to 6 rounds, win by 2 (possibly changing to first team to 9 rounds, win by 2)

I challenge anyone to try it, I have free cdkey's I can give you if you'd like to install it and I would be more than happy to jump on a server with you and show you the basics.

You can view first person, third person, a floating/following camera of the general areas that either the offense or the defense is around and a freefloat.

From a spectator perspective it is actually very friendly, so maybe you could elaborate on what you mean.

You have to keep in mind that this game is still in beta, and it's makers depend on feedback like this to constantly improve things. When Quake first came out, it wasn't until mods like OSP and CPM/A that really enhanced all the features of the game.

Followkiller, followpu, followflag are all first person view variants? Shootmania is always follow-killer in the first person POV. shootmania doesn't have powerups, people with a flag and already has freefloat.


I am unfamiliar with this third-person view you're speaking of that you somehow have the option of switching to while spectating a player? there is also no map-overhead view like there is in Shootmania.?

thirdperson has been in quake3 since the baseq3 times, it might've been cheat protected at some later stage for a while, but it's as simple as cg_thirdsomething 1.

perhaps, but having to enable cheats isnt really ideal. also, it will fix the camera behind the player, without being able to move the camera around the player.

on the other hand, shootmania has an open map style with no ceilings, allowing the spectator to use the overhead view to gain a very quick overview of the fight, with each players relative position easy to see.

tbh quake ctf is a bit more complex to spectate or play then shootmania.

What I meant was it's incredibly boring to watch. I like playing pool but I wouldn't call watching it exciting. On the other hand SC:BW looks like it's nothing even remotely fun at the korean level and that's a big part of why it's incredibly exciting to watch(atleast in my opinion). Yes, it is designed for esports and that is the biggest joke of it all. And I'll grant you that it's still in beta even though fazz already said the devs are taking the game in the completely wrong direction, but your argument still falls short because q3 started with 9 weapons, armors and a movement system(that can't be contained within one button). In short: a game this dumbed down can't be exciting to spectate and is improbable that it ever will be.

No offense to Fazz, but as far as I know he's not really involved with the developer-player feedback that has been going on with Nadeo and Ubisoft over the past few weeks, simply because he's already made his mind up about the game and has chosen not to play it.


No one is saying its a better game than Quake, it's not and I agree with everyone by saying its going to be very difficult if not impossible to make a game thats recieved as well as Quake was.

In response to a game being dumbed down being exciting to spectate? Have you ever watched counter-strike? Counter-strike is the most successful esports game in USA/EU. There is no way you can tell me that there is more to counter-strike than there is ShootMania in terms of spectating. If anything it is a lot more boring to watch a game of CS than ShootMania, find someone that knows nothing about the two games and sits down to watch a match of both to say otherwise. While there are "other" weapons in counter-strike, they all look and fire the same in the eyes of the spectator that knows nothing about what they are seeing. ShootMania has 3 distinct different types of weapons that look and fire nothing alike. Shootmania also has a movement system.

I say it has to NOT be dumbed down. What I meant with BW was there's people who don't play it and watch it. And not because they think "that looks fun". It's because it has depth. There's a myriad of numbers that do that for it. Conversely in SM you get "hit this guy with a rail or 3 rockets and he's dead". I'm sorry but even CS is not that dumbed down. You get 200 hit points, limited ammo, 4 types of weapons(knife, pistol, rifle, nades) and an economy aspect. And yes, cs is shit to watch but it's because it's slow as fuck. That's why cs viewers are cs players. CS doesn't have the speed, SM doesn't have the depth.

without wanting to argue any of your points - how are you able to commentate on the relative depth of a game when you dont even know what the weaponset is?

the 3 weapons are: the standard 'rocket', the 'rail' and the 'nucleus' i think its called, the proximity very slow rocket.

also, i think you will find that the most popular spectator sports are those with the simplest rules - football, tennis, golf etc. for some sports, the complexity of the rules can be deemed a barrier to a wider audience.

About the rules: if you compare football to swimming it's not that simple actually. And I don't think rules is the right word for this conversation. It's not like you can have 4-legged footballers the way you can have rocketlaunchers shooting tits in a video game. I think we're talking game mechanics here, because quake still has the simplest rules(actually rule, singular) of every game - kill the other guy. That doesn't mean for instance that the movement system has to be just pressing a button - it can be combinations of mouse and keyboard actions. There's your relative depth. Unless ofcourse they've changed that too. In that case go to line 1 :).

P.S.: Golf is a popular spectator sport? I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

i dont agree or disagree with anything your saying, but imo, the obstacles for DM games to gain traction and to get a non playing audience for instance will take alot of work and many things would have to change in my view.

shootmania is nowhere near perfect, they have made some questionable design choices perhaps but they have also clearly shown they were serious about making the game esport oriented. i think the visibility is great whilst not compromising the gfx, they have tried to design the game and maps with the spectator in mind and they are pushing a competitive gametype that they feel best interests spectators. clearly they put alot of thought into it - whether it was worthwhile is a different question...

ok so disregarding all the trolling, i think this is how "SOME" pros feel about the game, not sure which ones though, but if I was professional in quake (which im the farthest thing from), my mentality playing sm would be:

well quake has been pretty much the same thing over the last 10 years... people were playing ztn back in 2002, and its still in tournaments (or was until recently). Sure quake is the best game ever made, highest skill ceiling, yada yada, and its fun as hell, but its time to give something new a try, since quake won't change, perhaps sm will provide that fresh feeling once again of having to train up for an event and learn the game from step 1, where as training quake = play for 1-2 weeks before a LAN on the same maps in rotation for the last 2-3 years only to beat on amateurs in group stage and play decent players in playoffs uptil a challenging semis/finals (cypher said it took him 3 days to get to top shape before a lan? i read that in some thread). and yeah sure they're leaving one scene for another temporarily, but still, if not for the money, perhaps its for the competition. Also, people need to understand that they're sponsored by these teams TO PLAY SHOOTMANIA, they're not going to publicly come out and say shootmania is a horrible game otherwise they're gonna lose that sponsorship very fast.

I just watched rapha practicing duels in quake live yesterday with DKT.

No honest quake player would every give quake up forever. That adrenalin rush you get from a good even matched duel is better than any other game, ESPECIALLY slow paced simple minded gamed (Shitmania, CS, COD)

You can take the player out of the quake, but you can't take the quake out of the player.

I played many hardcore FPS, and I almost liked all of them, even Painkiller was fun, the problem was that when it was released it was too buggy and support was shitty. (Still, UT2004 at that time should have been picked for the CPL WT). The thing with Shootmania is, the game isn't bad, but isn't good either right now, it can be fun but it's a bit repetitive after a while. The good thing about Shootmania imo, it's that its intended to be naturally focused into e-sports, and its makers are aware of this, right now the game is too simplistic and it becomes random sometimes, but I think with some injection of depth, more movement possibilities, more weapons, it can become a great game. We also need to keep in mind that the game is still in Beta, so we need to wait a little bit more to criticize the game fairly. Obviously UT and Quake are way better games than Shootmania, they have years of development, these guys are kinda starting from scratch, so it's not a easy task at all, specially in this specific gaming area, the hardcore FPS one. We'll see in the future how the game evolves :)

i dont really see the big deal about this. the game is shit and yes it offends me that these guys put out the usual promotional bs. but i think all 3 of them (maybe not clock) would still play in quake tournaments if there were any.

more interested in seeing where shootmania goes after this tournament. it will be sad if simply putting money in will actually produce results. but then again people watch/play slow ass fps games so i wouldnt be shocked.

Their target audience CAN'T be Quake players, just based on the game itself. However, I think they're bringing in Quake players to hopefully squeeze any semblance of skill ceiling out of it as humanly possible. Based on the viewer numbers this year, the game will die after their money runs out.

It worked for LoL. I don't understand how, but it worked. I think it's one of those miraculous occurrences that happens once every millennium or so. Don't expect it to work for another game unless they have unlimited funds. Shitmania will be DOA.

LoL is miles more complex than shootmania. It's not chess like scbw is, but dota1 is a simplification as well.
