If there is a process for transferring/adjusting the old maps for quakelive I would like to take a shot of doing for 2-3 maps just to check how it works on quakelive :)

Presumably the "source" files (cant remember proper name) are completely unchanged, so you can open your old q3 files as per normal. And you will presumably save all your new work as the same file type so you could even open up your new map source in an old radiant :)

The only difference that im aware of is the .pk3 files are encoded differently for ql. The new radiant will simply support the different encoding method (before you had to save it in the q3 format, and then repack it into the ql .pk3 format with another tool, i used quickbms) which isnt a particularly hard task to do. .pk3 files are just repackaged .zip files after all :)

Someone like city or yellack or sync would know for sure though. Taking a bit of a stab in the dark here :)

So if I take for example developermap.pk3 (which is playable complete map in q3) open it in new radiant.
Save it with encoding for quakelive I should be able to test the map inside quakelive?

If that's the case that is awesome, because I have some older q3 maps which never got popular (not my maps) but I would like to tinker a bit with different textures and try the flow inside the quakelive and maybe even do a map in the future when I got more time.

Well I really don't care about that, it's just for testing and maybe just to delete q3 from the system since from time to time I just open q3 and play some old maps I loved but never got on the quakelive, this way I would eliminate that.

just be sure not to turn unpure and get banned, afaik ql's server check pk3's.

I've got a whole bunch of "unpure" .pk3' map files (every iteration of bst2 :O ), some alpha tdm maps, etc; never had a problem going online.

I don't see the harm in testing out maps for fun off-line, and it looks like id doesnt' too :)

if it does kick me, or get banned well after 4 years of ql...that would suck but I'm not doing anything that's related to cheating or hacking, it only for testing purposes and I do believe all the maper who are makeing maps for QL are doing this as well so...

Remember to set your new .pk3 files to read only, as when ql starts up it automatically deletes any "foreign" .pk3 files :S

Idd if this were the case, would be a lot of fun to repackage the several decent looking q3 duel maps (and other gametypes ofc) that never got a chance :) Would be fun just to run around them with double jumps, the stair physics change etc.

Yes exactly there are several ospdmXX maps for example who where very good to play either duel or tdm that's why I'm questioning this :)

Does this include a tool to reverse a .pk3 to an editable version? I made one of the osp maps and would like to tweak it a bit for qlive but dumped all the editor files for it long time ago.

It says "new engine" but that looks a rather dubious claim, with new features.

To simultaneously launch the game on all three platforms and changing to another idtech engine would be a huge undertaking; particularly if they are still releasing it for free. Does idtech 4 run natively on mac no problem these days? Honestly dont know :S

Therefore they must be doing a similar thing to the wolfenstein mod where they are re-working the lighting side of the engine, but still tech 3 at the end of the day. My guess anway.

It's a fairly heavily modified Q3 engine.

They implemented bump mapping and did some other work on the lighting/graphics side of things, implemented MD5 models which was apparently quite a lot of work, and IIRC they're redoing the netcode completely too.

Not sure what else has changed but I'm sure there's a few more things.

Yes, and some of the features that were to be included in HD have already been released (at least, I think they were intended for HD).

I don't think it will be released this year, but it could be pretty big. I think it will be awesome, but we'll wait and see.

unless you already know what you're doing and your map design is impressive enough by id's standards, itll never see the light of day. so as a newbie designer, my question would be what's the point of even getting your feet wet with this when i already know that no one will ever see my work?

personally i have a bunch of maps in my collection that i enjoyed playing throughout q3 that didnt particularly have groundbreaking designs but were still fun to play and enjoy amongst friends (q3hockey, q3pinball, flyby2, tag, mapel4b, xcm_tricks2, squarez, just to name a few off my head)

as long as QL continues to severely hinder user development and creativity from being apart of this game, itll never reach its full potential.

anyone else remember when creating custom content and map making was about exploring your talents and having fun on your creations with your friends? so much for that.

Well, I started mapping in 2009 motivated by the idea of potentially playing my maps in QuakeLive. If you are motivated enough there is a point.

my point is, it would make things alot easier for us map designers if we were able to beta test our maps within QL with our friends so that we dont have to go through that whole process. this is just common sense shit

There was already a command line toolchain to convert stuff back and forth in 2009 and it was still working in 2011, can't see why id would have suddenly changed the encryption scheme later on.

so i'll ask again, what's the point in adding support for this to gtkradient? people were always able to create q3 maps. if we cant play our custom maps from gtkradient on ql unless theyre chosen by idsoftware, theres no point in this.

Yeah but even if the map is intended for the game where the players are (QL), you can't use the textures from QL and include them in your custom Q3 pk3 and redistribute it for legal reasons. So should he use original textures and end up with a 30 mb file when it could be 2 only mb with the QL textures ? Or should he make a Q3 legal version to test it with buddies and waste a stupid amount of time retexturing it entirely for QL ?

Well he is right. The Radiant guys are doing a fantastic work but it still bottlenecks to the closed system that is QL at the end.

quake 4 needs to be added, the profile in 1.5 never worked, you have to link the quake 4.exe to build the map with the command line you can type in the ingame console to build maps

it does`nt matter, you have to use the doom3.exe to build maps too, in the command lined toolbar menu in gtk, and not q3build dos app
