There is nothing to discuss, because him being unbanned should have never even been an option in the first place, and there isn't a proper way to feel about it other than sheer bewilderment, and therefore anger, because it is one of the most absurd decisions id software has ever made, if not the most absurd decision, and by absurd I really do mean absurd.

I doubt he would even get rebanned if they caught him cheating again, as that would ridicule their original stance on the matter.

If you do (insert random drug here) and get caught during any major competition you'd get banned for a couple of years and then allowed to compete again. I really think that doing steroids or something like that puts a bigger mark than cheating in a game.

So where does it say in QL terms of service that bans are lifted after 15 months? As for your example, it's actually irrelevant. People are banned from sporting events and federations, not from practicing the sport itself.

Furthermore, sport federations have established rules regarding the specific punishment for each incident and the exact timeframe each punishment is to be carried out should they be temporary bans. QL doesn't have such established rules so your comparison with sports is useless in that regard too.

In any case your "sport ban" example would be applied to Clanbase, HoQ, and the like, because these are the QL equivalent of sporting federations. But, while in the case of a sport, the player would still be able to practice the sport after being banned from these events and federations, on the other hand QL itself is a software platform provided in it's entirety by id software with terms of use that are accepted by all before using it.

But yes, let's pretend for a second that we can apply your sporting ban logic to zeroql playing QL ... then why isn't every other cheater unbanned too? For example, of all the athletes banned from the Olympics for sterioid use, should the Olympic comitee only lift the ban of the athlete who donated the most money to his local sports center, and keep the rest of them banned?

Creating a new account and playing under a proxy is easy as piss, as you pointed out, and as for QL's anticheat, nobody really knows if it even exists as such.

Because of this, if someone's been banned and they want to continue playing, they will do, and whether they continue hacking or not is entirely up to them because the incentive you mention for them to play the game right doesn't depend on the how the community receives them...

Why? Because they know they fucked up big time if they got caught hacking and provided they aren't mentally challenged like detlew and daddy, they aren't going to bear a grudge against the community because they know very well it's their fault entirely, and while they are cheating they are also very aware of exactly how the community is going to receive them should they ever get caught, especially high profile players. That said, cheaters who aren't mentally challenged in some way are few and far between.

Basically, if "ex-cheaters" really exist, it's going to be themselves who decide to play legit , not whether the community predictably burns them at the stake or not (which they always do).

Furthermore, if they want to play legit, they must understand that their original account has been permabanned and they must create a new anonymous account to play legit on, because this is how the system should work and if they really become "ex-cheaters" they will understand the permaban on their account, agree with it and approve of the policy's existence (I don't actually agree with them playing again, it's just not avoidable). This is the principle of zero tolerance against cheaters. Permabanning accounts that are caught using cheats, no exceptions.

And because it is so easy to play QL regardless of an account being banned or not, and because it is up to the players themselves who must decide whether they want to start playing legit or not, I don't think using permabanning or tempbanning is going to change the amount of cheating going on at all, but there is one very good reason for choosing permabanning instead of temporary banning when it comes to QL:

When there isn't a working anticheat or even measures against fakenicking and proxies, the only weapon against cheaters that remains is the community's zero-tolerance stance against cheating, which up until recently was symbolically reinforced by id software's permaban policy.

Well now, the reinforcement of this message has disappeared with the unbanning of ZeroQL, but not only that, even some prominent members of the community such as yourself agree with this decision. Why do I have a problem with this? I'll repeat what I said earlier:

Actually, the question should be the opposite: the reason should be provided for additional action of lifting of the ban after some time, not for lack of thereof.
They let you back in, because in real life sports there is also side effect that you may be actually banning a person from his profession forever, which can cause socially more problems than his cheating in sports.
In Quake there is no social problems caused by banning someone permanently, so there is no need to make things more complex and do anything additional to banning (like lifting it off after a while) to compensate side effects.

I don't like the fact that he got unbanned and I think it's a big mistake from id. Developing a cheat is the worst thing one can do, not even sure how far his timer HUD went or how true are other rumours are (ringers on official matches, known cheater from other games, bad breath and uncultivated facial hair) but in QL he has lost his chance.

HOWEVER, I don't think it's the end of the world. Yesterday's event made me forget about the whole cheating drama and it made me think, let him play, there's nothing we can do about it except deny him access to community driven cups (ClanBase, FaceIt, #tdmpickup...)

It really shouldn't matter if game developers ban kids like this. Its up the community really. All LANS, leagues, cups, tournaments, and pickup servers should ban him from playing for life imo. Of course he'll prob just make an alias which is why it would be nice if we had something like steamIDs or a nickname/steamid/ip tracker website like some of my older game communities used to keep hackers out.

Bans are uniquely related, either by MAC-ID or IP-adress. Thus (as in my case or in some others), banned people can not play under a disguise, without circumventing the ban with other methods.

Do you really mean that a website should publicly show the hackers with some of the details (nickname, steamid, ip,...) as you mentioned?

But if they circumvent the ban, they would be able to have completely new data, which does not match anymore the past gathered data.

So this idea of a website with collected cheater player accounts sets the barrier higher, to circumvent bans, but is in the end yet another tool to warn other players?

The tracker pages still had their uses.. showed the history of each alias (when it started to get used). And whenever someone was raping who had a STEAMID over 7-8 digits eyebrows were raised and nerds would start investigating matters, it would often end up with a busted hacker (of course not always, some new players just get good the old fashion way too)

The truth is that zeroql and his friend were trying to help the game.

Botting was highly prevalent, and with no anticheat in sight, they took matters into their own hands. Developing a superior aimbot, one that all the cheaters would upgrade to, was part of their plan. However, it included a piece of code that QL admins could detect, which would result in the easy banning of all cheaters.

Testing of course was required, cheaters wouldn't upgrade to a non-working bot.

For this mighty cause, ZeroQL did what pained him most. Cheat. Playing against his dear friends, he railed and railed with the aided aim. The disgust he felt could only be matched by the pure wonder, this aimbot was more than he ever imagined.

It consumed him. Soon enough, he was botting in prize money tournaments. His true defeat was at the hands of his TDM idol krysa. Having finally acquired the ability to beat the one who had destroyed him time and time again, he used the humanized aimbot to its highest capabilities.

On the familiar corridors of ZTN, he won the match, but lost the war. He was caught by the community, and having to live with the self realization that his pure intentions had been twisted into the exact cause he was fighting against.

Exiled from his beloved community, and from all chances with Videl, he wandered the Xonotic worlds. Until one day....

Just like the world knows Romania cause of rroms fuckin up shit in other countries and we are not known by our true values, the quake community know RO cause of one cheater :) and not knowing anything about true players who love the game.
You don't deserve to work in a library, all that knowledge and art 'guarded' by such a low person. In some way I feel pity for you ..
One the other hand me and some ro quakers would really like to know you in person, maybe you could come at our next beer meeting? :)
