Quake Live needs something alike GTV or SourceTV, way easier to spec games for a lot of people and some people will be maybe more inclined to watch games for multiple reasons, why don't we have it yet?
Well of course GTV wasn't perfect but that was when? I guess if id really wanted to they could make something alike it that is good maybe it will have it's problems but they might be fixable unlike some streaming issues.
That's a pretty good question, perhaps it should be answered by the PR staff of the QuakeLive team ;)
Also, if GTV, multiple audiostreams (shoutcasts) and in the end combined to some sort of videostream. But the players should have the choice to join in directly imo, and should not being limited to videostreams only, where they can't have their own settings (graphics+soundwise).
GTV sounds awesome (I've never used it), but by this point it almost sounds like a feature too convenient. If people can just view games within Quake, there's no real incentive to stream. streaming is a potential avenue for more players to become aware of QL and play. so it's almost like it's in Id's best interest not to include it.
Well the thing is different things for different people, I like watching tdm and tomorrow there should be EC finals even if there was a thing such as GTV I would still watch the stream because I'd prefer the atmosphere with Disrepute and Vor also it's a great way of getting demos from those games since it should autorecord every POV, which is great for adminning for cheats and people enjoy watching demos either to learn or just watch their favourite player.
The bandwidth saving; running at silky smooth 125fps with your own config preferences/refresh rates, an unrestricted chat with no retarded smileys and power-tripping mods....
Who is to say that if GTV were to be implemented properly today it would be done so in a decade old fashion?
A properly implemented GTV would have:
The ability to select which audio stream/cast you would wish to tune into (or none).
A stream overlay would be inbuilt; casters would still have the option to embed their interview/panel/content stream into their GTV server that they setup; where each end user would have the choice of listening into it or not (yes for dis and vor, no for slasher etc).
And it would use HTML 5/the latest platforms to do so; finally getting rid of flash.
It would have all the benefits/customisation/smoothness and wonders that modern day GTV could provide; with all of the benefits that a stream (adverts....) can provide as streams are integrated into it.
So, until we have ridiculously high bandwidth connections in the relatively distant future; a modern day GTV with the correct implementation would be by far the superior platform, imo.
It is a bit too late for GTV implementation - video streaming is number one content delivery platform right now, becoming more and more popular every year.
I think I read somewhere that they prefer streaming aspect opposed to gtv, but don't quote me on that. Basically, they don't feel like adding it ever. But I would like to be wrong though.
I remember reading somewhere that something gtv like would give to much access to id's server infrastructure for people who know their coding stuff. I am a technological idiot though so it all can be wrong.
gtv is THE way for people to spec games, and by this I mean ppl who are also players and have the game itself installed, and have the knowledge to connect to gtv and use it.
unfortunately this is NOT the way any caster / event hoster / event sponsor and even the game maker would like to stream their content, you cannot advertise in gtv like you can with stream, or restrict / control / organize the content you "stream" with gtv like you can with a live stream. a live stream is also accessible to anyone who has proper bandwith to stream them (most people have it these days) given that they dont fuck up setting up their stream / own bandwith, so alot more potential viewers (players from the game and other games and even non gamers?)
in short, the odds are against gtv, I do however wish it anyway as a side option for the players themselvesas it has no cost whatsoever to set up at an event, the people who paid for the game should be entitled for such an option aside from the stream. Heck make it available only for prem / pro, it sure as hell beats alot of their other features they tried to sell so far.
I don't think QL absolutely needs GTV at this point, thanks to the slew of awesome streamers and casters that have emerged in it's absence, but it certainly would be great to have as an alternative to streams, especially the way Something described it. If it would be a platform that supports and cooperates with streamers, instead of competing with them.
Let's face it, GTV was a solution in a day and age when streaming was extremely difficult to pull off - i remember fighting with my winamp to sync audio casts with the games. Still, your own config, freely choosing which player to follow, unrestricted chat, full quality, non-bandwidth intensive - those are all features which would be still relevant to viewers today, and i'd love to see them as a feature. And sure, even one you have to pay for! I'd consider subscribing to QL just for that, and i don't even play the damn game anymore.
