Pretty sure Cooller and Rapha have the best timing.
Av3k also has a pretty beastly playstyle, he explained what he was doing while he was playing in a game vs ins, was amazing.

Raphas the only one timing 3 items. I remember a LAN (was it ESL?) from like 2 years ago - Av3k saw that, shook his head in disbelief and then tried to time 3 items also in pracc, couldnt do it.

Coollers not that good in timing as it may seem, but hes perfect in remembering item cycles. Check his old ztn / nodm9 demos from 2003-2006, theres plenty to learn. And yeah, he was timing shards whenever he was low.

Most players seem to time only two items, some of them -including Cypher- even just one, the mega, running the rest of the items just by feeling.

Btw back in Q3, If-22 was a special case in this matter - he wasnt timing any items, he was timing his opponents.

What about czm? how many items does he time? does he times shards/hp bubbles too? i heard he had beastly timing, prob not so much now but in q3.

EDIT: also my memory is faded but i think cypher in some interview said he times 2. As for rapha i asked him ingame and have a clear memory that he said he tries to time 5.

Well puritan the question is more what do you consider as timing.

For instance I hardly ever really look at the time but my 'timing' is accurate enough to a few 100ms (for all armors + mh on a map). As that I know which item spawns at what times relative to the other items. (the relation itself could be measured in movement speed I guess)
And if it's an official you throw in the hp bubbles there as well (relative to the armor closest to it).

So on one hand you could say that I time all items. But on the other if you ask me 'which second is the next ra' I'd go... hmmm in about 5 jumps time ;) (if you actually want the time then I'd have to think about that)

I think most pro's calculate it in a similar way.

(and yes hitsu is already getting excited that he can go say how arrogant I am to be talking about myself and comparing my to "pro's")


btw If-22 didn't time his opponents... if-22 just waited for sound queues and then +backed.

What you had described is basically logical thinking that anyone applies to the game with relevant quake experience. Its almost every pro does it all the time ("timing by feel"), but its a two-edged sword as things become dire when the opponent expects you to think logically and starts to delay items / reverse the circulation... (Cooller anyone?)

Actual timing it is what it is: you count the item times and remember them, now if somoene does that with 3+ items without losing out on much in the other areas its outstanding. Of course a situation when you required to remember 3+ times is rare, also if someone sucessfully does that it is because of their great multitasking abilities, being able focus on fights / positioning without forgetting the ongoing counting process.

Why would "my way" be a 'two-edged sword'... I can even time stuff based on where/when I see my opponent. While other people have to hear the item being picked up and have to remember the time.
Also I 'only' have to keep track of what both I and my opponent did in the last 35 secs. So I can see tendancies in his play much more easy and think about how to get an advantage from that.

When you start to link movement to item times the game becomes so much more logical and you can even see through item delays because when your opponent does that you can notice them being somewhere earlier/later than you expect them.

If you think there is any added value in timing by a clock then please do so. For me time in ql is representable in movement.

Strenx was extremely good at timing 2 items, but to the half second. When you're timing 4 items, you're going to be off by a few seconds here and there. And let's get real. You are probably timing 2 items, and remembering the sequence of the other 2. Like "I picked up lower YA at 23 and got RA 5 seconds later. So lower YA at 48, then get to red, and mega is 53", etc. But Strenx was great. He'd feel out sequencing and the YA's, but red and mega, he knew to the half second! Always knew EXACTLY when to switch to RL, juke, and then dive. Saved him in a lot of contesting fights!

Time 2 item in serious games takes realy much much skill (time to 0-1second interval). Noone times 3 items! I AM SURE. As alot guys mentioned, they doing this, by "circle" and feeling. I always time 1 item and thats more then enought , becose after that item it's easy to orient on other spawning items.. If you get " perfect circle" in furious/lostw , it can look to you ,thtat you time 4 items, but, it's just 1 item + orientation.

I usually time 2 items. But sometimes also 3 or 4 items depending on situation.
When I am active I time 3 items very easy, but IF I do it makes it harder to think about all the other things I also need to think about(predict enemy/trap him/postions etc)....

I feel like timing 2 items is easy as shit, however the 3rd item makes it harder. Kinda like adding balls to juggling :)

Czm. I've heard once id failed to prog the in-game timer and since then they hired czm to time all items in QL simultaneously and push a special button when an item is supposed to respawn.

Dahan was really impressive vs cypher on ztn. Dunno why most people are forgetting him.
