I love how complex and competitive the game is, and I consider it still as one of two games worthy of the progaming title (with the second being starcraft: broodwar).
The game allows each person to play the style according to his/her personality and despite being limited by size of the arenas, it gives you infinite freedom in your decisions.
Also I love how this game is friendly to spectators - youre instantly dragged into the action, two guys killing each other. But the longer you watch, the more you see how many things a player has to manage in order to win.

I feel like the quake series doesn't have a skill ceiling.
When I play other games (mainly race games / rts / other fps) I feel like 'if I manage to do this action perfect --> I cannot be beat' but in quake I feel like the succes you can have is not dependant upon perfect actions but rather perfect choices.

So hmmm (you could say) the skill in quake is not directly linked to eye hand coordination / timing ability etc. but rather in how good you can counter what your opponent does.

To be honest, i like quake cause of spawn rape and random spawn system, it is SO FUN for me to spawn kill people, only reason.

Still quake live has random(within a subset), but not completely random spawns.
So QL has my favorite spawn system.(don't know q4 spawn system)

I definitely see arguments against and in favor of randomness in games.
Especially in the RPG community many appreciate randomly generated terrain and encounters, while others despise these.

Although in a 1v1 mp game, it is hard for me to understand its appeal.

The feeling of LGing 55 on a newb. LGing 45 on a scrub and LGing 40 on a pro. And then hearing them all say the same thing "fucking cheater" and disconnecting.

The feeling of hitting 17 rails in a row while some guys go to spectator to demo you.

The amazing feeling of hitting a sick rocket combo with an air rocket finisher - and right after the enemy model explodes, that player quits the server.

It's those aspects that keep me going, smashing scrubs over and over. Hearing them say 'wow you're not banned yet? wtf?' 'if you're legit i'll retire from quake' 'lol downloaded skills' etc

Not my fault they get miserable. I just play the game - they get mad for their own lack of skill or because of their preconceived notion that I cheat, which makes their domination at my hands that more rage worthy.

Which is why it makes it more fun for me. Seeing people who kick me and cuss at me rage every time I am on a server where they can't make the rules. It's just karma.

First of all quake1, quakeworld, quake2 (which is my personal nostalgic game) and quake3 are better than quake live. It's no contest, maybe even quake4, and with that said:

Because everything in quake (in general) is unique now. While all other current mainstream fps games are 90% the same quake is 10x more complex so it never ever gets old. Sure we all have breaks, whether months or years, but we all keep coming back to it because there's nothing like quake out there.

And movement is sexy, addicting I'd say. There's not a single fps game released in like the last 7 years that has enjoyable movement.

And quake duel is by far the most entertaining videogamerz to watch, especially if you are a fanboy of someone, even when I have never been much of a dueler myself (I'd say around 1800-1900 level if someone wants to throw shit lol).
It's the only one that isn't just an absurdly simply game in which its top players are undertaker12, this both about the potential and who are we watching (not hotshotgg struggling to get out of high school but phds and entrepreneurs). In other words this is the only videogame I know in which brains > mechanical skill or playing time, and those 2 are something kids have.

edit: For example I remember watching the legends cup in a match between cooller (fanboy) and stermy on dm13, and at one moment cooller threw a rocket from plasma shards to the bottom (lg ammo) that the commentators didn't catch but was a "this is cooller" moment, even stermy seemed surprised from his rare move. You don't see that in other games, in which the omfg moments come just from repetition (playing time, including knowing the situations, angles, positioning and whatnot) and pressing inputs faster than others.

Show me any half decent player who didn't spend months in game. The fact that 99% of quakers have done this already doesn't make it any less practice, experience and mechanical skills demanding.

of course they matter and a lot, but aren't the only things present and that's what makes it unique. In quake you actually have to think, while at the same time considering more factors than in other fps games (timing and items play is a good example) and it's twice as fast as the rest.
The fact it is possible to win games and tournaments with brains while losing most combats is just superb, and that goes beyond knowing the sweet spots.

Another factor I forgot is that there's more gameplay freedom in quake, which makes awesome fragmovies possible. This was a bit lost in quake live though.

The biggest factor is maps in vq3's case and gameplay itself on cpm's, but there are more.

Can't find the video right now, but there's a stomp on dm6 2v2 tdm match between toxjq + someone (can't remember who) that completely illustrates the gameplay differences on osp.

IMO Quake is just king of its genre (fast paced FPS) for many reasons, I like that genre so thats why I play its best game... overall I think quake is the best game ever, I mean, taking all the quakes as a whole game, even though thats stupid, thats just how I like to put it, because I would play any quake over any other fast paced FPS out there atm.

because when you like fps games and play the likes of cod2 or so for a long time, one day you'll see a L1nkin quadrun with vertical railguns while running 600ups in a fragmovie and think "man this is SO awesome!". You go try it and well, it is even better.

cpm ctf/tdm is possibly the greatest thing to have been invented in fps history. the speed and precision required, as well as the teamwork and co-ordination needed, outdoes any other fps out there for me. the movement is perfect, the weapons are perfect, and the game is near-perfect for me (not to mention i like a game where armours are actually worth something). seriously, would you rather play this or camp behind a wall playing peep show sniper/railgun?

This video sums it up greatly. The atmosphere of this movie is incredible by the way. For an old quaker, not as old as them though, it's still quite unique. Very nostalgic, literally.


The extreme nature of Quake is a beauty of its own. The feeling where you can own people, whether you're a noob with luck or a veteran with skills, is incredible, you won't get that feeling in any other multiplayer game by far, not even in SC. You always know that you play something special, you are being one of the elitist by just trying this game out. It's great. When you love it, it's even greater.

There's this thin line between hating the game and loving, it's a constant feeling, and everyone who touches it, feels the same way at some point(s).

One second can change your whole game, whole mindset for the game as a title at the time being. The complexity of Quake is incredible, no one can and no one will master it completely. And no one will actually understand it, unless you touch the game for few weeks.

You can always improve. And even when you improve, you will hit further walls. It's hard to admit that someone is legitimately better than you when you feel you're playing your very best, but deep inside you know it. So you have to fight with it. You always fight. It's Quake.

Because of the fluidness of the pixel-precise, fast-paced action (to the point, where just watching a good player is entertaining too), movement, weapons, balance, sounds (especially the doppler effect, when you catch up to your own rockets - even leaving them behind), configurability and DEPTH - the professionalism that oozes from every bit of the game. And Sonic Mayhem, of course. Quake III Arene Noise is such a pure win. One of my favourite albums of all-time.

There's also another aspect: in Quake 3, the splattering guts after an instant 180° mid-air rocket-flick can be sooo satisfying..when you swiftly sliding through the rain of gibs, looking for the next frag - or when you watch your rocket travelling in the air for 4 seconds before scoring a mid-air kill - or when you hit an insane pixelrail from a quick and cheesy plasma climb..and so on. Hardcore action, yeah baby. <3

Hell, on full graphics, many DeFRaG maps are STILL beautiful. I love the GFX too, even when I play lego-Quake 95% of the time.

Lastly, you can meet nice people from all over the world and the interaction with them can transcend the game itself. For example, in 2007, I get to know a spanish girl in OSP. She noticed my movement and we started to talk. At first, about the game and laters, about other stuff as well. Soon, we started to use Skype.
She is cute, funny (in a psychopatic way : D), witty - and a sweetheart in the looks-department (154 cm, ~45 kg, flat chest, baby-face <33).
Thanks to her, a friend of mine had a place to go to when he was leaving our country for Spain. In the end, all thanks to Quake.

Of course, there're WAY more fucktards in the game, but you can always use cg_teamChatsOnly 1 and ignore to deal with the trash.

itz a pure action environment and i couldnt stand it to loose at the beginning (after first month i won first games). but now, im just addicted and i play brainless. Fun is is almost gone.

Quake is the only game that turns me from mild mannered, normal adult into a rage quitting, keyboard slamming whiner.

apart from the awesome weapon balance, the diverse vertical maps and the tactical depth of some gamemodes, idtech3 just has this visceral feel to it. You know when you make a mistake that it was your fault, every movement you make translates into the game.

none of the newer fps engines can even compete with that. ontop of ping you get 30-50 ms of delay for every input that you make because there are 4 million lines of shader and physics code that are executed for every tick. After you played idtech3 for a few years those new engines just feel sluggish and boring.

Every other shooter I play just feels limited. I've played a lot of other shooters over the years, but nothing comes close to quake. There are so many levels of skill (I'm nowhere near good) and I just wanna keep climbing the ladder, falling back when I quit for a few months, taking new steps when I start again. You're just never "there".

The way it feels, aimwise, the movement, the speed, everything that's happening at the same time. It can be a very frustrating game sometimes, but NEVER boring.

For me CA is so good, so much brain involved.

Sleek, fast, fluid and just plain sexy movement. The fact that you can use weapons to perfect this movement.

its fun, its challenging (and used to be competitive), and its smooth... so very smooth :)

For me it is timing items and the rocket launcher. The prediction, the traps, mindgames it is like a game within a game, and the fact that youre not forced to play the "who have the better reflex" game, although as a quaker youre about to roflstomp any other game by default - it is just not a challenge anymore, it feels like what can be for Fedor Emilienko to start a barfight...

Even an ape can be taught to push a button when seeing a signal but not denying being a true master of lg or rail is an art of its own right too.

And quake unlike other games claim to be actually do improves you many ways: it teaches discipline, the right approach to challenges, analytical thinking, hand-eye coordination, coordination by hearing, reflexes...
For me the best indicator for it when i hop on to some CS 1.6 (supposedly one of the most competitive FPS now, esp. in the COD era) server every half a year, usually being wasted beyond the point that it makes pointless to load up QL and straight up owning the server. Being called a cheater, WHer, etc but dont do anything suspicious, its just my prediction is much higher level (grenades, prefiring, spam), position myself much better than the avg. player there, can imagine better whats going around me just by hearing some noises and also being at least on-par as far as reflexes go. But when they spec me they see nothing just high level raw skill and very outlandish play (as i dont have any CS routine).

Sometimes the server literally rioting, than i tell them to calm down, im a quake player, and theres always some older dude who goes like "uhm, ok...", than telling them i'm legit :D I wonder what it would be like on a COD server...

Anyway this is what i love in quake: the freestyle nature of it and that it improves your mind and body just by playing it.

First ever online game (CoD 4 - around 2009, 8 player FFA, unknown map) with serious fps-drops---> after a 50 / 6 stat, nice messages and ban at the end of the round.

Honestly i love the fast paced gamestyle of it. For me, it all started with defrag. The ability to move at an unlimited ammount of speed was something that i could enjoy for years. The CPM physics gave me so much fun , and they add so much complexion to the maps. Essentially movement in general. oh and the movies <33

When I am tired, I play quake and if I am lucky I happen to have a really close game. My heart beat is up the roof, feel the rush; something which I do not get playing other games.

I still play Quake for a few reasons:

Because I grew up with it and spent most of my teenage years playing it. I feel like it has one of the most fluid and interesting player movement systems out of any games I've played. It's very challenging and even after playing for years, you can still get better. Quake offers amazing opportunities to extend the game and be creative with mods, third party programs, scripts, configs, this is a huge plus for people like me who have to tinker and mess with everything. There are other FPSes that offer many of the same features (and they're probably based off of Quake) but taken as a whole, I have not found a FPS as dynamic and entertaining as Quake

I cannot express it with words. I got hooked the very first moment I played Quake 3 Demo vs. bots 11 years ago, using only keyboard and no mouse. Since then it has been my favorite game, and for me Quake Live is just a better version of it.

Because it allows me to accomplish everything I've failed at in real life.

And because I've accomplished nothing in Quake...

2) The game itself soothes me
3) The sound of my lg not leaving a targets hitbox.

1- the game is a great stress relief of RL
2- while still being competetive enough to give a good thrill, "good stress" so to speak
3- 10x superior to any sort of cod game, its clones, basically the only "real" option for online fps (not counting cpm, xonotic, warsow, respect but just not my style)
4- dat feeling when you pull of something crazy

The history of the game, the epic tournaments, the fast paced gameplay, learning strafejumping, using the brains to time, cooller, and ofcourse for those of us lucky enough to play Quake1 when it got out was so great, full 3d and those crazy castles full of strange creatures... i could go on forever but basically <333

Well this goes back to 2008 or something...I was playing cod back in those days, my classmate told me to try Q3A.. We downloaded the demo and played it on LAN in the classroom (with more ppl, ffa dm17) So when I got home I downloaded the game, played it a few times. However this same person told me about QL being in closed beta, so well here I am. But I really started playing serious when I decided to get of my lazy but and do item timing, that would be 2 months ago. However, it's still great to relief stress. Also I find the community really unique, you have a few rotten eggs laying around but most of the community is really helpful. Oh yeh and <TDM!

The reason why I stll play and keep coming back: I don't care for those new school games.

...and these are all reasons why I feel that this game will never die unless it is completely replaced by something just as good. :3

I LOVE QUAKE SO MUCH... I HAD TO QUIT IT ALSO!! Still got installation files of each version, deleted QuakeLive account.

ADDICTED to playing and QUIT... I QUIT... and negotiated that to step down to start WATCHING INSTEAD!...

This way is great because I know when the video ends and I can see how much time has past (one game is usually 10mins, best of 3 = 20/30mins) and I can choose at the end of each video if I really 'need' to keep watching or if I'm satisfied that was a gg... and PAUSE anytime... before I was late for dinner, dates, everything...

I like the pure finesse and aesthetics of the combat and movement. Cypher is the embodiment of this for me. It isn't just that that he wins, it's how smooth and stylish he looks while doing it.

Every once in awhile you get really loose and start hitting those beautiful shots, running around at mach speed, and it feels like anything is possible.
