You're looking for the word praised, rather than appraised. It is praised because it is light and durable, it has a good simple shape, and it has a great sensor. It is widely used by a number of very good players, and has been around for a long time so people have gotten used to it.

The sensor isn't really that great.... only good thing about it is the fact that it doesn't have prediction.

I bought over 15 mice and i can say that Microsoft IE3,WMO,IMO have best FLAWLESS sensor, yes, it has low malfunction speed, but it can be increased by overclocking USB..

Even the much loved wmo sensor gets negative accel and has a malfunction speed according to esr mousescore, so really we haven't yet reached a perfect sensor.

Well, with the mouse becoming expensive it's no longer good as newer mice perform just us good but no longer need USB polling rate changes, or new skates, and so on.

B. It has a shape that works for just about everyone.

C. The weight distribution inside the mouse is very uniform. This is something often overlooked by mice manufacturers.

D. The sensor has a very steady feel to it. This might be due to the 9000 fps, it's hard to say. Despite being locked at 400 CPI many players still love it.

E. 500 Hz moves the perfect control speed up to 1.55 m/s, which is absolutely fast enough for me. The malfunction speed is quite a distance from the end of the perfect control speed, so you get negative accel there and not mouse craziness.

F. It is very cheap compared to either mice. Often costing something like $ 12.

G. It is a durable mouse. Unlike a lot of razer products you don't have to worry about something breaking, not for a long while anyways.

H. They work great on a variety of pads, including the icemat.

Cannot, it obviously depends on how much you are using it. I have heard people usually ruin it in few months. At ~10$ a piece it's not a bad deal.

I have had several Razer Products in the past and now I'm using a Razer Tarantula and DeathAdder 3.5G. The Tarantula is over 5 years old and still works like a charm, DA is about 1.5, killed my old by smashing it on the table during a ALL CAPS RAGE moment. No problems so far with the new one.

Never heard about that. What I heard and experienced though is that when you stop scrolling, you can stop between two "states" and it may eventually fall on one side or the other. I don't use the mouse wheel for Quake Live for this reason but saying it is unusable is very exaggerated if you were talking about that.

Yeah, ok, it's not completely unusable. There are even scripts where you need to scroll 2 times and prevent unwanted random scrolling. But, you can't exactly say that's how normal mouse wheel should behave.

The way I had one die is that the sensor started cutting out randomly, probably due to a lose wire or something damaged in the ic. It did take quite a bit of abuse over the years..

They do "act weird", doesn't mean they are broken.

There's a bug in which the scroll wheel sometimes clicks by itself, or rather the "ticker" inside isn't strong enough to keep the wheel from rolling forward or back.

It's kind of a minor issue really, but if there was ever a wmo remake someone should strengthen it to prevent it from happening.

Because Quake players have never appreciated advances in technology and willfully continue to live in the past (see all the people with Pentium 4's still running XP on this site). You don't see this with any other game & the gamers there choose to use the superior products instead of the 10 year old ones just for some "nostalgia" value.

Yes, nostalgia for the old mice who crush the newer ones just by a usb rate overclock. Without jitter or high LOD or being picky about the pad. What a bunch of retards we are.

Plus give it a 5 years and the 1.1 sensor family mice will cost more than razers once they all get discontinued.

as an example, my g400 has
- a better sensor (wmo gives me neg accel on mid sens)
- more responsive buttons (feels like my ping goes up by +10-20ms when playing with wmo..)
- better mousewheel
- better skates
- no need to run windows in test mode to get 500/1000hz
- higher build quality, wmo feels like a cheap piece of plastic (ok, not as bad as razer mice, but still..)

and last but not least I can buy it at a local re-seller for < 30€. Have fun with your china wmo for 20 bucks.. :)

also, most of us are not 14 anymore and don't use the pc exclusively for gaming. 400 dpi is a pain on a high resolution (multi-)monitor setting.

I'm not saying there aren't good new mice out there. I'm saying they're not that many. Yes, the g400 is good, zowie is good. What about g100? G9X? Steelseries anything? Razer anything besides DA?

And it's kind of stupid to come to the site that obsesses over mice and say that the only reason people like a certain mouse is nostalgia. Why? There is not only black and white. Even if only few modern mice outperform the wmo, why would you stick to an inferior mouse? The only valid reason I can see is that you've used it for a long time and cba to get used to a new mouse. And I'm neither a fan of razer products nor do I think that 8000dpi make sense. But again, there is not only black and white - even when using my single 1680x1050 lcd I want 800dpi (not 400 or 8000!).

Well for one thing it doesn't cost 50$. And I agree it's not black and white. For instance the abyssus which will do 3+ m/s has that gamble where you might have a jittering model. And if you don't, the LOD is still higher than the WMO. Also the abyssus doesn't work on icemat. Now someone like z4muz might find the WMO inferior because of the negative accel, but toxjq is going to say the abyssus is because he uses icemat. Like you said it's not black and white.

We have WMOs in our uni's library and to be honest I dont like them at all, it might be due to the lack of appropriate mousepad but nonetheless, I'm not impressed

If someones a fan of them though, we would love the library, WMOs all over the place, 300 or more :))

personally I've never felt a better sensor than the WMO one. At 500hz it feels the best out of any mouse I've tried. It being 400dpi sucks, but if you don't care about DPI it's really good. not a lot of pos/neg accel (feels like none to me), no mouse correction, nothing. I've tried a lot of other mice, and the sensors feels blocky, or not accurate at all. The Zowie AM is good, but it still doesn't feel as good compared to the WMO. If they made a WMO at 800dpi I'd use that forever and ever and ever.

This. While I have not tried as many mice as some people here, the 1.1 sensor at 500hz (wmo etc) is the only one that feels sexy.

That being said, somebody should make an article, or a guide, regarding everything of the wmo: hystory, from the origins through the notable events/players that used it, pros, cons, and everything related on how to set it to higher frequencies, reduce the lod, attack the cord, etc. etc.

the wmo sensor is very good and it doesnt look like a cheap mouse, i am amazed how many mice sold at the store have either a cheap look or completely bs sensor that right away feels bad (bought some a4tech gaming mouse the sensor is completely bs and it looks completely cheap and it probably cost same if not more than wmo). wmo should be sold at every store possible, i still have one half broken wmo had to glue the mouse1 button back, still better than a4tech one. there actualy is a mouse with a better sensor (logitech mx300 if i remember). wmo + 500hz is just all around better mouse even if it only has 3 basic buttons setup. maybe there are better mice like razer or somth but thats just too bs to pay so much for a mouse, high dpi is bs it doesnt make a more precise movement just makes the cursor move around faster.
