what are you on about? what does it matter where the income is coming from if it's promised and signed? Are you saying that one job is better than the other so that one deserves not to be paid?
There are HUGE number of people not getting paid by their employer and/or are late for months in 'serious grown up' jobs.
well he should take it as a life lesson, don't trust random ppl /organizations and don't perform a task without compensation.
who in their right mind would keep working without pay for half a year, in a first world country that would just be ridiculous.
to be fair, own3d is no different from a raft of internet companies, and he did sign a contract where the compensation for the tasks he was completing was enumerated.
its not just online and with streaming companies that you get companies/people like this...
i guess your post was meant to point out that making a living via playing games is unrealistic/immature etc
i kind of agree with you since i don't think i could ever rely on gaming alone to support myself, let alone a family, cause of the lack of "proper legal terms" there is to this
i dont know enough about this matter so i can't really discuss anyway :|
Only like 1000 people (to say something) can live out of the bubble called e-sports, and even those will deal with issues from time to time until it bursts once again.
Considering this is all about marketing that dude probably wasn't e-popular enough so he was dispensable and not eligible for a similar contract on twitch, which is by far the biggest on their specific market.
hes not making a living off gaming but rather off broadcasting. such things are new and undevelopped so it kind of is just playing games, but that will change as competition and expectations increase.
maybe its the best option he has. perhaps the pay can be good? i imagine you get paid in euros/dollars and if you are in eastern europe or something the purchasing power can be quite high i guess? theres also the fact that if he gets in early to a sector that will surely expand someway or another, he gains a competitive advantage and more money.
even working in mcdonald's is better, since you always get paid, and here in gaming it's never sure when ur getting paid, or if ur even gonna ever get paid lol :D
depends, in a local McD he would get paid local wages. when streaming he is getting paid in euros or dollars which will have much more purchasing power - nominally and relative to western european standards he may not be earning much, but in his own country it will be worth alot more etc.
not discounting the underlying point about trying to make a living in gaming is hard and uncertain - it clearly is, but its the same in many other lines of work (i work in recruitment, and its not uncommon to have payment disputes with clients all the time...), and gaming has made alot of improvements on this front recently.
given a choice of earning minimum wage in a McD or on Twitch/Own3d the choice would be easy for me, simply on an job satisfaction level. gaming content etc is a diverse and growing subsector of the games industry imo, and there will be more growth and opportunities there, and being one of the first and most recognised gives him alot of visibility and expertise i guess...
this isn't good because of the obvious, but also because Twitch will be the only one around soon, making it a lot harder to compete with them. Twitch is fantastic now, they fixed every issue I ever had with them (mostly technical), but if they had no competition, my problems would still probably exist. E-sports is already iffy enough, having one streaming provider wouldn't help.
Esports is what boy bands were in the 90s... There might a Justin Timberlake come out of it but 10 years later you wont even remember 95% of them, might even meet some behind your local McDonalds cashier.
What can be seen on the link is the ancient "promise everything - than overran the poor kid with the legal steamroller" strategy, except the guy is a bit older so representing his side a tad better, still stupid as fuck though, like everyone having to rely on video games income in their 20s (30s?).
There are 2 different types of 'companies' in esports.
1) those founded and owned by gamers for gamers. Which pretty much all have financial problems.
2) those funded by money hungry animals from hell. Who's only objective is to gain revenue. And they will lie / cheat / sell out people with no remorse what so ever.
So he works there for 5 years, never get's payed on time or not at all, then when he finally decides to leave he leaves TWO WEEKS before his contract is up so he also screwed himself legally.
