glad to hear it works. i've used cards from both companies, but if this zero blur lightboost tweak is so good, then it's pretty much the ultimate selling point for nvidia imo.

lightboost works with AMD cards, too. Just get ToastyX's tweak. I've run it on both perfectly.

AMA definitely works best at the high setting.

I'm using lightboost in ql and when monitor in 3d mode (which is necessary for lightboost) u cant manipulate many options such like AMA or instant mode.

Tried q3 with com_maxfps 250, r_displayrefresh 144, AMA premium, instant mode ON and seems like it's a bit more smooth than with lightboost. For me these two variants: lightboost that works only at 120hz and 144hz with com_maxfps 250 are so close.

btw, maximum value of com_maxfps in ql is 125.

Good input, although I think you must've misread the pcmonitors review. He's basically saying that high does the job just as well as premium, but that premium introduces new problems. I also saw the pcmonitors reviewer write in some other forum that High definitely was the way to go.

I noticed if you turn on VSYNC, LightBoost is much smoother than 144 Hz. But that's only good for solo gameplay.

For VSYNC gameplay, uncap your framerate -- allow it to reach 600. I've found LightBoost starts to look smooth again, if you got the GPU horsepower.

LightBoost makes each frame so sharp that it is very easy to see microstutters. It's the same reason why 30fps-vs-60fps is easier to see apart, than it is on LCD. The very slight non-objectionable motion blur of 144 Hz helps masks the microstutters, and makes it look smoother.

So LightBoost is very demanding on stutter management -- if your graphics card can cap out at 250fps, then maxfps 250 looked juddery for me (it generates an ugly 10Hz beat frequency harmonic 120+120 with 10fps remaining); maxfps 600 looked better for me on a powerful graphics card in older games if you wanted to turn off VSYNC. Your human eye really can't tell it apart but you can definitely easily tell the beat-frequency harmonic. For example, maxfps=241 shows up as a beat frequency of 1 judder per second at 120Hz, if I'm successfully running at 241fps, if you look at fast-panning motion carefully. You really want a much higher maxfps if possible to help make the frametimes more consistent and avoid harmonics between Hz versus framerate.

It's amazing how judders look different between max_fps 250 and max_fps 600, if your GPU is powerful enough to go faster than 250 (e.g. older Source Engine games with a powerful GPU).

If you want to minimize motion blur AND minimize stutters AND maximize smoothness, you need to turn on VSYNC on -- but then that introduces input lag (bad for competitive gameplay). 120fps LightBoost blows away 144fps non-LightBoost. So we're in a Catch-22 situation of doing good stutter-management.

If you have an nVidia card go for lightboost. I don't see any reason why you wouldn't. It's awesome.

What's your thought on the viewing angle?

I found that in order to have the best viewing angle I had to tilt the monitor down so that it's almost vertical. And then I have to position my head so that my eyes look almost straight at the upper edge of the screen.

If I positioned it so that my eyes looked straight at the middle of the screen then the upper part (about 4-5 cm or so would become slightly darker. I tested this in Black Mesa. Not quite happy about this, but I suppose I will get used to it.

Yeah, my experiences are exactly the same as yours. The viewing angles are pretty horrid indeed. As kalston points out, though, it's one of the inevitable drawbacks we have to swallow to get TN responsivity.

i currently have a samsung syncmaster 226bw that's showing some since of age so I'm thinking about replacing it. my gfx card is a gigabyte radeon hd 7950.

i don't care about 3D stuff and i don't really want a 27" screen for gaming.

If you like smoothness, then definately, yes. The XL2411T is amazingly smooth at 120/144hz. It's very very close to a CRT.

Tip for you: In Skyrim, use 85hz.
In 100, 120 or 144 you will get physics bugs, and 60 is not so smooth. 85 is not as smooth as those frequencies above, but notably smoother than 60.

And also, in Skyrim don't turn brightness on the monitor lower than 80, or you might notice some strobing/flickering effect when you move your (in-game)head slowly. You can lower brightness in drivers or in game if you want, but I think Skyrim looks really good with brightness of 80.

turned down brightness to 35 but now you can see some flickering here and there as mentioned in this post

the game feels so much smoother now though. but damn, it fucked up my fov settings in quake.

No, it works with AMD cards, too. Search for ToastyX's app for the easiest way to turn it on.

Problem with other people's settings is that every monitor and every environment is different. A lot of online calibration settings I have found are total BS for me, but where they are useful is as a baseline for you to fine tune your own setup, because usually you won't known where to start.

If you are bothered about colours and stuff, use the Windows 7 Calibration tool as I personally found it worked very well.

Hehe, it's pretty effin bright yes. Takes some getting used to. Especially for me who came from a dark CRT.

so far i like the screen a lot.

coming from a 60hz screen that i've become used to over the years it's been quite a (positive) change to play with a 144hz screen. however as mentioned before, i do notice some screen flickering here and there. the lower you set your brightness the more noticeable it gets.

other than that i haven't really watched any movies, just a few youtube videos and an episode of top gear. i didn't notice any weird colors. they seem to be more vivid than on my old screen. i have green enemy colors in q3 and they're noticeably brighter now. the screen has different presets for gaming, movies etc and if you don't like those you can always create and save your own.

I've been using an old CRT for the last year or so it'll probably be a lot of adjusting no matter which moitor I pick :) Starting to give me too much of an headache, so I need to swap pretty soon!

I also come from a dark and color perfect CRT i hope i will not have too much trouble with this monitor. By the wy if you are using strobing backlight trick then it is 120Hz and not 144 as it is the feedback we were gathering here on ESR.

Flickering -- you must be seeing PWM motion artifacts.

Switching to LightBoost allows a dimmer picture, while eliminating the PWM artifacts. LightBoost still flickers like PWM, but it eliminates the ugly multiple-edge artifact which actually bothers my eye more. (Simple CRT flicker doesn't bother my eyes)

Just got this, tried lightboost trick, and wow it is the smoothest lightboost monitor I've ever tried!

It's actually totally blur free, not a hint of the stuff.

To calibrate it I used the windows 7 calibration tool. Works pretty well

doh, don't know if i reposnded already as i need mod arpoval to post, but i feel the need to repeat this many times here because people do not know that light boost works on AMD cards

ToastyX on Google will get you to his little software hack that can switch LB on/off very quickly for both NVIDIA and AMD cards.

I can confirm it works with both as i have a GTX 770 and HD6970.

It makes the screen dimmer and colours look less vibrant because the gamma gets messed up. But you just need to recalibrate the monitor to fix it. You can't really use the monitor controls, instead tweak the graphics drivers.

I've fixed like 80% of the colour issues from lightboost, it sometimes does still look a little pale/washed out, but maybe a few more tweaks will fix that too. But I can't remember how the monitor normally looked without lb so I'm not sure if these problems are normal anyway.

Anyhow, the motion clarity from lightboost isn't always amazing, but if you want motion clarity then get it. The thing is a lot of people may not really need this level of anti blur.

I received my nVidia card today (decided to go green mainly because of lightboost), but I haven't had the chance to play with it yet. According to the blurbusters blog, these are some *possible* side-effects:

Minor Side Effects: Different color, dimmer screen (slight crimson tint on BENQ, fixable via a new monitor profile, nVidia color calibration), different brightness, some flicker feel (if you are sensitive to CRT flicker).

Ive my XL2411T running with Lightboost, runs rly great and i dont miss my old CRT anymore :P

but what ive noticed:

first time i turned on LB (via nvidia settings -> stereoscopic 3d stuff -> tick stereoscopic 3d), it also enabled VSync.
When i unticked it again, LB is still on but with _disabled_ VSync.

so how is that possible? is it bad or good to let VSYNC on, or is it better to untick the 3d option again - after ive enabled it b4.

iam asking that, cuz VSync usually highers the inputlag, so what about that case ?

Vsync on might give you smoother lightboost motion, but I personally hate the mouse lag it causes. I would definitely uncheck the tickbox to disable VSync after turning on lightboost.

It's not a bug. That's actually a recommended step of the LightBoost HOWTO, to allow LightBoost to remain enabled, while disabling stereoscopic 3D:

TIP: Improving Convenience, Stability & Eliminating “Control+T”:
Once you’ve verified LightBoost works (Step 12), and the registry tweak was already installed (Step 4), you can make LightBoost “stick” by going to nVidia Control Panel and disabling “Enable Stereoscopic 3D” (clear the checkbox in Step 8). If the screen did not flicker when doing this, LightBoost is still enabled even after disabling 3D!
– Games launch in 2D without needing Control+T
– Driver stability is improved in this mode, less freezing occurs.
- VSYNC OFF now works much more reliably, reducing input lag, fps higher than Hz.
(Note: Some games may automatically switch resolutions; make sure it stays at 120 Hz)

What's your opinion on lightboost?

I tried to enable it and it seemed to be enabled as the colors were quite fucked up but it didn't seem to have any effect in game somehow so I turned it off.

I guess it wasn't really fuly working as I should have noticed a difference (besides the fucked up colors) but I followed the guide step by step, so not sure where the problem was.

It's quite normal to have these conflicting reviews of LightBoost.
Common causes are the following:

HUMAN FACTORS
-- Your ability to track fast-moving objects; and your sensitivity to motion blur.
-- Whether or not you are used to CRT gaming. (LightBoost brings the CRT effect to LCD)
-- Some people growing up today, has never played on a CRT before. Such individuals may be less likely to notice quickly.
-- Some people only have a habit of eye-tracking only slower-moving objects.
-- Specific play styles. Strafing sideways & turning motions benefits more than walking forward.
-- Your sensitivity to input lag, flicker, etc. (You benefit more if you don't feel any effects from input lag or flicker)

COMPUTER FACTORS
-- Ability to run fps=Hz. You really need 120fps@120Hz to get maximum LightBoost benefit.
-- Judder/stutter control. Some games/configurations judder so much, that it negetates LightBoost.
-- Framerate limits. Some games cap to 60fps, this needs to be uncapped (e.g. fps_max)
-- Faster motion benefits more. Not as noticeable during slow motion.
-- Specific games. e.g. Team Fortress 2 benefits far more than World of Warcraft.
-- Some games judder more with VSYNC ON, while others judder more with VSYNC OFF. Test opposite setting.
-- High quality mouse (preferably 1000 Hz gaming mouse). Ordinary mice adds too much judder.

GAME PLAY STYLES THAT BENEFIT MORE:
-- Fast 180-degree flick turns in FPS shooting.
-- Shooting while turning, without stopping turning (easier on CRT or LightBoost)
-- Close-up strafing, especially circle strafing
-- Running while looking at the ground (e.g. hunting for tiny objects quickly).
-- Identifying multiple far-away enemies or small targets, while turning fast
-- Playing fast characters such as "Scout" in Team Fortress 2
-- High-speed low passes, such as low helicoptor flybys in Battlefield 3, you aim better.

None of this really apply to me though. I used to play with a CRT until late 2011 and I'm confident I'd be able to see the difference if Lightboost really was on.

I think it wasn't working due to my multiscreens setup and I still haven't bothered finding a way around that issue (that isn't turning off the second screen).

Alternatively, you can also use the ToastyX method instead of the regular method. You can confirm whether LightBoost is on, when the following happens:
- The picture brightness changes
- The monitor OSD setting "Brightness" becomes disabled;
- The monitor OSD setting "LightBoost" becomes enabled instead
- The monitor OSD may say "3D Mode" at the upper-right corner (even when still in 2D)
- Waving your hand in front of a white window, shows a stroboscopic effect.

Nothing wrong with the colours, you just need to recalibrate it - test out some new settings in graphics drivers.

It works perfectly for me and there is much less motion blur than normal 144Hz, by far. Very, very clear. If you need that, then use it. Otherwise there's no need.

Sorry for double post. I noticed that my card 6870 has 2 dvi. When I plug first, aspect radio works fine but max refresh rate is 60Hz. When I plug to second dvi, 144Hz works but aspect ratio doesnt. Whats going on?

I dont know why but Ive got display modes disabled (except 'full' option'). i would rather use gpu scalling, is that true that monitor scalling build in option couses input lag?

I have heard some bad things about monitor scaling actually, but I'm not sure.

Its not the refresh rate issue. Something is terribly wrong with that in ati i guess. Now i have 2 solutions
1) playing with 4:3 aspect ratio which is very important for me - DVI1
2) PLAYING WITH 144hZ/120Hz which is desired :D - DVI2

Because you mentioned the aspect ratio works for 60Hz correctly (in the first DVI port)? I think your ATI card may have a problem only at 144Hz. I'm not sure if ATI supports 144Hz properly.


Btw It's OK that only one DVI port gives 144Hz while the other is only 60Hz, that's because only one of them is a dual link DVI, which is what you need to use the high refresh rates.

I have an Nvidia card and it works perfectly, the aspect ratio is OK for me.

OK I checked that earlier and posted that it is not a refresh rate issue - 120hz couses problem too ;). Damn it.

I just had mein yesterday, i didn't tried lightboost trick right now. But i will give my input about it. The monitor is indeed very bright and dark colors are extremly bad out of the box.

I use it with gamma 5, brightness 100 and picture mode standard with AMA high, contrast 50 and sharpness 5. Basicaly i just changed picture mode and gamma. I don't know what the picture mode FPS1 FPS2 do. Neither do i know what Instant mode does but it was ON by default so i've let it that way.

I use it in 144Hz. Overall i am satisfied. I am still waiting for some brand to create a 240Hz panel. (don't know if this is relevant in any way : http://www.techpowerup.com/135134/LG-Introduc...itors.html)

If anyone have a colorimetric tool to calibrate it and share his settings i am all hearing.

You can tweak the colors in the nVidia Control Panel by clicking Adjust desktop color settings. You can tweak them to look pretty much as you want to, just try it out.

I am using these settings, which look pretty close to my default setup without lightboost:

B = Brightness
C = Contrast
G = Gamma

Red:
B = +32%
C = +40%
G = +0.90

Green:
B = +45%
C = +60%
G = +0.90

Blue:
B = +30%
C = +45%
G = +90%

Digital vibrance = +50%
Hue = +0

On monitor:
NVIDIA 3D Lightboost = Lowest setting
Contrast = 65

I haven't used FPS2 but I think it's a little bit brigther than most others, so you may have to increase the brightness and possibly also the lightboost setting on the monitor. Just be aware that the blur increases ever so slightly when you turn it up. Shouldn't be much difference though.

Must be added input lag by monitor in-built scaler which is rather confusing indeed as it was claimed by benq that their so called "smart scaling" feature is lag free..

I got the XL2411t, enabled lightboost and its crazy. Smooth and ghostless. Colours are a bit iffy, however using a colorimeter i was able to calibrate it to sRGB gamut with good results. Calibrated correctly it is comparable to, if not slightly better than an uncalibrated S-IPS panel i have, however calibrated the S-IPS does produce much better colours, however not that its far off considering its a TN panel.

Could you share your settings?

I calibrated using a colour calibrator (spyder), but the settings in the first post were decent for me to begin with.
