mx518 has prediction/angle snapping/ drift control/etc, G400 doesn't (with the exception of the first few released, u can tell by the packaging). Both are supposedly great mice, I'd take the mx518 over the g400 personally because i like angle snapping but I'm special.

manufacturing quality is better with mx518, that and the angle snapping, but that's pretty much the only difference. You probably should just go and buy a g400.

g400 has matte coating, plug&play 1000hz without manual USB overclocking, no angle snapping. So there's no point buying mx518 tbh

Just buy the G400.

only minus with g400 is that the cord is weak as fuck and will most likely brake after some months, warranty covers it though.

Every "flaw" mx518 had was fixed - 1000hz out of the box, no prediction, and it costs the same as mx518

the mx518 is not manufactured anymore ;)
but the sensor is much better in the g400 as it fixes all of mx518 problems - if you view angle snapping as a problem at least.

the coating of the mice is completely different though. compared to the mx518 the g400 is quite slippery - or grippy in a completely different way. the mx518 has a glossy coating with strong rubber on the sides, it sticks to your hand completely and immediately. the g400 needs a soft grip to stick to your hand. you grip it rather with your thumb and little finger than with your whole hand liek the mx518.

at least the mx518 v2 has exactly the same material used for the sides.
maybe it sticks to your hand much more, because it sucked up all the dirt from years of using it.

I find the G400 way easier to grip than the mx518. Matte coating vs glossy...

well, mx 518 is like the only pro mouse that i have ever had and it is so nice, heard some about g400 and its cable which breaks every now and then, never had that problem with the mx tbh

Well a cable fix is not a hard job especially of you have a good cable like a salmosa cable in my case....

OH and the mx518 though a great overall mouse has an iffy cable.

when i switched to the g400 back when it was released it gave me a significant boost in aim compared to the mx518. Since that mouse broke i now have the "new" g400 and it's equally pleasing.

overall the g400 is a much better mouse, although the software is crap and i prefer to not install it. the cable issues with the poorish build quality are easily fixed by logitech, contact them and they send you a new one for free within a couple of days and it took 2 years for my first g400 to die.

how is the software crap?
i have it installed, set the mouse to only one DPI step and even assigned the 3 extra topbuttons so i can use them for binds.

The G400 is far superior to the MX518. The 518 has now been rendered obselete.

I would rank the G400 as a perfect gaming mouse.

as we now know because of the bst thread, having great tracking is not just about fitting a nice sensor in.

And nowadays other factors are more important than tracking itself, considering that it's rare to find one that absolutely sucks.

Those charts are just stupid regardless. It's a cluster fuck and bias approach of relatively hyped mice without basic understanding of HW itself.

FW quality in conjunction with critical HW competents is a bit more important than the sensor hardware alone. There are a few mice on that list with rather poor implementation.

I think it's more hilarious that there are mice nearly a decade old equipped with the same or similar HW, yet are considered "shit" because of a small algorithm that was added to the tracking code early on.

I can only imagine what was done to archive the higher resolution counts of such modern mice. Likely an unwanted trade off.

Image is everything to him now, and he barely dares to say what he actually thinks. He also goes against the stream as often as he can, just because he believes he can show off more that way. It's a known strategy among asshats: if a conversation touches upon a topic you know a lot about, quickly disagree as much as you can, because that conveys knowledge. Skylit also always drops the "i of course know way more than I can say" line, which usually translates to "I know nothing more than I say, but the perception that I do is important to me".

He doesn't want to give answers anymore, because he can't give them. Not because they don't exist, but because of some self-interest he won't reveal. (Or because it would reveal that he doesn't know as much as he pretends to.) Then talk to us. Which mice are you talking about, and what are their problems? Give us specifics. In all honesty, It's not about selling out or anything of that nature and I could honestly care less about some fictional status on the Internets.

In terms of not saying what I actually think... Well this is correct. I've moved away from leaking out a lot of critical information for self interest to gain a better understanding of why things are the way they are for myself. (I don't think I'm the only one). I am also willing to admit that I removed information off that sensor list I created a while back as there was sensitive material that I was worried about. Sue me (No pun intended).

I am open to state that I don't know as much as the acquaintances I've gotten to know in this rather silly industry. All the information I do present is just merely passed down from the same people who are willing to share. From there things connect, and I comment here and there. So yes, I'm greedy to gain deeper understanding of a mere topic i'm interested in. I'm sorry that I may have come off as elitist or a know it of all. One of my most recent goals was to form a dedicated community where project managers and niche gamers could co exist in relating information to each other. Ultimately forming a gateway for better products, at least in terms of all around acceptance. I don't have anything really going for me other than studying for a degree or two at the moment.

In relation to that. I've actually turned down a few offers dealing with mice/product development. Why? Because I really don't have the experience or knowledge for me to push forward in that field.

It's engineering for gamers, not "for gamers by gamers". Engineers that are/were gamers are a plus though.

"better" is relative. it brings a better sensor, yes.
the coating however is debatable. I got used to it and now I really love it, but it was a tough readjustment coming from a mx518.

also the mouse unfortunately hasnt lost any weight.
the bigget weakness, however, are the suboptimal mouse feet.
they are definitely too big for my taste. what the problem with that is you ask? if your muscle memory got used to the very low friction of the old mx518 style small feet, you simply can not cope.

I ended up modding my old mx518 bottom onto the g400 and add 5 new hyperglide feet and its SO much better.

Theres a few relative changes moving from 518 to G400.

-Coating is obviously different.
-Omron D2FC on side buttons/scroll wheel have been replaced with an alternative HIMAKE submini. Main buttons are now spec'd as 10m. (10 million click rating D2FC)
-Controller has been "upgraded" to a modern OTP USB2.0 controller capable of 1000hz. The controller itself is nothing special and relatively cheap in cost.
-Cable has been swapped for a thinner, but stiff cord.
-Daughter PCB is now soldered into main.
-Sensor has been upgraded to perform at a 3600 count resolution. (Previously 1800, bit of distortion at higher resolution)
-Angle snapping algoritm removed after certain PID, though I don't considered this a flaw/con.
-Still uses cheaper FR2 PCB/Lens. (Not a change, but even Razer has technically superior HW)

this is something that I constantly see being underrated.
mice with 2 big feet have a lot more friction....
especially when they are as big as the g400's.

changing from 5 small feet to 2 big ones was an "improvement" for the worse - 5 small feet allow small aim adjustments much better than 2 big ones with lots of additional friction do.

MX518 had both big and small feet.

- Re-enforced cable/better stress relief. (Not true stress relief)
- Sensor has been upgraded to perform at a 4000 count resolution. (Previously 3600, claim of less distortion at higher CPI).
-Button feedback is slightly worse. Padded plungers. (May promote longevity, I don't know)

Had 3 mx518 and 2 G400.

Like the mx518 better, because the accel kicks in faster.

So after weeks i found a local tiny shop that sells MX518 (apparently).

And thru some research i saw you get a MX518 v1 and MX518 v2. What are the difference between those two?

And how does the G400s compare to the MX518? If anyone has tested the G400s

g400 is much better than mx518, there's more than enough reasons posted in this thread.

The g400s doesn't offer much for someone who already owns a g400, the only thing that's different is cord is a bit reinforced near the outlet, the internals are pretty much the same.

they both have that stupidly deep thumb groove that ruins the mouse.

How does the Steelseries Kana compare to the Logitech G400 / G400S?

kana is a solid mouse sensorwise and shapewise, but the buttons were the shittiest i ever tried on a mouse.
maybe that differs from sample to sample, but the one i tried had a huge gap between the button and the actual microswitch(which is a bad one from TTC itself) underneath it.
